Just because the domain isn't being used doesn't mean that it isn't registered.
Both tf2.tv and tf.tv are registered:
http://www.checkdomain.com/cgi-bin/checkdomain.pl?domain=tf.tv

You could probably get them by filing a certain type of lawsuit because they're not being used and get them, but seriously just type out teamfortress.tv.
