If you are vaccinated like you should be, there is basically no risk of major complications, especially for our age demographic. Let people decide for themselves whether it’s safe or not. If you think it’s unsafe? Fine. Don’t go. If you go to lan unvaccinated and get sick, that’s on you, and nobody should have to miss out on some amazing experiences because some irresponsible people might get sick.

nobody was calling anyone stupid for trying to stay safe or saying that the reason for the cancellation was bad. people are just disappointed that its not happening because they personally were willing to go with everyone else that was willing to go. It would have been the fault of the individual who weighed the risks in their head beforehand if they had gotten sick at lan.

Mfw I just got approved for that week off (unpaid).
I haven't seen anything about cancellation on either the DH website or Twitter, should we be expecting an update soon?

There will be an update on their end soon, I believe there are certain things they need to set up before they formally announce it.

kind of sadge that this is getting cancelled while other games like smash continue to run lans without any complications, bars are open, my uni has 400+ person in person lectures etc. Like can we not just require vaccination and masks inside the venue and call it a day like everyone else does.
any chance you guys can reschedule for Dallas or Atlanta

I mean I felt like I was clearly not talking about you. Obviously getting a ticket refunded in the form of a "credit" is something I'd be pissed about and is just disgusting airline shit. Getting disappointed in a LAN not happening because of covid is absolutely fine and has been a staple of life since 2020. Directing that disappointment at decisions that keep the collective whole safe or muh lack of freedom is something else entirely. I think you are reading selectively if you do not see any posts that satisfy those viewpoints. And another good one since I stopped reading the thread yesterday:

I agree with your sentiment considering the event organizers and more so the government have an obligation to mandate things related to overall public health concerns.

If this was in 2020, I would wholly support canceling this event to slow the spread. But now, the vaccine exists, and it means events that require vaccinations or a negative test have very low infection rates, around .05% in the case of Lollapalooza, which saw crowds over 100k daily, with masks not being universally used. It was outdoors though. I guess for some, 2-3 infections for a tf2 lan is an unacceptable risk, but it is evident that for most people, the risk is minimal enough to justify, as is the case for multiple in-person CS:GO majors, or Smash tournaments with well over a thousand entrants.

I would imagine an outdoors event would make a large impact on the data there, but either way I don't necessarily disagree with this take from an individual standpoint. It's fine if you'd want to go or whatever. I probably would too if I lived nearby, especially since I'll be getting a booster pretty soon. But in light of omicron, and according to Dreamhack, covid cases on the rise, it makes sense that the event is canceled. It sucks, but it's probably for the best. Like, it's not unhinged or weird or whatever to want to go to a TF2 LAN if you're vaccinated, and it's not weird to be disappointed that you can't go to something you might've already paid for or scheduled time for, but it is a little weird to just start blaming the government or Dreamhack for being too safe, insinuating they're stupid or crazy or something. There's a reason experts are consulted on matters like this and not TF2 forum posters.

At this point in time we do not wish to confirm anything, but we are engaging in a dialogue with DreamHack and others to explore our options for the 2022 year. Given the recency of this cancellation, we want to assure any loose ends as a result of this decision are closed before we look to the next event.

Yyyaaaooo!!!
I've been on vacation (flying home today actually), so didn't get a chance to chime in sooner but wanted to say some things.
Obvious this is a major bummer, the NA TF2 community has been craving a LAN comparable to Insomnia or Copenhagen for years. It's quite sad that we got our hopes up once more only to watch them crash again. We are used to that as a community, and we are undettered.
I am biased as I have a professional relationship with DreamHack, but I wanted to urge the community to maintain faith in the company and their ability to facilitate TF2 events. They're not going to hand anything to us on a silver platter. We have to put in the work, but there have been a lot of foundations laid over the years for us to build off of. I've witnessed other community driven non top tier esports thrive at dream hack like Rocket League and Halo. If we can bring the bodies and staff, DreamHack can provide the venue, PC rentals, network, and broadcast support.
DreamHack is a huge festival, so their risk is different than what RGL or another small community run LAN would face. COVID is still troublesome but it won't be forever. Get your vaccine and booster PLEASE. There have been many stories in esports about younger people passing from COVID, don't be stubborn, go pick up a "health pack" so the Medics can focus their heals elsewhere.
On a more personal note, I'm sad that the Burnsiders team we assembled won't be able to compete in Anaheim. I was amazed that RoL was able to assemble a great squad where only one of our players hadn't played with us before. Shout-out to RoL, LeCrum, Cerby, AvoidingJoker, Lorgon, and trxz. Also shout-out to Failwizard and Zaboomafoo who were going to drive down as well.

DreamHackAfter much deliberation we've ended up at the hard decision of cancelling DreamHack Anaheim 2022 due to the increased difficulties in hosting the event in the qualitative manner we strived for.
For more info please read the full statement:
https://dreamhack.com/blog/2021/12/14/dreamhack-anaheim-2022-cancelled/
Measures should now be in place for people to get refunds if they have purchased a ticket. We will assist where possible although any queries regarding the refunding process should be directed towards DreamHack first, as we have no involvement on that side.
With that being said, we will continue to monitor the COVID situation to determine when and where it is safe to bring LAN back to the global TF2 audience. If you are aware of any events, organisers, or venues that you believe could be a place for a viable and sustainable LAN competition please don't hesitate to get in contact with one of the EssentialsTF team leads.
