The fact that's he's already in the hospital and being treated is a good sign. The mortality rate is very low when treated. I hope everything works out!

I think it's called Deep Vein Thrombosis - and if it reaches the heart unchecked then it can cause severe breathing problems or death if untreated. It sounds like you guys got to it pretty quickly. Treatments range from medication to surgery - and there's even a chance it heals itself.
Most DVT patients are rushed to an emergency room - as your brother was.

My dad had a DVT clot thrown to his pulmonary artery late last year - he was in the hospital over Christmas. Lucky to be alive, since a clot thrown to the heart would have killed him. If your brother's in the hospital, there's pretty much no chance he'll die of this, but he may be stuck in the hospital for quite a while while he recovers, and then he might have to be on blood thinners for a month or two. My condolences, hope everything works out alright!

A CT scan (you really gotta try it, it's freaking rad - you become the Human Torch for fifteen seconds) revealed it was a blood clot in my lungs, courtesy of another treatment I had going involving prolonged steroid use.
Anyway, they put me on blood thinners for a while, and I suspect your brother will get the same treatment. Initially, they need to get it working in you quickly, so I got to self-inject one subcutaneous syringe a day for about a week. Basically you grab your belly fat (if you're really fit, you'll have to do the upper thigh - nurses won't let you Rambo-style it) and inject there. Then they start the pills: Warfarin/Coumatin is what you take daily. The drug is cheap and the side effects (you bruise easily) are very minimal, according to the pharmacist, just don't go and get in a situation where you're going to bleed heavily, for obvious reasons. Every so often you'll go for an INR test, where they test how thin your blood is and adjust your blood thinner dose accordingly. Depending on your condition, you'll want a different reading. If it's too high, they'll give you vitamin K to thicken your blood, which for me came in the form of vitamin K-spiked orange juice. It's important to take the pills at the same time every day, especially before the INR test day or it'll skew the results a bit.

He was complaining if legs cramps in his calf, my mom took him to the doctor and they said it could be an infection or a clot, and to go to the hospital. My mom took him there and he collapsed the moment he went in he doors. A police officer came and told my mom she needed to come inside. He died an hour later. I called my dad and he made it from massachusettes to PA in 3 hours, normally takes 6.

All I'm going to say is that everyone should learn the symptoms of blood clots and other life threatening medical conditions and contact a medical professional if they experience any symptoms. I'm no medical professional, but I've had several family members who have been lucky enough to survive blood clots and other medical emergencies because they saw a doctor when experiencing the most subtle of symptoms. Your brother will definitely be in my prayers.
