Well is the 8700K currently overclocked?

What SSD? Is it M.2?

Why that specific PSU?
Why that specific mobo? How do you plan on overclocking with an H370 mobo?

In my current rig I have it clocked to 4.9ghz, although using Noctua NH-D15.

Current SSD is not an M.2 but I'm planning on getting one.

Doesnt have to be that specific psu but its small, not sure if 600w is enough however.

Oh I just noticed you can't overclock with H370, glad I posted here. I'm open for suggestions on mobo's.

Thanks!

Are you set on the case?

With an M.2 SSD, no HDD and no ODD a lot of size can be saved that can instead be used for the cooler. I don't like Aios and custom loops are a pain at that size so enough space to get a decently sized air cooler instead of a SFF one would go a long way.

Would roughly estimate 400-450W, depending on the OC. The case fits SFX and SFX-L.

Do you need Wi-Fi or anything special?

Case can absolutely be changed, but portability is number 1 for me and ofc being able to fit some decent things into it.

The cases I have been looking at is DAN A4 and ghost s1 mini

I dont need wifi or anything special other than that. I will always have a cable plugged into it. My plan is to get a 500gb m.2 and have 500gb m.2 and a regular 500gb ssd in the case. Then get some kind of usb to sata for my last regular HDD that I barely use but have some stuff on.

So a case that can fit 1x 2.5" and 1x 3.5" would actually be more useful.
I'll post some options later.

I forgot to ask, how small do you want to go?
Sub 10L is obviously fairly cramped. 10-15L is still very small but would allow for the SSD/HDD slots, normal ATX PSU and >140mm cooler. E.g. Raijintek Metis or Silverstone SG08.

The most reasonably priced mini-ITX mobo with good VRMs would probably be the MSI MPG Z390I Gaming Edge AC (no idea how they came up with that name).

I'd like to go as small as possible since I ideally would like to put the pc in a backpack or carryon bag and bring to lan.

The Raijintek Metis or Silverstone SG08 feels a bit too big to be honest. Haha great mobo name

I know the Metis looks like a massive cube and the SG08 looks quite blocky as well but they are not that large.

Ghost S1 Mini 322x140x188mm
Metis 190x254x277mm
SG08 222x190x351mm

Not sure which one would better fit into a backpack, but they are all well below the size limits for carryon luggage, especially going by "total linear measurement" (width+height+depth) that some airlines use the Metis is almost the same size.

I just want you to be aware of the options because <10L all space for coolers and HDDs is basically gone, an overclock isn't really going to happen and your choice of PSUs will be limited (and expensive).

I can look for some more options but I think you'll have to live with these limitations if you want to go that small.

Makes sense, I guess I can go a little bit bigger. I'm really contemplating wether I wanna go bigger or drop the idea of overclock. Between the SG08 and Metis I'm leaning towards the Metis

Although it looks like my graphics card wont fit in the Metis looking at their specs

Yes, 305mm is a lot. Just an example for the general idea of cube-ish cases.

There are different possible tradeoffs, e.g. going larger but keeping all the features (Node 304), not as large but SFX PSU (PC-Q50), sacrificing max cooler height and slight size increase (Ophion), integrated PSU and smaller cooler but same size (SG07), low cooler height and SFX PSU but even smaller (Raven Z RVZ01), same size and cooler compatibility but limited to SFX or non-modular ATX PSUs (Shark Zone C10, QB One) and everything in between.
The last two and the SG08 are about as small as it gets (14-15L) for decent cooler size + 3.5" slot + ATX PSU + >300mm GPU.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll have a look and see what I want to do, travelling portability is my main concern but I also don't wanna drop too much performance. If I dared I would delid :D

After alot of thinking I'd rather drop overclocking than portability. My final question is wether the Cryorig C7 and Noctua NH-L9i are good enough to cool the i7-8700k. I guess the turbo up to 4.7ghz makes it run hot but I dont know how to know for sure. What do you think? Also sorry for spamming the thread

Edit: checked tdp ratings, I guess I'll have to semi big either way even without overclocking

It's fine, probably wouldn't have seen just an edit.

