In September I am heading off to university, and I have really no idea what to expect. One thing I am wondering about is internet speed. Does anybody have any experience with residence internet, and if it is fast enough to enjoy playing tf2 still? I will be going to the university of guelph, I doubt anyone here has gone there, but if you have and have experience with the internet, let me know!!
I think it varies a lot, depending on the university... at my university, the speeds were incredible (many times that of my home internet).
even if you don't get much bandwidth, if you're wired in the connection should be really good
some colleges have really good internet, mostly those located in urban areas or large universities. Small rural colleges can be really shitty though.
smoboeven if you don't get much bandwidth, if you're wired in the connection should be really good
I had 9up/9down at school which I think was pretty alright, but my connection was so damn spotty I sometimes wouldn't be able to play for a month straight. In a way bigger Canadian city than Guelph.
I don't think anyone can tell you what you will get, you're just gonna have to wait and see for yourself.

@ UCLA, I got gigabit down like 250+Mb upload, but it was "shaky" (fluctuates the max speed). Pretty fucking good, I played lol back then and got <10 ping. Torrent in seconds with good seeding.
The internet I had in northern Idaho had shitty download speeds (1-2 mbps), but my ping was always stable on a wired connection.

I would disagree with this.. I went to college at Niagara and every room was "wired". Problem was the bandwidth was spread way too thin for each user, and long story short Steam/PC gaming/XBL was absolutely a no-go in residence unless it was a holiday and people were gone. It was ridiculous.
Certainly I'm sure a lot of residences have okay enough internet, but not all. Contact people at the school who have experienced it, if possible.

when i moved to uni I got 100 Mbps down and 100 Mbps up. My ping to everywhere was also about 33% of what my ping was from my home 45 miles away
I had like 10 down/4 up in dorms at waterloo. You should have enough to play tf2.
A lot of colleges throttle your internet and give you sorta shitty download speeds, but most of the time you should have consistent ping. I know when I moved to uni that was only an hour away from my home I went from 20mbs DL at my home to 10mbs, but my ping pretty much was halved on most servers.
my uni literally got 300mbit down and 200something up. Some ridiculously high speed. Worst case scenario I would only get 250mbit down from my dorm. Never had any ping issues. They are also upgrading their network again this semester. There is also 0 throttling/bandwidth limiting; I have literally dl'd over 70GB in a day.
Basically my college's net is a best case scenario speed wise. Some unis only allow 2GB/day here LOL
tldr: good luck

65 down / 50 up at Penn State. The only limitation was they limited 10gb of bandwith for both up and down every week.
Brother has gigabit up and down at San Luis Obispo; the benefits of going to school on top of an internet node.
I went to UCI and had 10 MB up and down, even at the off campus housing.

Thanks, I'm hoping that I would have something similar to this since its only like 30mins away...

How's UCI as a school? I've been looking at it for my major, just wanted to see how it is in your opinion. And Mesa court or middle earth?

I didn't really join any clubs/groups or go out much, so I can't really comment on that side of things.
Any major in particular? I graduated with a BS in Comp Sci., it's nothing like the CS courses my brother takes at SLO. Lot's of bio people though.
Mesa Court is a bit away from pretty much every classroom, but if you need open space, it has it in spades. Several of the dorms even have a piano, though its usually out of tune. Not sure how the cafeteria is now, but 4 years ago the entrees were meh, but the breakfasts were the best (waffles/omelettes/etc freshly made).
Middle Earth is right off of Ring Road, which is basically at the middle of the campus, so you have easy access to your room and classroom. Downsides are less space and more noise. Food at ME is definitely better than MC though.
Regarding the cafeterias, you're not locked to your location. You can take your meal card, walk to ME from MC and swipe in there to eat if you're inclined.
Oh yeah, don't torrent. While the IT dudes don't care, they have guidelines they need to follow. I BELIEVE you can get a mobile torrent client, walk it to the library and get it there though. Don't quote me on that though. Bringing your own wifi router is also against policy, but again, they don't really care. The sticklers will probably ask you to remove it though.

dont UCs have crazy bandwidth restrictions
I was hesitant as fuck to do anything related to UC housing cause I read shit like '10 gigs a week' or some shit rofl

hmm never heard of anything like that at UCSD but the school got pretty anal about torrenting since DMCA complaints get sent to them. vpn's and private trackers should let people torrent at any school though
and speeds on-campus were awesome, I miss living on campus

Pretty sure 1 month I downloaded 50 gigs no problem (like free student MSDN alone is 10 gigs). Only thing is if you blatantly torrent movies you can get your internet revoked (never heard of anyone getting caught, but they say they've done it). I think they do throttle you if you use 100MB/s for a decent amount of time (my first 10 seconds seemed to always be faster than the next few minutes) but there's no way it would every really matter since a 3 gig file downloads in a minute or two.
At the very least, UCLA has no bandwidth cap. Also I'm surprised that UCI internet is considered good. I remember my friends always dropping when playing league from there, but I guess its gotten better.

I had the 10mb up and down at UCSC like KL did at UCI. My ping was amazing to every server, and there definitely wasn't any data cap.

At WPI I get 200-400down/200-300 up. Good enough to host a server if you're so inclined.
Capped at 10 GB/day and 50/week.
So yeah it varies from school to school.
