if you dont say no to someone they wont feel unhappy

its not a realistic move for a local byoc gaming festival or hwatever u consider to move or add locations. there are many moving parts and giant risk for something that is clearly already working for them.

I've been suggesting an international LAN here in NA since before i46. It doesn't have to be one of the Multiplay LANs...

TheFragile and I both work with the GXL, which has been around for a long time. It is one of the most successful NA LANs. They have the venue, they have all the networking gear, servers, tables, chairs... Almost everything we would need. We would need to get PCs for people to compete on, since traveling from another country WITH your rig isn't gonna happen, but there are ways we can get the PCs.

Now I'm obviously not suggesting that this go down in October at the next GXL, this would require a LOT of planning. Ill talk to the main guy tho this weekend and run it by him.

PAX is also another option. PAX is a huge convention that hosts a big LAN. We could try to work something out with them as well and make a huge spectacle out of it. That one is a long shot, but the GXL is very, very possible.

Also, just to be clear... By suggesting we do a LAN here I'm in no way saying we shouldn't continue to do the euro LANs. I'm saying we do this in addition to the euro LANs.

Get the biggest LAN you can somewhere in NA, persuade the top teams to attend, persuade a large portion of the community to attend.

In particular getting communities to attend is important, at i-series the big ones from EU like TC, Nervous Energy, Clanda, Kritzkast, UKCS all attend, these being mostly UK based communities but an impressive amount of non-UK people still come.

But also what is recognisable is the amount of players from the Prem/Div 1 level that come, from ETF2L S15:

Team Epsilon, Broder/TCM/Infused attended with their full lineups, SOLAR attended with all except Medic, had their old Medic there. Majority of RLM's S15 lineup attended with different teams, 2 guys from LMS came (the non-Russians). Then in Division One, Half of Reverto came, half of my team, Furbo Pandas came, Did I stutter had most their team come, Least one guy came from every team, in the end you've got like 40-50 current top players from Europe in attendance, mixed in with some ex-greats of past times gone by, it's more than enough talent to create several good teams and a lot of these people travel from around Europe as well.

To relate this to North America, if you held a LAN somewhere fairly central with good transport links, I can't really comment but around the East Coast and got most of the community from that area to attend, then try to get least half of all your top players there and still get your top teams like HRG, Mix^, AG...etc then you'll have a heck of a big community LAN with great players in attendance. I think the sheer size of the US would affect it a lot, UK one of the most Western parts of Europe so we don't get too many Eastern EU people come, if the NA community were to do the same then parts of the US would be neglected, but it's really about getting as many people there as possible.

The "biggest" LANs in NA I guess would technically be the intel backed "LANfest" ones, but they don't really cater to competitive gaming. GXL is very supportive of competitive gaming, it's east coast (40 mins from Philadelphia International Airport). Close enough to some of the major east coast landmarks that people may want to visit while they are here (Philly, NYC, Washington DC, etc...)

At previous GXL LANs we have had lots of top players fly in to compete. I'm sure for a major event like this could potentially be that a ton of teams would attend.

There are also a lot of comp players local to this area who I'm sure would help people get around and stuff.

I'm really gonna start working on this.

esea is starting euro tf2 open division. If there is enough popularity they will more than likely add an invite division like they did csgo.

ETS is the biggest lan outside of esea that hosts tf2.

ETS is big, and popular, but correct me if I'm wrong (I haven't been to ETS yet) but isn't the TF2 event there an unofficial one? Also, do we even have someone with connections to the heads of ETS?

I just suggested GXL since they are big, constantly have TF2 as a pro-series tournament, and we personally know the guy who runs it. From what I hear ETS is pretty awesome too so I'm not putting them down, we should look at all possibilities

We had an official one for ETS 2013, but we didn't get enough entrants so no money prizes were given out.

The problem with ESEA LAN is that we're probably going to have to fund for all four teams to go, so about $40,000. I don't know if we can do that 3 times a year. Only one CSGO EU team went to LAN this time.

So then, does it make more sense for each scene to focus on getting their regional LAN of choice built up well and working. Then work towards a unified ruleset and ultimately, getting a World Championship tournament a la The International?

none of the na lans with tf2 have prize pools decent enough to at least help put a dent in travel costs

that depends on the sponsors we get for the event. we could also maybe do a donation drive for prize money.

Biggest LAN in NA is QuakeCon early every August. But I don't think that'd count, we wouldn't be able to get a TF2 tourney going probably.
