Looks like Valve is looking at possibilities for doing a CSGO tournament equivalent to dota's TI.

I watched the whole itnerview and tbh he wasn't saying it as if it was in the works. He was saaying it like everybody already knew, there is a possibility, that's about it.

it's not like valve has some hatred for tf2 players. it would just be a waste of money to have a tf2 international on account of the small turnout it would get

How much money do Valve gain or lose by running The International though? I imagine directly the lose money. The initial prizepot they put out, on top of running the tournament doesn't seem like anything they could make back from the event itself. Unless they are selling some crazy number of tickets, idk what the capacity is of wherever it is.

They most likely run the tournament to keep the game growing, much like half the reason LoL is alive is because Riot continues to run the top level of the game. More people coming to play the game = more ingame revenue. TF2 is no different in that they make their money from in-game purchases.

On top of that, Gabe Newell is literally a billionaire. A billionaire. Valve probably makes a very sizable amount compared to what he is worth, if not more. I understand that you don't just throw money around because you have it, but they could triple the largest prizepot TF2 has ever had and hardly even notice it.

I think the fact 6v6 conflicts with their vision of the game is an obstacle we won't ever overcome and you shouldn't expect to.

tl;dr I'm not an economist so probably don't listen to me

tf2 doesn't need an international, it needs a matchmaking system and some kind of introduction to and recognition of the competitive scene within the game. i would take the latter over an international any day.

To me, it makes more sense to have just one gigantic event with DOTA, CSGO and TF2 there so there isn't as much cost to putting on the tournaments.

May be wishful thinking on my part because I sincerely think a Froyotech/Mixup/Epsilon/iM Round of 4 could steal the show at such an event.

Big sponsors back teams/organizations who play the most popular games with the biggest prizes. Right now that's moba. If valve were to do something like TI for TF2, sponsors would come looking for teams, and more and more players would get involved with the competitive scene.

It won't happen, just sayin' tho...

i think competitive tf2 has gotten enough exposure and just has lack of interest. idk if we'd be able to swing the moba craze over to tf2 with a TI

the problem is they need to rerelease the game for it to be competitive.

I think itll happen, its just a matter of when.

Can you expand on "rerelease"?
If there were a matchmaking feature added and some advertisement it would be quite popular.
People often think comp tf2 is a black sheep, but its actually a very popular scene its just that it doesn't have a sizable playerbase. Its not near as popular as CSGO, but a hell of a lot of people know it exist, and i don't understand your post and how it is not competitive.
I know who you are and respect who you are, but i kind of want you to expand why you believe a complete rerelease needs to happen.

mthsadtf2 doesn't need an international, it needs a matchmaking system and some kind of introduction to and recognition of the competitive scene within the game. i would take the latter over an international any day.

This is very important because you get people interested in a competitive scene by having some place for new players to start out. The only reason I play csgo is because matchmaking is a thing, otherwise I would have been way to shitty to start playing some pug things like esea or w/e.

If you can somehow convince valve to make a matchmaking system in-game so pubbers want to play a comp game, you'd get so many players interested in the scene. That way they can just play whenever, instead of trying to basically organize a team for ugc/etf2l, and go from there when they might not enjoy comp in the first place and they'll just go back to pubs.

The only reason I started playing comp tf2 is because I found out about tf2lobby. It was a place for new players to start playing comp tf2. Now imagine something like that embedded straight into the game like matchmaking is for csgo. You'd get so many pubbers that would be interested in comp and they might like it and keep playing it leading to more players.

Like what mthsad said, you don't need an international, you need a place for new players to instantly have a place to start playing comp.

I think you'd have to be at least moderately delusional to look at Valve's ongoing response (or more appropriately, lack thereof) towards the competitive TF2 scene and imagine them ever throwing us a bone. Even when Sal and eXtine literally went and sat down with the team to discuss the scene, the most that ever came of that discussion were some half-assed pick-ban pugs in yet another attempt to impress their flawed idea of translating pub play into a competitive format. If there ever comes a time when the idea of competitive TF2 is seriously entertained by sponsors, the effort will not be led by Valve.

I think Prog from the Smash community has said it the best: as long as there is a community wanting to play this game out of passion, it will life and eventually we will get recognition from Valve.

We just need to keep doing what we have been doing for the past 7 years and we will have what the other 'e-Sports' games have right now, its just about the fact that we keep playing and keep loving this game in our little circle.
We don't need support from Valve, why do we? We made it this far without any support and just with sheer passion for this game. I've made so many fond memories and friendships over the years and met a lot of interesting people.
We always have something to look forward to: the ESEA LANs, hopefully the CEVO LANs in the future and the Insomnia LANs and while it is true that we don't have as many big entertaining events every month, those STILL are some pretty big gatherings and deliver us some of the best TF2 we have ever seen.

Honestly, I couldn't be more happier about the current state of our game, let's just do what we have been doing for all these years.
