Well if it was possible maybe lotus can do a day where they get the entire bpm team to teach new players on one their servers map strats, tips and tricks, do's and dont's, etc etc. Maybe this can close in that skill gap between classes and intrest other communities to do the same?
If it all boils down to getting in good with big-name pub servers to promote events and streams, why not play ball with them instead of just saying "we need to get advertised on a pub server"? Sitting here and collecting +frags ain't gonna do any of us any good. See what it will take. Ask them, "if you can help us, how can we help you?". If it comes down to paying for ad space over that stupid "Pinion Pot of Gold" bullshit, do it. I'd personally rather be blocked for 5 or 8 seconds to read a quick non-HTML MOTD promoting TF.tv or some upcoming event than sit for upwards of 40 seconds staring at the words "YOU CAN JOIN IN X SECONDS OR STAY TUNED FOR PINION POT OF GOLD".
My point is that ideas are all well & good - ACTING on them is where the real money comes in. On an incredibly small and personal scale, if I hadn't acted on enlisting Harbl for the Shazbowl I don't think we could have won if it was just me in command. Also after the Shazbowl, I made a lot of talk about opening up competitive play for T:A to the crowd of friends and followers we garnered after it. My crew and I had to play ball with some of the most resistant developers I've ever seen in my life, but we managed to open up the whitelist for as many people as I could (which ended up only totaling about 35 or 40 people, but we got some matches down). Gotta take these ideas about going out into pubs and promoting the environment and boosting streams and act on them. I don't know what I can do myself but I'm willing to help out anyone who has an idea and wants to do something with it.

Can't wait for Bradford Ross's FLANK_DOMINATOR Flakes. They'll go great with Johnathan Wendel's Cashews of Chaos.

I think you guys are missing the point with the whole streaming / pubbers thing.
Appealing to pubbers is great, but at the end of the day we need to have content here for them to enjoy. I think it's great that you guys are suggesting different types of content that we can create (instant replays, match reruns, etc.) but someone has to do the work and actually make that stuff happen. People have to step up and create that content.
Props to guys like Crack Clan who have created an entire youtube channel dedicated to helping teach people the game. MyGamingEdge did the same thing. Props to Radium and LondonCalling for putting so much effort into those ESEA-Open predictions. And Enigma for creating this website.
You don't need a super computer or streaming capabilities to create TF2 content. It's on everyone here to step up and do it. If you don't step up and do something, I'm not so sure that you have the right to complain that nothing is happening or that the scene isn't growing.
Creating content -- in whatever way you can -- is what will bring people into this game.
If we focus on our own community and making this place great for us as players, others will come.
If we focus too much on appealing to others we may lose sight of why we are here in the first place.

TerraI agree that the biggest issue with the growth of competitive TF2 right now is that people don't know it exists.
I believe this is one of the biggest issues, but also I wonder, if people are interested in competitive TF2. Even some pubbers know of it, but just wish not to play. Getting known is one thing, then we have to rely on getting more people interested in it. If there was a more simple guide like Terra said on the front page, it might be able to keep someone looking around there and try it out.

crumpet#11 nobody wants to pay for pugs on a shitty client when they get them for free already
And that's why I said make them not terrible. Incentives such as winning small prizes can mitigate the cost to pay. Actually having a system where hackers can't ruin pugs would be something that is worthwhile. The more we were to actually use ESEA pugs the lower the possibility of ESEA dropping us.

ESEA just increased the tf2 prize pot, made invite bigger, and appear to be scheming up a main division in the future (moving up all 16 open playoff teams). I don't think they're going to drop us.
Not that I disagree with the notion that using the ESEA pug system would be a good idea.

i think yall need to stop worrying about it and just play your game. various people (including myself) have been obsessed with the 'future' of tf2 for as long as i can remember. be happy that the game has lasted as long as it has, it doesn't need to be a huge esport.
What I said primarily with about ads was a two pronged thing.
On the one hand we make everybody who watches aware of important community contributors (mge archive, iT, whatever you want) and on the other we show that we're willing to commercialize ourselves and can provide a baseline for how successful such commercialization could be - but to start it has no real monetary goal.
The main reason I suggested it instead of acting upon it personally is because I am in no way affiliated with tf.tv other than being a user of it. We'd have to have enigma, or some other trusted individual go to people like Lotus et al and talk to them about mutually beneficial relationships (more people interested in a f2p game's comp scene could bring many people back into the pubs or bring new people to pub thus mutual benefit). For pubs it's just as easy as having a little text notice come into the chat every now and again about tf.tv in exchange for us plugging their servers before casts or during half time - it's simple.

ComangliaI am not going to name people or anything, but certain server communities don't care and almost hate competitive TF2. On the grounds that Competitive Players block HTML mod, don't pub that often (at least that what they think), and their user base might become like that and stop going to their servers.
The larger Server communities (with a few exceptions like lotus) also don't want to sponsor players or teams, because it would be "unfair" to the rest of the community who is already interested in competitive tf2.
While there are some communities that behave the way you're describing (I've experienced them firsthand, I put my feelers out to multiple communities and got positive responses from more than just Lotus, and I think it's really just a matter of actually stepping up and DOING it, like people in this thread are saying. Lotus (and others) were just like "uh, okay, sure!"
Admittedly the promotion could have been done better but I think this is the first time something like this had been done and it was a learning experience. :)
As others have said though, promotion is great but we need the material here for viewers. I don't really know if I have the voice/gamesense to cast but camerawork seems like something I could do and I'd love to figure out the intricacies of that sometime soon...

