downpourdepressing music is awesome though
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8sLcvWG1M4
this is beautifully depressing, not metal though unfortunately.
Regarding Opeth, I haven't listened to much of their newer stuff so I guess I wouldn't know. Wilson's recent solo stuff is brilliant though.

only metal ive been listening to recently is this album:

i like it a lot, although the instrumental breaks are way better than the parts with lyrics IMO

i prefer more of the post-rock "heaviness" like This Will Destroy You, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, etc.

probably not what you meant but these bands can get just as heavy as metal.
p.s. this will destroy you is coming out with a new album in like a month

heavy music? you mean like this?

Stuff OP linked is the kinda shit "hardcore" kids with neck tattoos and ear stretchers listen to because its \m/. Blackgaze is pretty cool, but you can't go wrong with classics like Slayer, Bathory, Burzum, Emperor, Mayhem, Ulver etc.

Some of the new hipster black metal is alright too, stuff like deafheaven. Kinda blending together post-rock, bm and shoegaze. e.g.

metal is really expansive & varied and to pass judgment on it because you don't like one particular aspect is pretty silly
I'm sure almost everyone could find something they really enjoy hearing in the various subgenres
edit: also mbv owns what the heck
for people in this thread who are saying they like shoegazey / post rock stuff, this really turned me on to exploring a lot more metal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-kW-rxzJ_0
another one of my favorites, this one has no harsh vocals if that turns you off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTM9x-fEMwo

ShiftaTeapot_Steven Wilson is great, what are you on about?
nothing wrong with him or his music, but his influence on Opeth was not for the best
FWIW i saw opeth around 2003, had a chance to meet with mikael and when he talked about porcupine tree being one of the bigger influences for opeth he made it pretty clear that he was a fan of steve's band since they formed in the 90s, opeth has been experimenting with these new albums while i respect and love their work i'm not a huge fan of them anymore.
i haven't listened to them in quite some time since i lost interest after the album deliverance. still a great band but their new sound isn't really for me. when i did see them i was blown away, they really know how to put on a show. mikael also mentioned that most of the songs are 'strictly' studio songs, i asked him out right why he never plays "by the pain i see in others" and he simply responded its too hard to play live, and i can see that. i only asked because its one of my favorite tracks from them hands down

I really liked it, are there any other similar tracks/albums?

nice list xen, cant go wrong with death, dark tranquility and warbringer. i love morbid angel up until their last album which was the biggest embarrassment in metal history. i was contemplating going to summer slaughter but i think they could've got a better headliner i ducked out with the fear of morbid angel playing a single track from their last album. i kind of regret skipping out on dying fetus, origin and decrepit birth but oh well
