Airblast is a cool idea and all, but the fact that it deals mini-crit back isn't reasonable. I think it should still deal the same damage considering the ammo it costs is pretty low. Pyro is just known as a crit-shit class since everybody just goes Degreaser+Flaregun+Axtinguisher mainly. I miss how flare gun wouldn't do a crit, and only axtinguisher would I feel like it kills the point of axtinguisher.
Powerjack + Detanator + backburner = Roamer Pyro
Just throwin that out there
Just throwin that out there
I honestly don't mind most of the pyro attributes listed in this thread. The only keyboard-smashing, monitor-punching, rage-inducing thing about pyro is the fucking tractor beam airblast. Reflect my projectiles? fine. Crit me with flares/axe? I had it coming. Push me in the direction that you airblasted? ok fine. But airblast me and cause me to lose all momentum in any direction so I'm just hanging uselessly in the middle of the air? FUCK YOU YOU PIECE OF SHIT.
Detonater getting spammed across the map, some flanking pyro with the backburner kills you immediately, and reflecting every single projectile you throw at it. Sure some pyros might be that good to reflect nearly everything, but it just gets annoying. The only time you'll actually need a pyro really is holding last for obvious reasons, other than that, you're just trolling both your own team and the other team...
I don't like it because it feels so inconsistent. If it had better representation of where it's range and damage were I feel like it'd be more interesting to play against, especially if airblast was tweaked to function more like a rocket blast and let players keep their previous momentum. It's a cool class that has a ton of problems that are easier to band aid to with unlocks than actively work on. A solid pyro rework would probably be my favorite update since it could make pubs more bearable by making a simple class more skill indexed and make comp more interesting by increasing the viability and usability of a fairly unique class.
Fuck airblast as it is though
seriously

I kinda just want to throw this out there, pyro's pretty much a tank too.
no other class in tf2 has as much hp as pyro without any movement speed debuffs

I dislike pyro just because of the fact that I have 25 hours on it in my whole life and I can still pub/lobbystomp with it on same level as my soldier/scout/demo (300+ hours on each). Degreaser+Flare Gun+Axtinguisher combo is really fucking easy to use (at least in pubs and HL lobbies). And well, just overall, it is much more frustrating to play against pyros than against any other class (maybe besides for heavy and mini sentry)
Instead of the pyro being based around skill based gameplay and thoughtful player input.
Its focused around weapons and buffs that give the class incredibly stupid and unnecessary stat boosts. People love the class because they think they are playing well while in reality, they are just playing a class with stacks and stacks of ridiculous stat buffs.
Lets do a rundown of all the things that keep getting stacked onto the class
- You can airblast 10 times before running out of ammo
- The airblast cool down rate was decreased in a patch back in 2011
- You can control enemy movement with an airblast, which you can use 10 times
- You can reflect enemy projectiles and cause them to deal 35% more damage...which you can do 10 times
- You can switch weapons 65% faster. Because switching weapons was really hard before.
- You can deal 90 damage on targets that are on fire with the flaregun, good thing you can control their movements and switch weapons 65% faster.
- You can deal a full crit on burning targets with the axtinguisher, lets make it easier with that 65% faster weapon switch.
- Reserve Shooter does 35% more damage on airborne targets, and gives you a 15% weapon switch speed.
- Scorch Shot has a larger radius to set people on fire with the explosion, because hitting people with the flaregun was too hard before.
- Detonator gives the pyro flarejumps just because.
- Phlogistinator gives you back full health and gives you crits
- Powerjack gives you a 15% movement speed increase regardless of health, and gives you 75+ health. Stack that 65% faster weapon switch on there too.
Does anyone actually remember when pyro was an ambushing class? Because back then you actually had to think to play it.

Pyro is a dumb class and I main it because of that. I might as well annoy people while I play the dumb class. Seriously though Pyro is fucking dumb why does it exist.
However, I have more of a problem with snipers being able to one shot me from across the entire map but hey that's just me.

Most competitive TF2 players use the Apple Lisa Pointing Device as it was the most precise mouse on the market when they got their computer. However it only has one mouse button, and so it is clear to them that pyro players skilfully airblasting them are exploiting advanced technologies.

Airblast is annoying but Pyro kinda needs it to be useful.

