Looking to upgrade my CPU. Mostly just for TF2 and other old badly optimized games. Currently got a Ryzen 5 3600. Idk how much single thread performance matters vs. overall benchmarks. Assistance/recommendations for the same socket would be appreciated.

Doesnt TF2 actually run better on intel due to its code being unbelievably scuffed for multi-thread processing?

That being said I have a ryzen 7 5800x and i average like 160 fps in game most of the time and I've basically left it running since I got it when it came out. definitely enough for a majority of modern games too. I used to have the same chip as you and never had any issues honestly, i only updated it to play modern games on ultra settings. I don't think you will see that big of an improvement if you go from ryzen-ryzen

I have a ryzen 5800x and I get 300+ frames on mid, if you're on a budget a 5600x will still be a nice improvement over the ryzen 5 3600 for source games like tf2.

Ryzen 7 5700x gets me 200-350ish fps for most maps on casual mode w the med-low mastercomfig setting so it do be a cool ol cpu for like 2 hundo euros

Do you have a budget?
For games, the fastest you can get would be the 5800X3D.
Though as always, we can't rule out TF2 being weird until someone tests it.
Otherwise, and as a cheaper option, my recommendation would be the 5600X. I doubt the extra two cores of the 5800X (not X3D) would do anything, and the extra 0.1 GHz are really not worth how much more it costs.

My goal to upgrade to get a 240hz monitor and a cpu able to maintain 240fps in 6s for less than $500. GPU is RX580 but i doubt tf2 would need more than that.

5600 is great (upgraded from 1600) but not sure how much of a diff you'd see coming from a 3600. FPS is around 300 in 6s and a little less than that in pubs

also this

Funkywaxalso thispls don't use this website it's garbage

It's garbage for the aggregate scores, for something like tf2 sorting by 1 core performance is honestly totally fine. It's not as though they fudge the numbers on the benchmarks themselves, they only suffer from being based on less scientific datasets.
I hate how overhated the site in general is as a result of soytubers complaining.

I went from a 3700x to a 5800x and trust me it was worth it for supporting 240 fps in most situations.
zen 2 just can't support 240 fps in all scenarios, even in 6s.

in tf even 5600x for 240 hz is enough, but if you wanna play diff games like cod, apex etc n u have decent gpu then sure go for 5800x3d, but idk how good is idea to buy past gen cpu, anyway all in your hands and don't forger about good cooling system.

URL is outdated but they list 240hz monitors. I've heard mixed things about viewsonic but their price is usually cheaper compared to the competition,
