As the winter continued, the landscape surrounding the hedgehogs turned from green to brown to white as vegetation withered and was smothered by ice and frost. The hedgehogs, though unwilling to squander the last of their strength, were even more unwilling to freeze in the unrelenting blizzard. So they dug. After several hours of desperation, the hedgehogs broke through snow, pack ice, and ash into the dirt of a more familiar world that had since been obliterated through human excess. With their spirits renewed, the hedgehogs began to expand their subterranean home, consuming the few remaining plant roots that were not locked away in ice.
Suddenly, one of the hedgehogs broke through a thin layer of rotted wood into a large rectangular cavity occupied solely by the blinking of an LED and the hum of a generator. As its peers came over to investigate, the lone hedgehog approached the unknown light and pushed on it, activating the mysterious machine the button was a part of. The light of a monitor penetrated the infinite blackness of the room. Text on the monitor read "Death of Sun Imminent" in one window, and "Lost connection to Steam, will rejoin chat automatically when connection regained." But this all meant nothing to the hedgehogs. Upon further inspection of the strange metallic box connected to the monitor, they found that its sides were warm and the fans blew warm air. Exhausted but relieved, the hedgehogs crowded around the box and quickly fell asleep.
Snow continued to fall outside.