Yet pyro is only viable in very limited situations in 6v6 (i.e. holding last with an uber disadvantage) and is far from the most important class in HL. If pyro is so overpowered, why is it not very useful in the vast majority of competitive play?
Pyros are limited to what they can do.Yes pyro has some really good unlocks but look at scout, double jump, fastest speed, sodapopper gives you minicrits because you walked/jumped around a little bit, bonk lets you get behind the enemy or escape really really easily, atomizer lets you jum three times, winger makes you jump higher, etc.
A good scout is way more annoying to deal with then a good pyro imo.

As Ruwin stated in the Interview posted on commft its sustained damage. Pyro is a close range unlock kill fest, but in a comp setting you can very rarely get into the range it takes to be effective. So it is knocked down to an off class for last to stop ubers or pick up a few quick kills, but a pyro pushing out is rarely as useful as a scout or roamer due to mids and seconds being too large and they can't get in and do the stupid unlock bullshit.

I agree with a great amount of your post. Lets go back to the days when you got +50 health and free crits being behind somebody.
Those were the days.
On a side note, half of pyro unlocks are shit. The other half are overpowered. like beyond degreaser, flare, powerjack and axtinguisher, you're wasting your time with an unlock.

I think making the airblast blast you not as far at max range and blast you the full distance at close range would be a neat change for the Pyro. If you get that close you should be rewarded with the obnoxious airblast but not if you're really far away.
With that said I do feel like Pyro is one of the weaker classes in the game. I think with a few changes he could become stronger but also have a higher skill ceiling, but with all the mini-crit stuff it seems like it'd take a lot of reworking.

This is pretty much it, being able to control your opponent's movement in an fps is pretty bullshit. They nerfed it by fixing groundstalling, but the fact that a pyro can not only change your direction and remove momentum, but also make airstrafing less effective for a period of time is pretty dumb, especially because of how fast it fires.

Like PowerofToaster said, just make the airblast "force" add to whatever momentum the target already has instead of removing all forces and then applying the airblast force. Pyro would still be able to block doorways and stuff with airblast, but he wouldn't be able to airblast a soldier flying at 100 mph and make him float in the air just the same as airblasting a stationary target.
KickSnareHatwow by this thread you'd think that pyro mains would be helping to win ESEA 6s matches left and right and out-fragging their entire highlander teams
but wait
every stupid thing about pyro discussed in this thread considers encountering a pyro in a 1v1 situation. in a team fight, they have barely any use at all since they're only useful in ambushes. as we all know, 1v1s should be avoided in 6s. pyro ambushes would work once or twice in 6s by sneaking through some flank until in a close enough position to m1 like a motherfucker, and yet, as we all know too, flank is a concept that should always be watched so it's unlikely that a pyro could sneak through without a roamer and two scouts trying to stop him
a pocket pyro on the other hand might be somewhat viable according to grape's post in another thread

Compression blast mechanics. Momentum-cancelling is really dirty at close range, especially since that's the time when you need all your movement to be spot-on.
I guess people hate Pyro because it's broken in a way that makes it not fun to play against.

for everybody saying the skill ceiling is low for pyro, i would think it is just as high as soldier when utilizing airblast. the reason for this, is imo it is harder to reflect a rocket accurately back at a soldier, than it is to shoot a rocket as a soldier, at any other class. if both solly and pyro are using shotty as the secondary, the skill ceiling is equal in terms of learning how to use just the shotty.
however if you dont use airblast and just w+m1 with backburner, the skill ceiling is much lower. airblasting makes pyro a lot of fun, and lets you POTENTIALLY have all the movement abilities of a soldier, assuming a soldier will shoot a few rockets at you every once in awhile. theoretically a pyro should be able to win a 1v1 against a soldier 100% of the time, maybe a bit less if the fight turns into a straight shotty vs shotty situation, since solly has 25 more health

The best thing about pyro is surfing an attempted corner airblast while also shotgunning them to death.
It fills me with a sense of smug TF2 satisfaction.

I really have no problem playing against pyros but maybe that's because in EU we don't allow them to use Axtinguisher, Flare gun, Degreaser etc, which is what a lot of you are complaining about. The airblast is just something you have to account for when you're facing a pyro, you know it's coming just don't fire projectiles.
