#49 intrusive/fucked up thoughts in Off Topic
svfreyok I wasn't planning on posting in this thread again but I feel strangely compelled to defend my blind driving

1) I never do the driving thing if there's a car within 100 feet in front of me in my lane. "Moderate" was probably not the right descriptor there and "light" is the correct one. What I get for posting as I'm falling asleep I guess

2) I am a really *really* good driver. 100% pristine record and I live up in the northeast so year s of driving in snow has given me extremely good awareness and control. Theres no way I would even dream of driving with my eyes closed for more than a blink if I didn't have full confidence in myself to not drift over short periods of time.

Is this the logic of a drunk driver?

Foxthis is the entire basis of my fear of heights
i always get this feeling of jumping over things

I get a similar feeling except instead of jumping I imagine any way I could fall.

Phobias are probably a good example of intrusive thoughts with a well defined trigger.

While sitting in school, I've probably thought of a hundred different ways to kill someone and get away with it/if there was a shooter on campus, how I would take him down because guys playing video games makes me able to disarm him right

That's just daydreaming. Wouldn't call it that intrusive.

#30 Interesting New idea for a cell phone in Off Topic
d0m3rno not at all you just seem to want to see this idea burn in a fire when its a interesting topic of what a phone could be like you just completely deny any creative credit to the designer id like to see you come up with something nearly as creative or "innovative" this guy never wanted any money just people to share his idea and all you do is deny and recognition where its needed

Holy run-on sentence. I think phones that had interchangeable parts like a computer motherboard could be great, which is a step down from what he's trying to do. That's fine. It's just a bit absurd to announce lego phones without researching or addressing design issues for something like that.

Anyways, here's my innovative idea: pocket force fields. It creates a field around you that prevents overly fast acceleration so that you don't get punctured or killed (bullets knives etc). Carry it around in your pocket and it'll trace your skin (which has conductive layers thanks to skin sweat and what not), create a powerful electromagnetic field, and repel things that get to close. Carry it in your pocket so no suits or anything.

You see, my idea is absurd because you know the limits of physics and what not. You would call me stupid and crazy, as it doesn't already exist. Engineers laugh at his idea because we can see why it falls through. The idea of more interchangeable hardware to me isn't a new revolution, it's just the atmosphere of mobile electronics and rigid hardware designing deals between companies to produce certain brands of phones makes it really hard to imagine something like that happening anytime soon.

EDIT: Guy above me explains the gist of why I dislike it.

d0m3rwhy are you so upset about this just let it go

Why are you so defensive? I was countering his point that it being "innovative thinking" isn't something special, it's just the visuals that make people interested. And I generally think it's negative to have these things spread because it can lead to false expectations of people (ie CSI). This leads to a waste of time if people buy into it.

BTW, you honestly took the responses to this thread way to personally. Most people were addressing the guy in the video, but it honestly seems like you feel like you're being attacked in this thread. You posted something a lot of engineers (which there are quite a few on this forum) didn't like, and have negative feedback about the video. Don't take it personally.

#25 Interesting New idea for a cell phone in Off Topic
frknif this was a campaign on indiegogo I'd think he was crazy, but he isn't asking for money, just for people to help share his idea.

it is innovative thinking and just because an implementation like in the video won't ever happen, doesn't mean it is useless and a complete waste of time

Not really, the reason why it got so viral is because it has visuals. You can do "innovative thinking" all you want, but unless you can do animations and have a nice presentation you won't get the kind of response he got. If this was a blog post, it wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

So kids, make sure you learn how to present things. This is a great example of how to sell something to the general public.

#23 Interesting New idea for a cell phone in Off Topic
marioThere's this interesting thing that happens with ideas. Let's say billy has an idea. He posts about it on teamfortress.tv. The first few posts go along the lines of "Hey, that's cool!" and "I want one!" But it doesn't last forever. Soon someone realizes the idea isn't perfect, there's a flaw in the design(!). Then another post like that comes along. Then another. And another. Soon every single post either echos the mistakes already pointed out or directly insults the poster.

So billy's saying "Hey wait a minute. What happened to my idea?" Sorry billy, your idea wasn't perfect. And because it wasn't perfect we've decided the whole idea is stupid. Why would you even think of something like that? Are you stupid?

I guess it doesn't really matter, just something I have found to be fairly universal.

Personally, I expect people to have a plan, not an idea. I also expect them to have done research on the topic. The fact he doesn't address any possible design flaws or how he'll tackle them makes me consider it stupid.

The video is just a soundbite to attract people. I sincerely doubt he has any plan to make it really happen, though his page was down so I haven't bothered checking it completely.

#7 Final Fantasy 14 - svr: Behemoth in Other Games

GW2 had no endgame. I did 100% map just to complete everything though.

Also, is it true there's a 2.5 sec global cooldown or something?

#7 Interesting New idea for a cell phone in Off Topic

This is what happens when art majors that don't know computers or business come up with ideas.

I mean honestly, how exactly can the thing work without dedicated slots? Even if a computer has interchangeable parts, it's still on a pretty damn fixed grid. Only USB ports offer similar modularity, but they're just I/O devices. I don't think anyone tries putting memory into their CPU slots, I really doubt any computer is built that way. There's also no real way to make a proper bus path or anything. I don't even know.

And I really doubt the mobile industry will want to work together on a standard for this thing. That would take forever on its own, and I'm pretty sure phone providers love to keep selling new phones every year instead of having stuff upgrade (and it's cheaper to make anyways).

#12 paper tower in Off Topic

You guys should probably read his posts. The tower can only be paper and tape, and it has to be free standing (so none of my tape to something else stuff).

Cones/cylinders are the way to go. I hope this is done indoors so that you don't have to deal with trying to stand it in the wind.

Also, I still think 8-9 feet is ridiculous for an assignment. Here's a 5-6 feet one I found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30pGTeFBBYI

I'd honestly try building three 1-3 feet towers, then having a final piece extend even higher than the rest. Having 3 points to stand up the tower is the most important part, then making something go up without bending/falling over is the final part.

#13 steam sharing in Off Topic
KanecoNah, I wasn't suggesting that. hell I haven't pirated a game since I moved to steam 3-4 years ago. I was thinking something more in the lines of what some MMOs or starcraft have that let you play with a friend that hasn't bought the game

Only a developer can do that, not sure how you think Steam could actually do that for every game.
