#1 Faster maps? 3-CP? in Map Discussion

To introduce this discussion, put yourself in the frame of reference of the TF2 spectator - or potential spectator. For every match, especially the even ones, we're asking people to give up to an hour of their time to watch TF2 - an hour that they could be watching their favorite TV show or something else. This is one stumbling block on the path to TF2 receiving wider viewership - probably not the only one, but a major one.

I think I'd like to help sponsor some kind of test tournament of 3-CP maps. What I mean by that is maps like Badlands with either the last points or the spires shaved off. Alternatively, someone could come up with an entirely custom 3-CP map that works well.

Main considerations are balanced spawn times and the ability to defend last after wiping at mid - without last points being massive turtlefests that last terribly long. I think the maps should also still focus on the necessity of mobility to promote the classes you guys like to play most - make sure there's ample room for scouts to flank without making them too powerful, for instance.

As a caster, I think my viewers will be much more willing to come watch TF2 matches when they don't last as long as an hour. If the MAXIMUM map time were 30 minutes, and the score limit something like 3 or 4, that could make for matches that are shorter but still just as "close" and exciting as the hour-long ESEA standards.

I would like to gather feedback about this idea now, so I can have a solid idea to put forth to eXtv and a group like TF2maps. It'd be great to do a map competition similar to STAR's KOTH contest.

The main question is: what are your thoughts on how it'd be to actually PLAY a competitive 3-CP map with a 30-minute max time and a 3-point max score?

#1 RIP Vile Rat in Off Topic

http://themittani.com/news/rip-vile-rat

Sean "Vile Rat" Smith was one of the most influential players of EVE Online who's ever been. He used his experience in doing IT for US diplomacy to craft entire diplomatic systems for Goonswarm alliance and was, by all accounts, an amazing guy. He was among those killed at the American embassy in Libya over something that was completely, utterly unrelated to him.

I used to play EVE and I still love reading about the politics and the wars. I knew the name Vile Rat, even though I'd never met him. Rest in peace, man.

#99 Ask Sal a question in Q/A Help

They do. That's who I'm talking about. I don't see a lot happening on their end.

I've only been copied on one email. I've seen promises to get contact information and other stuff, but none of those promises have produced anything yet. It's understandable that these guys may be busy, but if they are, they need to circle other folks into the discussions, provide a roadmap for getting TF2 to DH, and make sure the work actually gets done. If it's happening at all, I simply don't see it.

EDIT: I posted this from work, where I couldn't see skype. Some contact details have been shared today, and I just found out about it.

The status on Dreamhack at the moment is "I don't know if anything's actually being done." The people I'm talking to right now are either a) not copying me on their communications to DH and sponsors or b) not having those communications. Certain parties also won't share any of their contact information for Dreamhack officials and employees.

If you want to help, do you have any contacts among the DH staff?

#93 Yup, i46 documentary. That's what the eXtv staff were attending for.

#90 Nope.

#91 It's chugging along, we have a few work-in-process sequences. I'm happy with the way it's shaping up so far, but there's a long way to go.

fyi - doesn't look like that steam hub currently generates a lot of traffic for the vids. I could be wrong, but youtube analytics for my "most popular" vid on the steam hub only showed 3 referrals. So, false alarm on that previous marketing post I guess?

edit: unless you get like 100 thumbs-up in a day, or whatever is enough to push it from the "videos" section to the top of the main page.

#20 What's going to happen to the CommFT Top 10? in TF2 General Discussion

We have a "how-to" on our eXtv forum. If you're a member of eXtv, you should have access. If you're interested, send Jeff an email at extine@extelevision.com.

Simple steps to verify the person you're talking to is actually a Razer rep. That is, if anyone in TF2 rates the attention of Razer reps. v0v

I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure eXtv is always looking for more MoG / GoM producers and editors. It'd be nice to get more of those clips out the door and on youtube, especially if we can't get a top 10 for that month.

#7 fucking lockdown in Off Topic

I used to play minecraft. It's generally a pretty boring game most of the time, so when I have access to better stuff like TF2 or Starcraft, I play those. Obviously, I can't do those at work. And Dwarf Fortress takes up too much CPU for this poor lil' Thinkpad. After about 10 years of running a fort, shit really slows down.

As for actual work: get out. Accounting isn't real work.

I can't make Minecraft work on my laptop in the office right now. My life is over.

It's due to the OpenGL drivers / something in the bin folder not working correctly. When I get home I can try using minecraft.exe to re-download the whole bin and make it work, but it won't connect through the office firewall and we're on heavy user access control windows vista. yaaaaay.
