FogIf the network switch was such a big deal, #tf2mix would be just as dead as #tf2.pug.na
It's not like tf2mix is doing as well as it used to either.

WithADanceNumberI think a lot of people play cs go just to play a different game with their friends. Not because they are switching to a new game. Its a shame that there isn't a more serious version of something like tf2center for high level pugs.
I heard a rumor tf2center was working on something like that. I have no idea how they plan to pull a bunch of higher level players to it though

irc used to be a place to hang out, not just to pug.
the shit talk was real, the scrim finding was real, the admin abuse (cyzer) was real, and it added a closer community feel especially in the days of gotfrag.
its like people are viewing IRC as a 'solution' when in reality it was a community with some added games, private messaging, and the ability to branch out and see other communities and play other games. you used to be able to ql pug, cs pug, esea pug, and tf2pug all at will, while simultaneously talking to your friends and making fake chat logs.

Flame you're just an old man waxing poetic. The IRC move doesn't stop you from idling in multiple channels if you wanted too. You can still hang out in quakenet and geeks IRC. I think what you're missing is your old friends who used to pug and have since moved on. There are still plenty of tf2 players idling in tf2mix at any given time.

idling multiple servers is not something you generally want to do, especially when your friends are on one network and everything else is in another.
if you're trying to argue that it's possible to idle multiple networks then yea sure that's possible, but if you're trying to argue its equally efficient/convenient/desirable to have pugs on the same network as the popular channels of the rest of esports, you're mistaken.
If I'm on geeksIRC just so I can idle #tf2pug or whatever the channel is, its actually a waste and I'd rather resort to tf2center.
If I can be on quakenet or gamesurge and idle 10 channels all filled with people across multiple game scenes and be able to find scrims and get bot updates on matches going on in different games (cs, quake, tf2, sc2) I think its definitely more worth-while.
geeksIRC is a joke.

Whenever this comes up I think people don't know or forget that the sole reason for moving to geeks was that it hides everyone's IP addresses.
Though I do agree that IRC is an archaic way of setting up PUGs - and hopefully what people mentioned about TF2 Center is true. Being able to set up scrims and pick up games through a website would be much more convenient for everyone.

@flame
I agree it's an extra hassle to click a few extra buttons so that I can connect to more than one IRC network. You've reminded me of the great challenge this brings. Thank you so much!

that was sarcasm
I personally don't see the difficulty in it or how it's a 'waste'. However, that's my opinion and I think we see IRC as very different tools. I do understand where you're coming from though; however, times have changed. This community shouldn't be restricted by something as primitive as IRC. At the very lest there should be a frontend for it (ie tf2pickup.net)

@ truktruk, couldnt you do /mode +x to hide your hostname on almost every network?
I'm sure its that way on quakenet and about 95% sure it was liek that on gamesurge.
@dancenumber I dont understand how you can call IRC primitive, twitch is literally IRC chat with a stream window, also not once did I mention it was a 'hassle' or 'too many clicks'... your questionable point of view is quite less compelling when you use unfounded sarcasm and create arguments to counter that never existed.

flame the main reason behind the switch to geeks was people using atf2/proxies to ban evade on both pug na and mix. and being an admin on both networks you had zero control over the matter. the level of frustration can not be described
consolidating back onto one network. it's difficult when say, a gamesurge user gets banned and then aliases -> uses atf2.org (under a proxy or not) to still utilize the tf2mix pug service.
the switch to geeks was in august...and like i said in my previous post pug na was extremely active (I.E multiple pugs at once) once summer is over pugs slowed down in pug na its pretty typical. the main concern also is being able to admin effectively on one network not whether or not other games like cs, quake etc are on another network.
cinq and jodd can shed some light on the admin issue within multiple networks, restrictions/bans were constantly evaded it was crucial to make the switch

while the ban evading was an issue, the tf2mix bot had an issue with gamesurge and multiple IPs connecting to the server. Which sometimes resulted in a g-line ban. Cinq couldn't get the proper support from gamesurge and the eventual plan was to move to quakenet which would provide better support for this issue. The plan was to slowly transition between both servers, having the bot read both irc server channels and properly managing the pugs in both.
Before any of this plan was put into action, Fog decided to move pugna to geeksIRC without talking to Cinq about it.

