The Kickstarter campaign to fund development of the FPS game Reflex, developed by Turbo Pixel, is now up and running. While not only providing would-be backers and deathmatch fans with a quite a bit of standard information about the upcoming game, the page lists some very interesting previously-unreleased hints about gamemodes, match making and customization features.
In addition, the project is providing some very intriguing pledge reward tiers, ranging from a copy of the game to custom player and weapon models of your choice. Head over to the Reflex Kickstarter page now, and help the project reach it's goal.

So it's essentially quake live 2?
So it's essentially quake live 2?
Just gonna say I'm just a fan who wants to see the kickstarter and the game succeed. I don't have the intimate knowledge to answer tough questions. You're better off going to the reflex irc (#reflex on irc.quakenet.org) to talk to newborn directly.
AloSechttp://teamfortress.tv/thread/14756/reflex-arena-shooter-in-development
I thought I'd still post since my post is more relevant to the kickstarter than trying to encourage discussion about the game in general. The kickstarter needs exposure and I thought that a new thread advertising it would draw more attention and backers than some posts in the old thread.
raikuSo it's essentially quake live 2?
The game does look fairly similar to CPM at the moment, but the VQ3(QL) ruleset will not be present in Reflex.
Newborn has said that the game will be less similar to CPM as development progresses.
Plus there are alot of new features planned for Reflex that are absent in Quake Live.

So many new arena shooters I hope at least one takes off

Been keeping my eye on this game for a long time, out of the whole bunch of arena shooters in development this is by far the most promising. It's quite astonishing how far they've gotten with 3 part-time developers, and they still manage to stay very active talking with the community on for example reddit and IRC. If you have questions that aren't otherwise easily answered I highly recommend people jumping into the #reflex irc on quakenet.
I really really hope this takes off personally. I love the cpma gameplay and an evolution of that in a modern package with matchmaking and all that stuff sounds amazing.

Just pledged for the prototype. If they don't hit their goal, I hope they make the prototype purchaseable somehow.

Just because its an arena shooter doesn't automatically make it quake.

To be fair a lot of the weapons shown, and maps shown are very similar to already existing quake maps/weapons. Plus it looked like the sidestrafing system was basically the same as QL.

the fundamentals of gameplay are CPM, not QL - there is a massive difference. it's almost like comparing TFC and TF2 because they have the same weapons. they play completely differently, and I'm willing to bet that most tf2 players would probably enjoy CPM much much more than the molasses gameplay of QL.
they are starting from the base fundamental gameplay of CPM which is incredibly solid and it looks like the deviations they've made so far are really strong
I have a lot of faith in this game actually, especially in comparison to the failed attempts of the past (xonotic and warsow to name a couple)

CPM is more dynamic in terms of movement and game flow, QL makes it easier for smart players to outdo DM players. That said I prefer CPM a lot because despite being more of a smart player than a DM player, the flow of the game is just more entertaining subjectively, because of the specific aspects of DM that it rewards (and the superior tiered armor system).

For a quick intro as to why CPM is infinitely more entertaining than QL, check this out.

edit: also, finally pledged! gonna need to get in there to make this game as soon as we can get it

The devs are great, on Zoot's stream they were making a map and answering questions. It looks amazing and the devs are really passionate about the future of arena fps games

With only ~20% raised in two thirds of the time allotted, the Kickstarter campaign is expected to fall through; the game will be released on Early Access instead, since it got through Greenlight.
Too bad I don't have the kind of money with which I could buy an alpha of an unproven arena shooter just like that. Good thing my support doesn't make or break the game's success, because I really hope it succeeds.

Hey there,
i love the competitive aspect this game has. Its basically an upgraded Quake Live.
We'll probably be including this in the eSource Tournaments.
Thanks for making such a great game.

Probably can't read it but basically they decided to pull the plug on kickstarter and are going to be doing steam early access in the next few months.

they very clearly aren't going to get $280,000 in whatever time is left. i honestly don't know what they were thinking asking for $360k, I bet they would have got more donations if they had a more realistic number. i didn't pledge because I didn't want to go through the effort for something that isn't going to happen, and i'm sure i'm not the only one.

Well they've said that Reflex is gonna happen, it'll just take longer now. KS was just a way of having a chance to get all the funding they needed quickly, since they pulled the plug they're gonna release it on early access in a few months and go down that route. Should cost ~15 USD apparently.

I really hope this game does well, the only issue I can see happening is that they focus too much on the competitive/e-sports aspect of the game more than anything. CPMA is very hard to get in to as a new player so I feel that may need to do a lot of work from that part as a priority, matchmaking will need to be really good (better than QL I fucking hope), so then it's not players just getting trashed all the time, just like if they played CPMA now. They'd also need to get some good alternative game modes in to keep the majority happy.
My only concern is that this game just becomes a pretty CPMA which will just get stacked from players that move over and it just becomes too top heavy again.

that happened to wildstar, which was supposed to cater to the hardcore MMO audience. the casual community couldn't get into the game and without a substantial population people lost motivation. I feel like Quake realized this too albeit a bit too late.
