Via HLDS:
These changes make the SteamPipe server and client interoperable with the non-SteamPipe server and client. (Any client can connect with any server.) We expect many more clients to opt into the beta after this change. (And remember, we are planning on flipping the switch next Tuesday which forces all clients to convert.)
So if you switch, you can now connect to non-steampipe servers from the new steampipe client. Make sure to back up your maps, configs, huds, etc. when you switch.

went to opt in and my steam crashed midway.

tried again and fucking steam crashed again
EDIT: I got it, delete or move shit out of your tf directory. I removed a lot of my old demos and it works now. I guess your directory can't be that large or it'll fuck up?
also I moved out my files in my tf directory that weren't related to tf2, that might have been it

I've heard that steam freezes up during the update but you just have to let it run and it will let you know when it's done.

I did the update a few days ago (like an idiot) so I'm glad I can play on more than 4 servers.
In terms of steam crashing, just let it convert the files, don't touch steam once conversion has started, it will just crash.

Hmm, I put all the stuff in the tf/custom/ folder and my configs work but my HUD files do not. You can just copy all the stuff from the old tf/ directory into the new custom/ directory right?

Packing omphud inside a vpk file doesn't load the correct fonts
EDIT: fixed it temporarily by placing the fonts inside custom/mystuff/resources