define crucial.
If I remember correctly the eu pug channel had a legitimacy thing in place where you had to be vouched for.
I think the easiest way to do it was to switch networks, the most efficient way to do it was to update the bot.
People evading IRC bans is as old as time.
I'm not sure I agree the switch was crucial, i understand the reasoning, but I don't believe pugging is dead because of tf2 being on the decline, I think pugging is dead because the drive to use an IRC client (which is actually probably the best way to do it) is not there if its only for one purpose.
Pugging on IRC was never supposed to be a new player infosession anyway. The addition of tf2mix wound up splitting the community anyway, and having more than 1 channel did that again. Then tf2center and lobby came out and the struggle to keep us unified got bigger.
All I'm saying is if people want the old-school style of pug.na or gather.us it needs to be on a larger network, with other games. If you build it, they will come.

it was crucial because it was legit impossible to restrict/ban. ban someone and they can automatically reconnect on a proxy. multiple clients can easily evade bans on those networks and there was no control over it at all
i know you were on a bit of a hiatus since you came back so let me fill you in
The addition of tf2mix wound up splitting the community anyway
it really didn't, tf2mix has players from every division active in it. like i said earlier people that were active in pug na just use mix now think of it has pug na with a different name. tf2 center basically replaced lobbies, tf2center still serves for players that are really new to 6s so its not splitting us its more of a stepping stone, new players in mix come from tf2center/lobbies etc...they start in that and eventually make the jump to play with people who are more experienced.
also like i said earlier as well, in house pugs are active again whether its invite or syops etc...you're not new to this you know a lot of teams have their circle jerks and simply just wanna pug with each other and never really cared for stuff like pug na.
no one is lost on the network switch it was months ago, cinq and all the other admins that ran pugna/mix ultimately made the choice to move networks and now everyone has control over bans/restrictions
even though pug na is inactive now there are still 40 people idle in it and 45 in mix. also pugs have a very small window when they're played i.e late afternoon till about 8ish when people start scrimming. i know it seems like a ton has changed but i can assure you its not that different compared to a while ago

I might take my time later to read all these messages but I will at least answer to the most important questions regarding #tf2mix.
The reason why I chose Quakenet in the first place was to consolidate the TF2 scene to one network. The European scene is already using Quakenet and it seemed like a logical choice. They are the biggest network and have been there since almost forever (one of the oldest). This proves that it would be a safe decision to chose them. The network staff has been very responsive so far and are up to help me out with the HTML IRC PUG client. It's been a lot better than what I got with Gamesurge. Keep in mind, switching to a different network is not a decision I took lightly, it has taken years to acknowledge it would be a better solution for all of us. It's also not a decision I can take on my own, I had to consult every other major TF2 channels owners. The only one who responded positively was enigma from #tf2scrim. Folowed by #tf2.pug.na (Aristolte) with a long time saying "we don't know" from a very late "no. Followed by a quick "no" from the other channels. Keep in mind that all this has been in discussion since a very long time (4-5 months ago).
Now, out of nowhere I start receiving private messages about somebody who is trying to start his own network. Let's say that I am quite hesitant about the whole idea of splitting the whole community to a brand new network that hasn't been proved to be reliable at all. So, I try my best to tell the guy I'm not really interested. Anyway, a month ago I hear about the information that both HL channels are officially moving off Gamesurge to this guy network. I was very surprised since none of the two channel owners from those services came to me to speak about it. Same goes with Fog, I learned about #tf2.pug.na switch from this thread... It's really a big "what the..." for me since none of this "GeeksIRC" thing has been discussed with me and the other channels owners. Which I consider should have been a minimum.
Anyway, if it took me so long to announce anything regarding this it was because I wanted the process to be as smooth as possible but also give all the other channels owner as much time as possible to plan for it. I think I waited an official response from "#tf2.pug.na" for 2 months, to finally receive a "no" at the end. Now they are switching off but to a network I never heard of. Do you guys really know what you want?
Final word, when #tf2mix will officially swicth to a new network we will run on both for a while so we won't force it down your throat while keeping it as stable as possible for everybody. -cinq

You most definitely can do that, but I'm sure the vast majority of people didn't, which resulted in a fair amount of DDoS attacks. I didn't know about it until I magically started losing my internet whenever I streamed.
Pugging isn't dead, it's basically the same as it was a year ago. I don't see what the deal is.

