I'd like to build a computer for my brother for christmas, I was going to just go with this build unless you know of anything that would improve it. I'd like to keep the budget at $800 w/o peripherals.

I'm assuming you're going to overclock.

Thanks, that makes it much easier than having to guess.
For trash settings I'd drop the GPU and get a better CPU. You can still get a GPU later if you want to, but TF2 and CS:GO on the lowest clocked Pentium won't be that great.
Prices will change until mid December obviously, but something along the lines of this should be better.

That's exactly what happened. I realized the part list was really bad.
The idea wasn't that bad.
Not quite sure if I remember the partlist right, but I think it hinged on a 90$ 750 Ti, right? Without that it just doesn't work anymore.
Anyway I forgot to ask earlier if you've already got an HDD/SSD. I assumed you're reusing an old one, but I just want to make sure.

I made this instead, and I do have an HDD. I removed the GPU, because the processor was really bad, and I don't know if that was a good idea. I took the i3-6100 as my new processor, and I changed the PSU to a 400W one instead of 450, because my parts are not very power-hungry.

Also, do you think it's better to get 2 20' used monitors, or the one in the setup I'm about to build? I kinda like dual-monitor setups but I'm not sure if they would be better in this occasion. Bte, for both monitors it was $75.

How about not buying a $75 RUBBER DOME keyboard and putting that money into a 144hz? Also no GPU?

Hey guys.
I'm showing my friend the wonders of pcpartpicker since he was going to buy a prebuilt. He's building a computer for his mother, who's trying to use virtual reality to help patients that have PTSD.
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/flatline/saved/#view=W38rHx
This was a preliminary build based off the ACER Predator AG3 he showed me in a Costco magazine. I kind of just threw stuff together, so if anyone has any feedback that would be great.

Hey setsul,
I just changed (AGAIN) my setup, and as I already mentioned, I already have an HDD.
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/r8rmm8
Also, would you reccomend 3 used monitors, all 1920x1080 (unknown size), or the one already in my part list? And for a headset, would you reccomend the Cloud Stinger or TT eSports Cronos AD headset? According to some YT reviews, the Cronos AD has a pretty good mic, noise cancellation is active as well, but IDK and I imagine you have some experience with gaming. I'm also used to a laptop keyboard and I like rather silent ones, so I picked the CM Octane keyboard + 3500dpi mouse, again, I would appreciate any tips.
As for my build, what could I change? I heard even without a GPU you can still kinda play TF2, and I migt upgrade in the future anyways, as this is a budget build I plan to improve. I went for under $600CAD, and I succeded.

I think you got the wrong PSU.
The G2 (and P2/T2) are the those that have been praised by every reviewer.
The Nex is ancient and mediocre, but for some reason still sold and at the same price.

If he wanted a prebuilt are you sure he's going to overclock?
Also I don't think you need an i7.
A 1060 is the official bare minimum for VR and I think you know how well games run on the minimum recommended hardware, so I'd put more money into the GPU and less towards the CPU/overclocking.
A better PSU and case would also be worthwhile.
Which GPU exactly depends on if you're going to drop the i7, overclocking or both.
#1904
Depends on the price. If the used monitors are cheaper it'S a no brainer. You're not exactly looking for quality on this budget, just a cheap monitor that works.
I do not recommend headsets. Headphones + mic are better 99% of the time.
Mechanical keyboard switches don't make a sound unless they are supposed to (e.g. Cherry MX Blue), you get clicking when you bottom out which happens for example on reds. Others have "tactile feedback" (browns etc.) which means you feel a "click" once the key counts as pressed so you don't have to bottom out. -> much quieter
Also rubber dome feels terrible compared to mechanical. I suggest you try one.
DPI are pretty much meaningless.
Do some research on peripherals, there's no need for me to copy paste it all here. E.g. for mechanical keyboards take a look at the /r/mechanicalkeyboards wiki.
I generally recommend not getting a mobo with only 2 RAM slots. It makes upgrading more expensive since you can't keep your old RAM (unless you were running single channel before) and it means they're really scraping the bottom of the barrels and are cutting corners wherever they can. E.g. onboards sound will also be worse, fewer USB ports etc.
Same for PSUs. If it can't make 80+ Bronze, a decade old standard, then it's either an ancient design and shouldn't even be sold anymore or they've used the cheapest components they could find and in that case it should never be sold in the first place.
Basically figure out the peripherals first so I know how much is left for the rest.

Just out of curiosity, I'm starting to put together my build on pcpartpicker, but I'm not sure what a good price for a CPU cooler would be. In either CAN or USD, what's a good price to look for?
(In terms of CPU, looking at Core i5-6500 or 6600)

1. Price != performance.
2. The stock cooler is fine.

If you had to choose between these two, and even make some changes but keep it at about the same price point, which one would you pick?

