I play MGE a decent bit but I still miss a lot of shots. Is SOAP or regular Pugs better for improving my ingame DM?

what alot of people do is that they only focus on their aim and not anticipate the enemy's movement

try to predict where your enemy is going to be

Play higher level pugs, play MGE against classes that bother you or when they're in situations that bother you. Like for example, if scouts with height advantage screw you over all the time do that in MGE, etc.

my opinion is generally

-mge to refine shots and movement

-pugs to pay attention to how people are more likely to move and for sik fragvid skydirects

-dm it depends, i think it's probably better for demos to actually practice sticky aim and pipe aim but i dunno for soldiers

kinda depends on what you like, but i'm pretty sure that you should just pug more

inb4 you get chastised because people have made threads like this before, and the general consensus is that you have to just keep practicing. Let me say again, that there is no substitute for practice, practice, and more practice.

To humor your question though, some people say that mge is better, some say DM servers are better, some people are very critical of either modes of practice. I think that mge can be a waste of time if you aren't playing people who are better than you or at least give you a good challenge. But I think MGE supplements SOAP DM and vice versa.

Again, the bottom line is that you just have to practice and practice and practice more.

As for pugs, pugs are kind of meh... Depending on who you're playing with, pugs can vary from a joke/shitfest to a good challenge and learning experience, but the former is what my experience is. There are things you can get away with in pugs that you wouldn't always get away with in a real scrim/match. Play pugs for fun, try to be smart when you play them but don't expect to take too much from it.

Did I mention that you just have to keep practicing?

just practice a lot, i mean a lot a lot. and the key thing is to not get discouraged when you aren't playing as well as other people, or your dm isn't on par with others. you'll slowly get there just takes patience, time and practice practice practice

DM != aim

Assuming that you don't have problems with overshooting or turning around (->wrong sens) aim is just a matter of practice.

MGE = aim + dodging vs 1 enemy
DM = aim + dodging vs multiple enemies
pugs = gamesense + aim + dodging in a real 6v6 game

Unless your gamesense, decision making and all that stuff is already perfect you should play pugs anyway.

For raw aim if that is your problem i'd say
solly: MGE > DM > pugs

scout vs scout: MGE > DM > pugs
scout vs everything: DM > MGE > pugs

demo: pug ~ pub (pugs require more thinking so you can't focus on your aim that much bt you'll see better movement/dodging)
most DM servers and the player on there are not demo friendly
demo in MGE pls no

medic: battle medic (doublemixes ~ pubs)

If you play soap dm as soldier never get high ground and take the hardest shots possible. If people shoot you from high ground go for directs instead of counter-jumping. A lot of soldiers just counter-jump and sit at high ground, doesn't make any sense to me since you won't get better quickly if you only shoot at the ground in a training mod. Do not play training mods to win them, play them so you'll get better.

For me at least, i feel that i get better at DM from just playing in PUGs. MGE/DM is also good but it's really up to your style of play. If you enjoy the atmosphere of MGE and DM and if you feel that you're improving that way then do that. There's tons of different methods and techniques people use to get better, but i believe each person has their own way to get better and it really comes down to you and what you find more beneficial. Try all of the ideas people suggest to you and find out which one you enjoy the most and which one you're more comfortable with. Sorry if this isn't helpful.

improving in anything is about practicing and pushing yourself. The practicing part implies a big time investment. The pushing yourself part involves trying new things, going for that hard shot you usually wont.

As someone who ONLY does MGE, DM and pugs, I'll throw in my $0.02.

MGE:

Pros: Great practice for soldier, great practice for demo (if using pipes), great practice for scout (movement)
Cons: Not really great for point-and-click TF2 because of the automatic reload. The time it takes to reload 6 scatters means a lot more to your game than most people care to admit. Plus, no one wants to play against a fully buffed scout jumping on and off a platform the entire time.

DM:

Pros: Great practice for any combat class regarding accuracy.
Cons: Terrible practice for any combat class regarding movement. 4 out of 5 times you're going to get killed/kill someone by shooting them in the back when they're not trying to avoid you.

Pugs:

Pros: Best practice for dm IMO. In-game setting, not a lot of cohesion on the team. DM means everything.
Cons: Unbalanced teams, being on a team with Trademark.

keep a positive attitude and practice. Try not change any settings unless absolutely necessary. Such as sensitivity, it is preference to a large extent. It won't happen over night, just keep with it.

This is not the way to play. Taking the hardest shots possible is not how you kill people. If you're going to try to kill someone with height advantage as a soldier, you jump them. I'm not saying to camp the roof in DM, but you should practice things you're actually going to do in a game.
