#92 Why do so many people bash 9v9? in TF2 General Discussion
eXtine-58 frag votes? whatevs.

Just got back from work, here's some diffusion.

Marissa asked why HL gets bashed. I think that some of the bashers are 6s players that are scared of HL overtaking it. I'm not generalizing 6s players, just the minority that bashes on HL without GOOD reasons. There are a lot of logical thoughts being discussed in this thread, which to me isn't "bashing".

I think there is a subliminal thought process in some of the HL haters that are scared of the fact that HL is way more relate-able to pubbers, aka the mass majority of TF2 players. What if Valve came in and hosted a TF2-I with just Highlander? <--- that's not gonna happen, but that's the fear of the haters.

Just my opinion, don't really care about the -fragss, still gonna sleep well tonight.

p.s. regarding my HL is more team-oriented comment, I didn't mean it takes more team work per se, just that there is less room for individuals to make huge impacts.

Isn't highlander already larger in terms of players? You can pretty safely say it's already overtaken it so fearing any future "overtaking" is kinda ridiculous.

At worst HL bashing is elitism. Most bashing I see is disliking the gameplay (playing with the "annoying" classes more often) or thinking of it as diminished competition (lower skill ceilings in general, etc), which honestly I think is acceptable since different game modes and styles are for different people.

I don't get why you expect the price to be the same as the ad revenue he gets from a single person, but it'd be cents. Also, the server overhead is obviously very low per person, but you're paying to support enigma's time spent coding/maintaining the site. That's the main cost, which obviously doesn't have a set price on it.

It's to support the site/enigma. It's impossible to make it "worth" it because you're mainly paying for a subjective thing (supporting the site). There could be more features, and I agree with that, but expecting the $5 to be objectively worth it is pretty stupid.

Specifically what bashing are you talking about?

At the very least 9's diminishes the contribution of a single player (1/9th compared to 1/6th). Of course it reality it's skewed towards the better classes like demo, but there's less individual skill coming into play. A good "high level" competitive format should be the right balance between # of players/skill distribution and fun.

I have no problems with people enjoying HL/playing it for fun, but the 6's community doesn't see it as a very competitive format (like the popular opinion on dota2 > lol in this forum).

KanecoYeah, sorry but no. I have a SMF forum with 5k users and the forum has faster loading times than tf.tv. And there are plenty other examples. It just depends on the optimization or maintenance the site has.

I don't get how adding something can improve performance, and I doubt that adding an extra query will be non-existent. A small performance hit could be .05 seconds, could be .2 seconds who knows (I haven't myself made a benchmark for this scale a website, but obviously it's going to add a few fractions of a second at the very least). There would still be a performance hit. Also, I'm pretty sure this is run on a VPS. Depending on the capabilities and limits of enigma's provider (I think it's linode, and he's using cloudflare to help distribute), it could be worse than it should be.

I'm not saying its the way to go, and I know that the aim here is for a more simplistic approach, but you can still achieve that with a few more features or perks. Anywa those icons don't clutter anymore than the current post starts, so... And there are great smf or phpbb forums, their functionality is great even if its still a bit cluttered, but you can still achieve a minimalistic look as well with those "free board like invision" which by the way is paid and costs 175$ minimum a license.

Also, whatever on the invision part. I used a "free" invisionboard provider (though it is a proprietary board anyways dunno how much source is given out) but either way most of those boards have very similar layouts and features that aren't needed. The question is could you easily achieve this exact look using those forum providers, and would throwing out all the work already put in be worth it. I mean I like teamliquid's style and this site's/gotfrag style where there's at most 1 icon next to the person, then legacy stars (which aren't necessary but whatever). Aesthetics are pretty important for a site like this, and people don't want enigma to fix what isn't broken.

KanecoI think the way to go here would be to have it work automated with ESEA / ETF2L API for prem / invite players, and I don't see why a small icon should matter anything, sure name color is simpler, but since its for + subscriptions now, you could have just a small icon or text saying the player is a invite/prem player

ESEA doesn't have an API. The best you can do is make a webcrawler (which probably isn't that hard, but it's still work to be done). Dunno about ETF2L but I doubt they have one also.

While I agree with the main goal being supporting tf.tv, I think there are plenty ways you can make it worth $5.

Why not list them? Exclude anything that involves icons/headers in threads though (even the i49 donator header kinda annoyed me visually). I'm sure enigma's open to good ideas that don't conflict with some of the design goals of the forum.

Kaneco

You've reminded me why free boards like invision and phpbb are awful. Overly large post headers, stupid icons spam, avatars, signatures, etc.

This site is suppose to be pretty bare bones and based off the gotfrag layout/system. Because of how basic it was meant to be, starting from scratch was arguably easier than having to cut out all the excess features, reskin the boards to their specs, etc. It also comes with the benefit of being pretty optimized because there's no vestigial database entries and what not from the bloated free forums.

