CMStorm Rapid TKL, Ducky TKL, etc should all be in the 100$ range.

I came across that one with the browns before, and was kind of scared off by the review on it. I read some issues with the keyboard other places too. It's a gorgeous keyboard though.

has anyone tried Zalman ZM-K500? Dirt cheap, and could be decent for the price

Anybody know if there is a mechanical keyboard that fits the following constraints:

-Noise is a pretty serious concern (I'm thinking browns with o-rings or pads?)
-I code about 3x as much as I game, so typing accuracy and comfort takes priority
-Maximum of around $150, but I could go more or less if there's a compelling reason
-10keyless since I always smash my mouse into the right side of my current keyboard
-Solid build quality and good warranty
-Media keys would be nice to have but not totally necessary

i think you might be interested in a board which has Topre switches, Kuni. but if those boards/switches sound too expensive to you, or just don't sound like 'your thing', then there are still plenty of options available with cherry switches.

topre switches are expensive, but considered to be great for long typing sessions. they are mechanical switches, but have a rubber dome in them. the rubber dome in them give a tactile feeling and also make the switches very silent. many users say they are the least fatiguing switches they've ever used.

this clip on youtube was made to demonstrate the sound of a realforce keyboard (using topre switches).

there are also keyboards (that use topre switches) which are even smaller than TKL (for example the Leopold FC660C, HHKB Pro 2 and HHKB Lite).

you probably want a keyboard with plate-mounted switches (i believe topre switches are always plate-mounted), as that makes boards alot more sturdy and adds alot to overall build quality, but it does make boards more expensive. what you also might want to know about plate-mounted switches is that it will take alot more effort to open up the switches themselves (in case you ever want to change the springs in them or apply lube).

edit: it's probably the easiest to just make a thread on geekhack. there are alot of coders there who have alot of experience with keyboards. most there actually love keyboards and sincerely like to help other people purchase one. it might be handy to go for a title like 'coder looking for new keyboard' to get the attention of the 'right' people even quicker ;p

I use my computer peripherals a ton, so I'm not fazed by spending a bit extra up front to get the keyboard best suited to my needs. I'll probably start looking into keyboards with topre switches and see if there's one that suits me.

Are reds or browns better? My blues are too loud. I tried getting a Tartarus (the tier above Nostromo) but my hand was too long for it even when the device was fully extended so I returned it.

neither are necessarily better, but most would say that linear switches (like reds) are superior for gaming.

in terms of loudness, reds and browns do not really differ.
what makes an audible difference is using o-rings or landing pads (so i'd suggest you look into them if sound is a concern).
also: pcb-mounted switches make less noise than plate-mounted switches, so you could also take that into account when looking for a new keyboard. boards with pcb-mounted switches are less sturdy (flex a bit easier), but are typically less expensive than boards with plate-mounted switches.

Switched from Razer Blackwidow blues to 710+ brown switches last years. No complaints so far. LCD screen would have been nice like they had in the previous versions but no biggie.

Need a little bit of help. Looking for a 10 keyless keyboard, kind of like noppoo(would go with it but I heard bad reviews) Where there isn't space between areas to save space. I have a small desk so space is key. If possible keep below $100. Thanks

I just got the 8-switch version of this (unfortunately it's sold out now) and it's super useful for helping determine what kind of switch you want in your next keyboard without having to go and try 4-8 different keyboards. Plus, it doubles as a cool-looking desk toy.