Not so much about TDP ratings rather than the 8700K easily drawing >100W at stock, but yeah. SFF cases generally don't have the best airflow so a decent low profile cooler usually just about makes stock settings work. Undervolted it's completely fine but any sort of overclock will require a heatsink with significant volume. There really is no substitute for the big block of fins.

hi there
im planning to buy a pc and a 144hz monitor in like september/august ish so idk if thats too far ahead to plan so sorry if it is
my budget is around 600~ish(not including monitor) and honestly i just play csgo so would like to have 144+fps constant on that for like medium settings? besides those games probably just dota and league so 144+ for those as well on medium as well

idk too much about the monitors either but my price range for it would be 200 and under if you could recommend some that'd be great

also an england boy :)

thanks!

Yeah it's still a bit too early.
Anything you could reuse though? With a budget of 600 saving 100 or so by reusing HDD, case, whatever is very noticeable.

Thinking of getting this build, ideally want something for no more than 1.5k euros
https://ie.pcpartpicker.com/list/rZMQr6
Already have Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler from my last build but I have no idea if it's compatible.

What's the goal other than spending 1,500€?

The 212 Evo will fit but it's not that great and won't really get you anywhere if you want to overclock the 9700K.

I want to future proof it and able to stream with 0 impact on game performance.
I was thinking that, but I wasn't sure what to do about the cooler tbh.

"future proofing" doesn't exist and doesn't work.
Even if it did buying a CPU from last year in May when the traditional release dates for new high end Desktop CPUs are in August to October is not smart.

silvesable to stream with 0 impact on game performance.

Use a separate PC for encoding otherwise there will always be some impact on game performance.

I have a few questions.

1. I have a *really bad* dust allergy, how can I setup my PC to help as much as possible with that.

2. I have this old gaming pc with a core 2 extreme QX6850 (socket: LGA775), it used to be liquid cooled, but my loop is broken. I need a CPU cooler to get it running again, what should I get. I'm planning to use it for netflix, and it's unlikely but maybe stream encoding.

1. Not sure how a PC would help. At best it won't create any more dust so it won't make it worse, but it'll definitely not help.
Dust filters a pretty standard these days so it won't push as much dust around the room as without them but even if you clean them fairly often I don't think that's the way to deal with your dust allergy.

Do you know what exactly you're allergic to? Dust mites, cockroaches, mold, pollen, animal hair/fur, something weird or all of them?

2. Any slightly older cooler will be fine. Most Thermalright should still be compatible (e.g. Macho or True Spirit 120/140), the classics like some Enermax ETS-T40 variation and so on. Not sure how much you're willing to spend and how much you need to spend, did you use the liquid cooling to achieve some crazy power hungry overclock?
Then you'd want something bigger. NH-D14, Silver Arrow and PH-TC14PE are all compatible.

So my skin gets worse when I turn on my PC. The side which is closer to the PC will get more irritated. It just itches and I get rash above my eyes, ears and hairline. All I know is my PC circulating air around the room makes it worse.

SetsulDo you know what exactly you're allergic to? Dust mites, cockroaches, mold, pollen, animal hair/fur, something weird or all of them?

I'm not certain.

I have had an allergy test and it said that I'm allergic to dust mites, pollen, dogs+cats. I don't believe its pollen (not the main thing), and its not animal hair (I only have fish for obvious reasons), not cockroaches (there are none).

It could be mold (I live in a damp climate, and my house has a green roof above the workshop that leaks, gets repaired, leaks etc. I've put up a temporary roof up but its not perfect. I also have underfloor heating using water pipes. Water features, cedar roof. I've had many leaks before. There's lot of things that is potentially an issue). I haven't seen mold spores or anything obvious. I don't know if I'm allergic to mold (+there are many types etc).

I get triggered if I don't change my pillowcase every day, make my bed. foam earphones are awful.
I haven't had this issue my whole life, more like the last 4 years.

