hey there.
so recently when playing tf2 i've been getting some frame drops, though it's not showing.
cl_showfps and net_graph 1 both are showing constant 144fps, but in-game there is extreme choppiness. however, the game just decides to be smooth and run normally sometimes.
i'm only using 20% of my cpu and only 6gb of my 16gb of ram and with my old computer i used to run tf2 and chrome open fine without frame drops.
sorry i don't have any more information, but it's really all i know. i've tried reinstalling, clearing cache, turning it off and on again, and updating gfx card settings. does anyone else have this problem or knows how to fix it? thank you.

Make sure your mat_queue_mode isnt 0. That can cause weird fps drops.
-1 = default
2 = multithread
I assume this would have been fixed with a reinstall though

I fixed my mouselagg and choppiness on my laptop by putting mat_queue_mode 0 . Its reduces fps a bit but it still feels waaay smoother. I dont know why and how it works, but it did.

Source engine is weird. The formula for fps cap is (RefreshRate * 2) + 1, not just RefreshRate + 1.
Use fps_max 289 and get back to us. Also try uncapped.

I have the same issue as OP and I do have an AMD card. Are they prone to this?

From my experience AMD cards have this micro stutter problem. I get 300fps and sometimes it will just micro stutter for no reason at all. The only way to fix this is to restart your computer and even then it might not help.
Do you havea 7xxx series gpu?

Nope. 6670. I've noticed the same thing though, and it isn't easily reproducible.

I used to get this whenever I switched from fullscreen to windowed. Try using fullscreen & disabling aero.

Yeah the older amd cards are more prone to this problem. Even in other games I would turn on the fps counter and I'm shocked when it's 120fps+ but it feels so much lower.
I was going to buy a 120hz monitor but after seeing a lot of people complain of it not feeling like 120hz, I'm really hesitant.

I've got a 7850 and I've not had this problem at all, I'm even running two monitors off of it (One at 144hz) and my fps in tf2 and other games is fine. The only times I get micro stutter is when steam dies and it signs me out and back in or w/e it does.
Edit: When I had one monitor running off of my gpu and one off of the onboard graphics any animations on the on board would destroy my fps. On board was the 60hz monitor the gpu was 144, you didn't say if you have one or two monitors but if you do I'd check that.

Maybe it affects older AMD cards, I have a Radeon R9 270X and have no problems with micro-stutter.
I did have a stuttering problem with my old GPU when it was overheating, I would check temps and maybe let memtest86+ run overnight to eliminate as many variables as possible.

Yeah, I have r7 but I never micro stutter. It could be overheating for you.

Do you have 2 Monitors?
I have a similar problem where my game feels like it's running at 60hz instead of 120.
Though it only happens on windows 8 and also only if the game is running in windowed mode.
As long as my second monitor is not showing any animations my game runs fine, but as soon as I watch a stream or something else, it drops down to 60Hz.

To chime in to others reporting a similar issue.
7970 running a 120hz VG248QE and some other 60hz monitor.
When I was running the 120hz monitor off dual link DVI it would sometimes feel as though the refresh rate was at 20hz rather than 120hz, never could figure out exactly why, although if I disabled the second monitor it went away instantly. Since switching to DisplayPort I haven't seen it but that's no guarantee it's completely fixed.

HD5850 and 120hz, no stutters only noticable stuff when my fps drops and sometimes in path of exile but a restart of the game fixes it.

I have a HD7850 and times when my game stutters are...
- Foobar2k playing music
- Having a Web Browser open
- Using TF2's fps_max cvar (I use RivaTunerStaticsServer which is included with MSI afterburner. RadeonPro could only limit to 120hz)
- Couple servers that stutter all the time (TN mge, FP's Phoenix mge)

ps, make sure you don't have windows cache disk writes for like 5+ disks because it will eat through your free ram

Alright, reporting in 4 days later. Sorry for the late responses.
It seems disabling Aero stopped the frame drops, however this has only started recently and it's kind of irritating that I have to do this now to stop frame drops.
etherYou wouldn't happen to own a AMD card?
I have an AMD Radeon 7570 (really low end card), never had this problem when I had my old, shitty Nvidia card, though.
genericMumble overlay caused this for me
With or without overlay on I had this problem, which was odd.
Thank you all for the help!

I'm on a HD7850 and I also have these awful framedrops since a few days ago. Plenty of ram left, no excessivly high temps yet I have been suffering from stutter/framedrops since last week.

Has there ever been a fix for this? I have a 7850. My fps never dips below 60 but I'm feeling some extreme choppiness at random times when I'm moving my mouse. Seems pretty random but it doesn't usually happen immediately after starting TF2. Easily replicable on tr_walkway by letting the bots run for a few minutes. I've tried updating graphics drivers, changing mat_queue_mode, disabling aero, setting a max fps but nothing really helps.

probably your CPU overheating and throttling itself down to normal temps

Yeah as #26 said it sounds like your CPU is either overheating or simply not good enough to run the game anymore, I've got a 7850 too and I haven't had any problems like that.
