LainSideshowIf we were gonna move game-mode I'd advocate quite a few before getting to PL. PL sucks in tf2 which is a movement based game unlike OW and excels with fast-paced teamfights back and forth across a map.
I actually would like to hear what you'd have in mind. Payload is 100% a no-go, but A/D seems like it could work.

Sideshow is probably the single biggest advocate of bringing back A/D in the form of gravelpit.

Second, OW is a bigger esport than tf2 because blizzard backs OW much more than tf2. Why does LoL have insane prize pots and such? The primary answer is dev support and backing. The most support we've gotten over the past year from valve regarding direct support to the competitive scene was the tf2 wide notification that the esea grand finals were happening. Some might put valve members committing to work with top players with MM and the MM beta over it, but we're definitely not having pro matches casted on national television like CSGO or 6 to 7 digit prize pots for majors like dota.

Third, even if you were to design smaller maps for payload, you wouldn't really be able to balance it between tiny chokes where one defense class would trump basically all of the other classes. Basically the equivalent of a full turtle defense in 6s would be the standard for defense, and offense wouldnt be much more interesting. Like just look at the pros vs YouTubers match on badwater. Although it was really just a big field day for froyo, 6v6 payload should remain an OW exclusive thing. And despite the lolhl memes that exist, pl fits nicely for the 9v9 format that we already have. And at the class composition you'd be looking into with 6v6, there's no good reason to not put 3 more players on each team and just go on with how things have been running for a long time now.

Lastly, more map types would more likely confuse newer competitive players rather than make it easier for them. How is some poor kid who can't even navigate cp steel supposed to comprehend the fact that there's a time limit and a number of points that need to be capped you do pl, much less know what classes are good and bad when hes never tried anything other than spy or sniper. Also, making a temporary influx of lower level players into the competitive scene doesn't ensure its growth by a long shot. When this shit came out everybody was playing it on console and on PC, similar to the reaction OW is getting right now. Players wouldn't show up on time for their ETF2L/ESEA matches because they were in a RL match. That's tardiness. As we all know:

Formula of Professionalism in eSportsTardiness =/= unprofessionalism
Unprofessionalism = no eSport even though there's are some dumb ass motherfuckers in the eSports illuminati

This game was killing TF2 before OW was killing TF2 for the same god damn reasons, but better. It's closer to TF2 than OW is for a multitude of reasons, including but not limited to:

  1. Its eSports scene is smaller than the big boys' scenes like CS:GO or DOTA 2.
  2. It actually follows team colours rather than team-coloured outlines.
  3. It has hats.

This game is literally automobiles - with hats - playing football/soccer, and this motherfucking game has/had a league in both MLG and ESL a month or two after it came out. After extensive research I've pulled out of my anus, official competitive TF2 illuminati scientists have concluded what makes this game so successful: it's already using a tried and tested real sport (football/soccer) to break through into the eSports world.

That is exactly what TF2 needs to do at this point: it needs to copy a real sport. No, not more Mario Kart Bumper Car mods, NASCAR isn't as accessible as something like football/soccer. And what is the closest thing TF2 has to RL or football/soccer?

If the TF2 devs want us to put more than 15 people in the MM queues before they declare MM a good use of their money/time, they should add Pass Time to the 6v6 MM rotation. We can use unlocks, all classes, no-class limits, and put more development into good Pass Time maps, because the first map that comes with a new TF2 game mode is always garbage and kills that game mode immediately. To add onto the immediate 100% guaranteed community approval it will have, it appeals to the greatest of TF2 players who like the situation-based classes that aren't Scout, Soldier, Medic, and Demoman - especially Engineers. Out of any team fps game, CS has the easiest to understand and one of the most well balanced objectives, having an asymmetrical gamemode can eliminate most stalemating as rounds can only last a certain length in which the attacking team has to complete the objective.

I think the best version of an A/D gamemode would be something like mountainlab (although obviously not actually that map lmao) where you have a linear A/D map, but with the change that red can recap the points.

To make this work you'd have to make it so that point captures didn't add cap time (at least not for red recaptures) and make it so the 2nd point caps quicker than the 1st and the 3rd caps quicker than the 2nd like on a 5cp map, giving the attacking team a chance to backcap the defending team, but making it significantly harder for the defending team to backcap the attacking team.

This would basically be like 5cp cut in half and made into A/D, it might eliminate stalemate issues as the attacking team are always under pressure to cap last, but the defending team always have an incentive to push out on an advantage to retake an if they get enough picks on last. The issue with this type of map is that it eliminates midfights compared to 5cp (which are a pretty interesting part of the game) and it's always going to be significantly harder to balance an asymmetrical map compared to a symmetrical one.

Lain's A/D koth gamemode also sounds pretty interesting and I'd like to try it out.