IDK if I should take a dual-core i3-6100 or a quad-core A10-7860k. Thanks in advance.

AMD processors are old so you basically always want to get an intel one for now. They're just newer and better. Build looks good but you'll need storage (you might have it but it's not listed).

I would get a better rated PSU (shoot for at least 80+ bronze tier). Not that much more expensive and it should be higher quality. Also I would look for deals on rx470 4gbs. You might be able save $30 for like 10% less performance, and since you've got a 6100 a 470 is more than enough anyway (medium-high settings on games like GTA). If you can't find a cheaper 470 the 1060 3gb should be fine.

The A10-7860K is not really a quad core. It's more like an i3, 2 cores, but runs 4 threads. It's not quite the same and it doesn't work nearly as well.

It's not even close.
So something like this would be best.

Here's my start: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Dy63gL
Haven't picked a mobo yet because how the hell does an idiot like me pick a mobo (I'm happy with the size of Micro ATX).
Will pick a case around the size I have now or smaller (ATXmid or micro)

this might be an oxymoron but i'd like to be able to build a somewhat portable / mATX video editing machine. budget ~2k usd / whatever is reasonable to grab the good stuff around currently.
have an AMD card atm but absolutely not going back to AMD, getting one of the 3 new nvidia cards no matter what. (also because AMD has terrible support with adobe rendering implementations)
peripherals (monitors, keyboards etc) and and storage would not need to be considered in this possible build. storage as in hdd/sdd, would need RAM.
32 gbs of RAM would be nice as even with the 16 gbs I have currently, I can hit the limit and have to start closing some stuff.
would appreciate knowing if a portable build for this use is not possible, because i'm not too sure on it.
also don't really care about purchasing windows. i'd either use one bought before or acquire through some means.
thanks setsul / whoever :)

Budget?
Overclocking yes/no?
What are you going to use it for?
#1916
Overclocking yes/no?
ECC yes/no?
When are you going to build? Zen should be very interesting for editing.
How portable? Depending on how many SSDs/HDDs you need mini ITX would be possible.
Which 3 new nVidia cards do you mean? No matter how I count it doesn't add up to 3.
Also are you absolutely sure this is about AMD vs nVidia and not just consumer vs professional? I mean did you confirm that it would run better on a GeForce. Because some things are down to OpenCL vs CUDA, but some are due to Radeon vs FirePro / GeForce vs Quadro.

Never touched over clocking before but I don't see much reason to fear it without thought. I guess I'm apathetic to over clocking.
Not sure what ecc is.
When is zen coming out? I'm likely to build before mid January.
The situation is that im not completely sure on how I'm using it, but I'm guessing I might be moving it between locations somewhat frequently. Maybe you should ask me a few more questions or let me know what kind of form factor is ideal for what use and I can give a better answer
On storage the biggest use is archiving project files but I could just get like a ssd to work on then when its close to full move it to a terabyte drive. I never have any reason to install new programs.
Sorry I was thinking about the 1080/1070/1060. I've used both (amd & nvidia) throughout my past builds and AMD has always been like consistently unreliable with display driver crashes and just general bugginess I feel. Would rather just pay a bit more for nvidia and not deal with all that especially since i'm doing editing so I'm risking crashing while editing. Obviously I could be wrong and im just unlucky or something but I'm not very comfortable getting another amd card, I use a r9 280x atm.
Also don't think I can afford a quadro.

Not so much with PC building but it fits in... I'm wanting to do a fresh install of windows 10 on my PC but I have a disk for windows and not a disk drive. Wondering if there's a way top do it without, I have a legit product key etc just no disk drive.

Some effort involved, more expensive and it makes small form factors difficult. So I'd rather not if you don't absolutely want to for TF2 or whatever.
I'm referring to error correcting RAM.
January.
How will you be moving it? I mean if you have to move the monitor etc as well then mATX is probably fine.
So one 2.5" bay and one 3.5" bay should be enough.
Ah well. There's also the 1050, 1050 Ti and Titan X which are all newer so I was a bit confused. Btw the 1060 3GB and 1060 6GB are not the same card either.
nVidia has released at least 4 drivers this year that caused crashes on most system so idk if that'll improve.
Depends on the Quadro. Depends how much your GPU bound.
You should probably figure out what CPU/GPU balance you need. No point in getting a 1080 if it's stuck at 50% load because you should've gotten a CPU with 2 more cores instead. What's currently the weakest link? Current CPU?