Web pugging was the way to go because IRC is a really annoying hurdle. It's just too bad that no web pug service has a proper chat system like IRC. IRC pugging stayed alive because of the pug community (played since #tf2pug when we pugged gravelpit), back then everybody knew each other pretty well even with over 60 regular puggers. Hell even the gather bot worked until cinq made a better bot with better support. The core IRC puggers are pretty much gone from IRC so it's no surprised nobody else joins up. There's really no incentive to even pug anymore because I barely know anybody and center is garbage level pugs.
I probably should have finished tfqueue though since it'd at least bridge more skill levels instead of lots of invite pugs and barely any mid tier pugs.
Also Cinq did nothing wrong (aside from ban weeble that one time). He carried the pugging community hard.

defytf2 center basically replaced lobbies, tf2center still serves for players that are really new to 6s so its not splitting us its more of a stepping stone, new players in mix come from tf2center/lobbies etc...they start in that and eventually make the jump to play with people who are more experienced.
Honestly this probably doesn't happen that often. TF2center 6s is a shitshow. People don't go into mumble, and off-classing lobby stomping is rampant. If that's your first time playing 6s you won't go "wow, that could have been fun if I was better" you'll say "these people are assholes and their game is stupid." When I started I had to start in TF2lobby and the only reason I stayed is because I had already been watching a lot of 6s and I was curious where I could play a game that didn't devolve into demos off-classing to huntsman sniper.
The only benefit to TF2center 6s is ease of use, or in rare cases people using it to set up their own inhouse games. Beyond that it probably does more harm than good for growth of the 6s community.
The best place to start is probably inhouse pugs. People there tend to all be on the same page and fixing/kicking a problem player is pretty easy. It retains the picking system so teams hopefully are balanced and it keeps the envornment friendly which you need to retain a new player. From there you should probably have a decent time, even if you suck. From there you should jup to tf2mix or scrims/low-level team play.

tf2center is very casual, you can't really call a tf2center game a pickup, even if it has mumble required. I messaged lamqta about this asking what the current status on the NA tf2pickup.net is. I think this is what you guys really need, also we support HL, BBall and ultiduo pickups which Im sure you would like as well

Hello everybody! I am really sorry to hear that the irc pugs are not going as they should. But i have another idea in mind that someone of you might be interested in. TF2Pickup.net is website for 6s,hl,ultiduo and bball pickups and its working..fine so far. We have some problems with balancing but doing our best to fix them when our coders have the time. We've been thinking about expanding the website to the NA scene aswell because many USA players have been interested in playing our website, but unfortunatelly its only for EU at the moment. Also our coders do not have the time to make it, so few months ago we decided to start looking for new coders/devs who would like to join our team and start developing the pickup so we can expand it, but i have posted that only in ETF2L(where the main audience is from europe(logic, right...)). But Kaneco told me about the problem here and we are also interested if somebody from the NA community is interested in helping us and making it work for na players. SimRai are offering servers with location chicago and new york so the gameservers should not be a problem.
Here is the original post from Kuferl about it: http://etf2l.org/forum/community/topic-23781/page-73/#post-506700
Please anyone who is interested in helping us, contact me, kuferl or wiethoofd on steam! :) Thanks in advance.

Please anyone who is interested in helping us, contact me, kuferl or wiethoofd on steam! :) Thanks in advance.
flatlineif NA gets a tf2pickup i will never play anything else ever
is it just servers? i'm pretty sure tragic would be happy to provide if you just need servers
As lamqta said the problem we have atm is with devs, our current devs currently have other priorities and dont have as much time as they want, so we would need some devs familiar with the NA scene and able to adapt the site to your scene, shouldn't be too hard because the backend/entire site structure is already there for the EU pickups.

just off the top of my head, maybe thesupremecommander (tsc) or lange (even though he's apparently out of the scene?)
idk though, tsc works on statusspec and lange is swamped with nodecg right now