If I had to guess: Dust > mold > foam/latex.
steroid cream helps a lot, but not something I want to be reliant on.

I would move, but its very difficult and will cost me 100k so I would rather exhaust all other options first.

I have moved my computer into its own room. It sits on the floor as far away from me as possible, which is better than on my desk but maybe a box or something would be better.
I have a metal desk, leather chair, hard mousepad, and my electronics. I have wood floors, no wallpaper, no air vents. There is a box of tissues :> which I might get rid of and cream for my skin, nothing else in the room. It's on the lower floor of my house which seems worse.

Housekeeper cleans my room. I've told her to change products. I clean my PC often with a leafblower.

My pc has stock dust filters on intake (fractal design r5), 2 intake fans with the door closed. I've removed the exhaust fan. It has a noctua nh-d14 with 2 fans. its hard to clean the heatsink because it's so large. I've changed from static overclock to dynamic to reduce fan speeds on idle.

it was overclocked, 4.1ghz at 1.55v, still ran fairly hot on liquid. it's been higher like 4.4ghz but not stable. I had a crappy aio liquid cooler before and it would hit deep 90s/thermal shutdown at my goal of 4ghz lmao.

As far as my goals now, I'll be happy if its stable at stock clock (3ghz). I don't care much about the performance of this PC anymore as long as she runs.

I was considering a more expensive cooler that can be used in the future (eg:NH-D15 with adapter), but probably not worth it. I could use the NH-D14 from my main pc and get a new cooler for that which is better with dust if such a thing makes any difference.

I think my best option is a cheap cooler that is sufficient.

Hello ! I have two fairly simple questions regarding the i5-9600k :
- Is the 4.6 GHz "Turbo Boost 3.0" an automatic raise in clockrate, meaning it will go up gradually by itself if the load requires it to do so ? Or is it just some sort of overclock that you can manage directly from the OS (as opposed to the bios menu) ? I'm assuming each core's clockrate is handled independently by this process ?
- Will a Be Quiet Pure Rock be able to keep it at a safe temperature both on stock clockrate (3.7 GHz) for all 6 and on 4.6 GHz for all 6 ?
Thanks in advance

Medically this is complicated, it could be mold triggering the rest (did anything change 4 years ago?), could be mostly the dust mites. Ideally freezing the bedding etc. would probably make a noticeable if that's the problem, but I think you don't have the climate for it and it's not the right season anyway.

A cheap air purifier with an HEPA filter might be worth trying.

In terms of the PC keeping it in a different room would probably be best if it's possible. Passive cooling is fairly limited and even low rpm isn't ideal.
If you can't do that a larger cooler and lower rpm would probably be better than cheaping out.
FYI the mounting system didn't change so if you don't want to wait for the free mounting kit you can buy an NH-U14S or whatever and use it with the NH-D14's mounting kit for the old pc and use the new mounting kit for the new pc, assuming it's LGA115x.

But I have to stress that the most cost effective solution are simply long cables and keeping the pc out of the room altogether. Then any cheap cooler will do. Expensive coolers or even watercooling would allow for lower rpm but simply having two pcs running instead of one will make things worse no matter what. An external radiator would allow the airflow to be moved away from your face but is way more expensive than longer cables.

1. Automatic, limited by TDP. There's power limit that it will exceed to reach those clockrates and the mobo settings control for how long and by how much the CPU is allowed to do that. On some mobos both of those are set to infinite because that obviously makes the mobos look better in benchmarks (who the fuck still benchmarks mobos?) but it obviously drives up the power consumption.
Semi-independent, load per core but TDP is shared.
2. Yes and no. It will be able to but 4.6 is the single core turbo, with 2 cores active it's limited to 4.5, 3-4 active 4.4 and 5-6 to 4.3 GHz. If you want all cores to run at 4.6 you'll have to overclock it but then you shouldn't limit yourself to 4.6 so the question is wrong. You shouldn't even be buying an i5-9600K if you're not going to overclock it and get an i5-9600 instead.
