So, I'm really impressed with 5G. I haven't used it, but I've read the specs of it, and wonder, if technology keeps advancing, is it possible the gaming barriers come down, and the leagues standing become as latency riddled as LANs, like the US zones, versus the ETF2L zones, and that we can play around the world with the same latency as I get from say, CO to CHI?
If so, what do you think will change?

I am too lazy to do the math, but I think the main issue with ping is we are limited to sending information at the speed of light. I am not sure how much we can decrease ping with better hardware, it may not be much improvement at all.

I suppose you didn't realize that copper wiring will perhaps slow down signals and won't be able to carry a high signal strength over large distances, and running fiber / optical to each and every house or datacenter is already expensive.

in short yes; we can beam data as fast as possible but whatever is receiving the data must process it and that takes the most time; based on current technology and principles to handle that system contrivance, we wouldn't see any difference like lower pings to servers

like your shots don't register instantly but you can still feel your movement and reload/shot timings instantly on your client before it actually is actually registered on the server, and there's also a bit of client-side prediction for the movement of other players.

Considering this, we're already pretty close to the theoretical minimum that actual in-game ping could reach. Which makes sense because most of the actual backbone internet is fiber-optic (i.e. light speed) already, and you have to include processing time at either end + various intermediary points anyway. As a result, the need for intercontinental LANs will never go away, and ping from NA to EU will never get under ~100ms. Thanks Einstein.