How about a "hub" so to speak, similar to dota where watching games is extremely easy to do, and possibly limiting it to ESEA IM, Invite, and Platinum HL. This, in my mind would help to get more people watching, and hopefully more people playing.
A lot of these ideas are great but they're just ideas. Go out do what you're suggesting instead of waiting for somebody else to do it.
truth is most people are pretty lazy. it's easy to come up with ideas. much harder to actually do something with those ideas.

Something small I saw another guy doing that I started doing as well was using a [TF.TV] tag since I pub a lot. I was surprised at how many people asked me about it and I directed them to the site. While I did get a few disparaging comments about competitive for the most part people seemed excited about it and sounded like they would potentially check out the site. Might help if more people threw on the tag when they pubbed. It's minuscule, tiny, even, but it's better than nothing I suppose.
DNJplayers (especially invite ones) need to treat it like a competitive game. while really fun and great, no one will take us seriously if we keep spamming inside jokes and taking 45 minutes to join a fucking server.

Hey, so I took it upon myself to create a Competitive TF2 guide for people interested in joining the community + becoming a competitive player, and for the people who are already in the comp. scene but are new and want to learn.
I don't have much right now, but I will continuously work on it until I feel it's absolutely complete.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JlwTva7IjbJoAOQ5cMAG9NvqBzMA_7LIUpTEHYkojSg
You can view + comment on the document with the link above. I absolutely will take any advice on what I could put in it or change. I plan on doing things such as what websites are essential to the community, how to find what class you should play, how to play maps, how to connect to IRC, etc. It's gonna be big.
I would also like help from anyone who knows how to make pictures (drawing or whatever) that I can use for different sections of the document.

yeah and they should call it teamfortress.tv oh wait
I think that tf2 really needs a true newbie league. even the majority of people in ugc 6v6 steel are better than the average pubber. we need a ugc iron 6v6 division.
Another thing i think we should do is have noobs only DM servers. practicing DM is pretty hard for newer players because everybody in MGE is going to rape them and their souls and everybody in soap DM is better than 99% of the people that they've ever played. You probably get better faster if you're playing people 100x better than you but its also ridiculously frustrating when your kdr is 8:50. It will probably be tricky to regulate, but a place where baddies can fight other baddies in order to get less bad wouldn't be a bad thing. wow thats a lot of bads.

I think we should have 2 servers maybe, DEDICATED to only Newbies, for DM and MGE if that's so then. But...there are some trolls in the TF2 community that would just go in and crush them. The only way to get past this is if they had a friend at their level they wanted to mge with.

The first time I ever used MGE I lost 20-0 to Loronix who played a shotgun only soldier. I was expecting to perform poorly and didn't worry about it, but I did feel genuinely bad to have wasted somebody else's time like that and as such did not try to MGE again for a long while. And I've heard similar comments from other people.

This is something that literally anyone can do to help promote tf.tv and comp in general.
The only problem is that tf.tv's frontpage is extremely overwhelming for someone who has never seen it before. You're instantly bombarded with "featured content & news" and other things that a pubber wouldn't know or care about (all of this isn't necessarily "quality content" from the perspective of a pubber). There needs to be a site we can promote that's to help pubbers adjust from pubbers to people interested in comp and participants.

I dont know about anyone else, but I dont find comp tf2 interesting to watch at all. Ever since i quit playing it myself, I dont feel compelled to watch any casts, and if i do the only interesting parts are the middies or headshots.
Maybe its because its a fresh game, or its just the kind of person I am, but Dota 2 is much more interesting to watch than TF2, even if you play the game at a low level.

pet_alt_altthe key to growing competitive tf2 is convincing people that it's a good game. unfortunately as soon as they play it, they'll realize that's a lie
really? everyone i've introduced to comp tf2 has said they can never go back to pubs the same way they used to.

It depends on the game, but high level teams dont seem to just leave the lanes alone until each side can get some farm. I think dota does a pretty good job of rewarding aggression, especially as the game drags on.
But yes, there are portions of the game that are just farming, and those are boring as fuck. Just how stalemating and building uber in tf2 are kind of boring to sit through.
The funnest games to watch are when a team tries to employ a risky or unusual strategy or draft.

Gonna play devil's advocate - Dota 2 might not be interesting to watch, but competitive TF2 is completely boring to those who just sit in pubs and play pyro/spy/engineer/heavy. Highlander is more attractive to those people, but even then they'll see one match play through and go "guess that's it let's pack the bags and saddle up back to the ol' 24/7 instarespawn 2fort server". On the other extreme, matches could drag on for really long periods of time. Not sure if you were around for the days of Yukon (god I hope that pizzashit is out of rotation) but those games could go on for unbearably long times in stalemates. Those are boring even for people who love 6s play.
In defense of TF2, I may like playing have friends who make playing Dota 2 fun, but god damn watching streams of it that aren't SingSing's or a game TobiWan is casting is like pulling teeth.
Come to think of it, we could actually use someone like TobiWan for TF2. Do we have someone like that? Hope it's not extine.
