As a storage drive it's fine.
If you're looking for performance, I would save for the Black.

It'll be fine. If you're using it as a storage drive I'd actually reccommend the green anyways, but the black is better for OS/programs. The green will also work for that though, just a bit slower.

I'd recommend buying a good SSD for OS/GAMES and important files, and just buy the cheapest 1 or 2TB hardrive you can get for the rest of your files you download (movies, not important games)

I have a WD Green drive that I bought accidentally for my primary drive. If you don't mind a 4-8 minute startup time when you've got a few years worth of stuff on the drive, it's fine.

I'd recommend waiting for money for a better drive.

My seagate is working fine, so go bitch somewhere else, it doesn't matter what drive you have really, because it isn't going to contain important files.

I haven't had any good experiences with Seagate, but that's whatever.

How much space do you need? There are nice 1TB WD blue drives that are just as speedy as their black counterparts.

single platter and cool & quiet.

Try to look into the blue for a mix of performance / price ratio.

I just bought a 1tb WD blue yesterday for $50 at Microcenter. Works pretty good.

Somewhat off-topic, but regarding Seagate...

I've got 2 x 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD's which I use for a combination of games (besides the most played; LoL and TF2), (some) applications and mostly storage. One the said drives I've had for 2 + years without fault and I recently purchased the second. So far, I'm yet to have any issues.

Is there anything in particular that people have problems with when it comes to Seagate drives? Something I should look out for as 'warning signs'? Or is it just a general lack of read/write speed in comparison with WD drives?

there are no problems with seagate drives, the only recent one was the 7200.11 firmware issue. seagate drives are fine, and honestly i regret spending so much money on my caviar black

I don't get the whole fuss about seagate drives either, mine have always been working fine as well :P

Take it as you will. You may or may not be able to extrapolate this across all products, but this is more empirical evidence than anyone else has on the issue.

I've been using a WD Green drive for about 5 years with no issue, but do keep in mind that the drive is slow. WD doesn't advertise it, but it's a 5900 RPM drive and you might notice it. It's a good, reliable drive and if you don't think the speed will be an issue (and are more concerned with price) it's a great deal.

I went out to grab a new harddrive because I actually got tired of the slowness of the drive compared to the other ones in my machine (SSD and a 10K RPM) and I foolishly managed to buy another unlabeled 5900 drive. Apparently WD have sneakily repackaged the WD Green drives in this new arbitrary "Desktop Mainstream" classification, so I bought another 5900 RPM drive without realizing it (and I'll be returning it). However, like I said before, if you just want a good bit of storage for a good price, its not a bad drive. MicroCenter currently has the 3 TB model available for $99.