And yes, tftv could probably handle the feature at a small to medium performance cost. However I doubt enigma wants to trash on the current speed of the forums (it's pretty fast if you haven't noticed). If anything, think of it as a test feature that could potentially become a normal feature, though I doubt anytime soon (once enigma starts implementing an archiving system and gets a bigger server then maybe).

Also, tftv+ is mainly just to support the site, as there's really no way to make $5 "worth" it on an online forum. But if the site continues to expand maybe it'll be possible to add more features to the mix and make it a bit more worth it.

PS. I do think gold names would be better than blue names for tftv+, just so legacy invite keeps something. Maybe add a css hack for outlining text with gold and invite color, but it looks kinda ugly (hope browsers eventually support true outlining text).

#2 reddit mge hacker again in TF2 General Discussion

Didn't the other thread establish that the reddit MGE owners didn't really browse this site?

http://teamfortress.tv/forum/thread/12201-sniper-hacking-in-reddit-mge/2#post-36

Not much is going to happen reporting it here (maybe a ban on the iT servers, but I'm betting those hackers generally don't target them since no lolclassing).

#17 I get too angry/depressed when we get rolled in Off Topic

Depends on what you get mad at. Some people get mad at themselves, some get mad at their teammates, some get mad at the server, etc. It's best to just figure out why you're getting rolled and think of the future instead of getting too focused on the current game. Blaming teammates and what not makes it harder for the team to fix things in the future, and if you blame yourself work on DM or something.

DroidsterWhyyyyyyyy? We are PC gamers, we want mouse+keyboard, all a controller does is make your aim worse.

Pretty sure you can still plug in a keyboard or mouse into the steam box. Don't see why they would stop you from doing it at least.

Also, some games do feel better on controller than keyboard IMO. Nothing wrong with having a controller for those games. Though it's missing buttons on the right side for common console types.

We'll have to see how people actually like the feel/usability of the controller (who gives a shit about controller looks anyways). I'm assuming valve was competent enough to make sure the testers actually enjoyed the feel of the controller for the games they tested.

There aren't many loose ends though. The only people left in the game are Walt's family, Jesse, Brock, Lydia, and the neo-nazis. Killing the neo-nazis cleans up just about everything (money back, Jesse and Brock saved), plus Lydia with ricin cleans up things nicely. That's not to say the money might go to waste, but Saul is gone. I think Walt can convinced the cleaner to take Jesse again despite his policy too, letting Jesse get on with his life potentially. Then Walt can die (and probably confess everything to the DEA before dying to get his "legacy") and hope that Jesse figure out how to send the money properly to Brock, Mike's granddaughter, and Walt's family.

that by insinuating he had no impact whatsoever on the formation of grey matter eliott effectively robbed him of the last piece of his legacy he had left. His family hates him, he can't give his money to his children, and now even the memory of his legitimate accomplishment has been wiped from history. If he dies that moment his life meant nothing. It's been a motif throughout the series that this is what Walt is scared of most and would do anything to prevent. Makes me think that Eliott just pushed him over the edge and caused him to snap, and I'm speculating that he's now thinking that if he didn't get screwed by Elliott he would've had everything he wanted.

probably wishful thinking on my part though i just really dont want to see walt go scarface it's out of character and doesnt make any sense in the context of recent events

I rewatched the news scene about 5 times.

He gets a bit angry when he hears about them denying everything, but he doesn't start "breaking" until he hears about the blue meth being out there AND in Europe. He starts to open his mouth then instead of just his mad/contempt face. He fully breaks when she says Walt is gone. I don't think he'll go after Eliot/Gretchen because she made him realize the truth of who he is now (even though they lied about his legacy, he can probably understand why publically. On the other hand, the Nazi's not following the agreement to kill Jesse gives him the "right" to go kill them).

I think him seeing Elliot and Gretchen made him realize that he isn't a good guy anymore. He's always thought that he was doing what was morally right, but after Junior hating him and Gretchen saying that Walter White was gone made him realize that his legacy is just about the only thing left. This isn't about redemption anymore (except maybe to Jesse, but Jesse's already been fucked 100x over by Walt at this point), but revenge for a) keeping Jesse alive to cook blue meth and b) killing Hank. c) later when Todd tries to kill Skyler. Walt is going to die, but he wants to get everything straightened out and at least get his side of the story out. He knows he's truly a bad guy at this point. So he's going to go out like a bad guy and in a blaze of glory. Something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGEzasVvNCg

Also, Jesse has to live. If Walt survives the shootout/Todd then I'd expect him to give Jesse the option to kill him and probably the option to disappear (he can only give money to Jesse/Vacumn cleaner guy at this point).

Nothing in the video is played in reverse, if that's what you're saying.

It took a guy telling me that it didn't even play in reverse.

I might be stupid...

Jumping backwards lets you over accelerate in some older source games (maybe newer too).
