this has probably come up before, but why is weapon signing in exchange for keys not a thing? people are willing to pay a lot for weapons signed by their beloved players, so why not make it offical and ask for 1 key or something which goes towards the whole tf2 comp community through prices, i5x tickets and similar stuff?

a lot of players hate signing stuff because it involves having to deal with people and costs time, so why not have a middleman who collects all the items + gift wraps + keys at once and hands them out in bulks to the players for signing.

might not be perfect but a lot better than people asking for signed items and then selling them for a bud or more...

edit: got it guys, bad idea.

seems really greedy lol

when people ask to sign their weapons or cosmetics, i feel like most of them are doing it as fans more than anything else

it takes like 60 seconds for someone to add you, ask to sign something, do the trade, and trade it back

seems really greedy lol

from what ive seen quite a few people have given up on signing stuff because of people reselling them and others not having the needed wrap. it would also be easier accessible for newer players, but yeah i agree, now that i reread it it seems kinda greedy.

I think you may have it wrong as to why a lot of people don't like signing items. Certainly some folks just don't want to do it because it's annoying. But I think there's a group of people who just get such an overwhelming amount of requests that they just don't want to bother with it - people who have to alias and use alts because they're recognized all the time. I think there's another group of people who are just humble and don't understand people wanting them to sign.

Also want to say that a) I agree with Fox that it's greedy, I don't think we need to charge for such a simple thing, regardless of their crazy inflated resell value and b) doing a "middle man" service for signed items just opens up the possibility of people scamming items, stealing, being dishonest, etc.

from b4nny's stream page

Q: Will you sign my weapon?
A: Due to the overwhelming number of invites I receive regarding weapon signing I am currently only signing weapons for subscribers and donators ($2 or more, you must provide the weapon and wrap, please send me a link to your steam profile with your donation).

some people are monetizing their signatures already

also, tons of people don't really like signing for non-monetary reasons, and others will sign everything because they want to be fair and treat everyone with kindness

It does suck a lot to sign something and then see it on the marketplace later. It's pretty easy to search. I don't have a lot of stuff out there anymore because I haven't signed anything for over a year but I used to see it a lot. It's really dumb that someone is making money off of your name for no reason (this coming from someone who aliases as Huey Lewis, but you get the point). In my case, I felt charging people for a digital signature is really scummy too, especially given my relative level of talent, so I just stopped altogether. There really shouldn't be money involved in this at all.

It's also really annoying to have to feel cautious of every friend request because it'd be someone wanting signing most of the time and then I'd get bombarded with messages any time I got on steam, launched a game, or did anything really. Sucks when I just want to get on and play Batman or something.

afaik the reason pure/tlr stopped signing shit was because they kept seeing their signed stuff thrown up on tf2outpost being traded for buds within minutes

im sure not everybody works that way but its a pretty lame consequence

Signing stuff is easy since you can just use trade offers instead of adding people to friends. You can let the trade offers stack up and do them all at once when you get time. So yeah, OP's idea doesn't seem to be a good one and can easily cause some people to get scammed.

Monetizing for your signature is a clever way to make some cash I guess. However, monetizing signatures in hopes that people won't sell them is kinda foolish. It just makes the items worth more to traders since they have a price attached to them.

I don't like signing stuff unless I've interacted with the person in chat/game and they've proven to not be an idiot.

Just to clear some things up:

The whole idea is to encourage players who have given up on signing items because of people reselling their signed items or the sheer number of requests.
By asking for a key or less a "fixed" value for these items is set, which should prevent signed weapons from becoming ridiculously expensive & impossible to obtain for newer players. At the same time players are encouraged to involve themselves in this, as the money could also be used for the next TOTH as an example.
The middleman is supposed to receive all the items and then give them in a bulk to the players for signing. Saves time & resolves the problem of a lot of people wanting their items signed, as the redistribution is done by the middleman. He also could very well be a member of the community who has some time on his hands, to reduce the risk of him scamming.

I do however understand that there are people signing stuff for free, so the whole idea wasnt very good to begin with. Lets just forget about this :)

If all someone wants to do is sell a weapon/hat signed by a specific tf2 celebrity, couldn't they create an alt with the same name, and just sign it with the alt? I mean, is there any way to actually tell which specific steam account it came from?

I think some people already do this, It probably works well in the short term.

Although I liked taggs view on the issue when he was raising money for himself.
Which was monetizing item signings means that theres less profit (and a risk of a loss) of money if the person tries to re-sell the item. Although he was trying to raise money for better internet i think so yeh.

The first time someone asked me to sign something I was flattered, but it got annoying after awhile.
Signing stuff is kind of annoying to me personally because:
-the volume, just takes a really long time, etc
-I don't actually like talking to people. social anxiety, annoying people etc. I usually alias. I would rather not accept random friend reqs (trade links kinda help with this now) because sometimes they spam me to the point where I just wanna play offline, phishers, stalkers, ddosers who add to take your ip from steam calls etc.
-people who just get signatures to sell the stuff (happened to me several times)

Anyways one day some guy wanted me to sign 9 gunboats (clearly so he could sell them) and I raged.
I was going to put something like 'absolutely no weapon signing' like TLR but I decided to just charge 1 key per instead and if they don't want me to sign it fine that works too.

It went quite smoothly, I signed a lot of stuff (more people asked me than before), made a cycle of using keys to level up my steam account > get more friend slots > accept more reqs/sign stuff/acquire keys and repeat and some keys leftover. After awhile I just stopped though, felt kinda greedy. Went back to signing stuff for free (while secretly hating it). but yea it wasn't the worst idea ever so take that for what its worth.

While the idea has its flaws, if it meant for only a couple keys I could get a TLR rocket launcher or Seagull original etc, I'd be totally down.

The unfortunate thing is that people dont sign because some people try to profit on them, but because they dont sign, the people profit more due to the rarity, which really hurts us who want to keep them as fans.

The only reason id consider paying a bud for a TLR rocket launcher is because now that could be the ONLY way I'll get one right? With my ruwin scattergun, a guy was demanding a bud for it, i said no, and lucky for me ruwin started streaming again and signed one for me. I was heavily considering a bud though but wound up getting lucky. In cases like TLR, who knows if he'll ever do signings again, so I might eventually pay it.

ive decided to stop signing items for free all together, it just takes way too long
some of my signing sessions have lasted for 5-7 hours and the demand never goes away
Sure its cool and whatever and i'd like to help but i cant keep spending all day on it and then see people selling the shit for a profit

ive signed hundreds of items for free up to this point and the novelty has worn off for me, too many people want them and I don't have enough time to give them without some incentive

LangeI stopped signing items mostly because it became a hassle. I'd get a few dozen requests a week, and a not-insignificant percentage of them were rude and entitled. It began to felt like a chore that I just didn't want to deal with any longer.

This, also don't get the fascination over wanting something signed, we are nerds not sports stars

A: Due to the overwhelming number of invites I receive regarding weapon signing I am currently only signing weapons for subscribers and donators ($2 or more, you must provide the weapon and wrap, please send me a link to your steam profile with your donation).

some people are monetizing their signatures already

also, tons of people don't really like signing for non-monetary reasons, and others will sign everything because they want to be fair and treat everyone with kindness

well to be fair have you seen some of the invite players pending requests? it's larger than their accepted friends list rofl.
