I usually go by word of mouth. If there's someone who's had the professor before and there's a majority of unfavorable things about him, I don't choose that professor. A lot of my old classmates used RMP for courses outside CompSci/IT/Mathematics because a majority of the math professors on my campus all taught CS and IT courses too and the ratings on RMP for everyone outside those departments were pretty accurate.

I did make the mistake of believing that if a teacher is hard but intelligent, he can automatically teach well.

This website is my bible, it is accurate. Don't pay attention to the scores so much, it's the comments people leave that are important. Look for stuff such as "easy marker", "posts notes online", "SPEAKS ENGLISH" etc...

One of the ratings for one of the teachers in my high school states, "We were literally rolling joints in the back of the class and she couldn't even notice" , I can confirm that this is 100 percent true and that it was the most clueless teacher ever.

I used ourumd.com, which is specific to my Uni. If your Uni has a popular site specific to it, it would probably be more reliable.

Even better is knowing people at your school and asking who to take.

The ratings aren't very useful because everyone has a different idea of which number of stars/whatever they use these days means. On the other hand, the comments are extremely valuable, you can quite easily get a feeling for if a teacher is any good or not based off 2 or 3 pages of comments.

As long as you realize that some of the negative comments are from dumbasses who just weren't willing to put in any effort for the class, it can be useful. A majority of the comments I read turned out to be fair and accurate though, and sometimes people give useful advice pertaining to the professor's grading style and course structure.

I used that in the past. But the best is https://www.myedu.com b/c they compile a list of actual grades from the university on averages from a professor and ppl can rate the professors there. It used to cost $5.00 a semester, but I think it is a free service now...

One of my professors made alt accounts and posted on his on profile with varying opinions and views on himself. I would show examples but apparently my school doesn't exist in their database atm. As long as your professors aren't like mine I guess you are fine.

My school has it's own "rate my professor" (Bruinwalk). It was pretty accurate, though some people complain a lot (you can tell by how they wrote the review how biased they are).

depends on how big your school is, bigger schools have more accurate ratings aka mine. Same for bigger classrooms.

a combination of ratemyprofessor and word of mouth around the school will give you the most accurate rating of a professor, also make sure your opinions from people are based on the professor, and not the class they taught, because i have had plenty of profs who taught boring as fuck classes but were good professors

Everyone's pretty much hit everything, word-by-mouth + site, comments not rating, talk about the teacher vs class since a fun class can be ruined by a bad teach and the opposite, but don't forget that just because everyone says great things about the teach shit can still happen. The most popular teacher at my high school hated me and I hated him with an equal passion. Sometimes people just don't click or do click when nobody else has, these options give you a head start but may not be how it turns out.

its a double edge sword. if a teacher is hard and grades harshly they will get a bad. my mother for example has a bad score on the site but loves her job and has amazing test scores but just grades papers and project harshly so kids don't like her because of it. But all in all its an okay site.

Usually true, but be careful to look up what class they are rating. I've had a prof be utter shit in one class (found out they didn't want to teach it bu budget cuts forced them to make her teach it) but really good in the subject area she actually liked/taught.
