XtheDuckAre you sure you want 12 y/o kids to be known in TF2 as Youthful Yiffers? (I highly suggest you people to google what the word "yiffer" means)
Saving you trouble it's someone who watches "furry hentai". I just hope furry doesn't mean what I think it does.

if you've ever scrolled down the server browser, you can kind of gather that most of them are anyway

I'm primarily backing straight up strange levels - no "strange" and no "totally ordinary" but with "hale's own mercenary" as the final rank instead of Australian, it's simple and already recognisable to existing players. It has to fit with the tf2 theme and phrases like "elite master" sound tryhard enough in cs, here it'd be downright ridiculous.
Another option is basing it off tf2's bountiful lore, something like starting at some insignificant character (not super familiar with the story) going through Lowly Merc to Miss Pauling to Mann Brother and finally to Saxton Hale (with other things in between). Bad implementation but you get the idea.
I'm presuming you're planning on using an 18 rank system to follow cs?

why not include totally ordinary? its a little bit of humor that valve put in in that they are so close together, itd be a nice nod to them to say, have them one elo apart or however youll be doing the ranking system.

Not too big a fan of the "strange" names. We get enough flak from other games for being too cartoonish and gimmicky. "Positively inhumane" and "wicked nasty" among others are alittle cringeworthy.

was thinking just because it was kinda obselete and wanted to fit it into 18, but you could just use a 19/20 rank system and go with them all
actually disregard everything i wanna be meatshot elite

We shouldnt have too many tiers. People won't remember what order they go in and people will be going up and down in rank all of the time which will make it seem meaningless.

My idea:
3 skill groups (kind of like CS:GO)
1st group, beginners:
1 Notably Dangerous
2 Sufficiently Lethal
3 Truly Feared
4 Spectacularly Lethal
2nd group, advanced players:
5 Gore-Spattered
6 Wicked Nasty
7 Positively Inhumane
8 Totally Ordinary
3rd group, professional players:
9 Rage-Inducing
10 Server-Clearing
11 Legendary
12 Australian
Keeping the "strange" naming since it kind of fits the most.

BonafideThere are 18 CS:GO ranks, so what you do, is you take random words from the tf2 universe and paste them behind these 18 strange ranks, removed hale's own and strange since they didn't really fit.

also imagine having a gore-spattered rank
"hey man how's your gaming going?"
"pretty good, i just got gore-spattered last night"
it just sounds gross

Very much dislike the highest rank culminating in "Australian." It's a Valve joke, sure, but it seems a bit out of context for a ranking system reffering to players, and a bit lack-luster also.

I don't see anything wrong with embracing the cartoony-ness of the game. We aren't CS or Quake why should we pretend to be?

Well that is fine. Refrences to Hale are something that might work. "Hale's own apprentice" for something near the top and "Hale's equal" or "Hale's legendary assailiant, "Grand Master Hale," are all something that keep that cartoony vibe (not my personal fav but it works) without being "Australian."
My point is just "Australian" has its own context outside of the game that means something very different than what the ranking would. So a better word or grouping of words unique to the context of tf2 would be best.

How many skill tiers do you need? Metals seem to be the easiest standard.

It varies depending on the service being measured. TF2 Pickup has about 800 rated soldier entries as it's linked to ETF2L and it's Highlander pickups haven't taken off, and TF2Center has around 7300 with a much broader player base.
My instinct is to be incredibly tight with the top few ranks, just fixed numbers so they are a very small group regardless of population size, but more evenly distributed after that.
There's some great stuff so far :D

I like how both LoL and Dota do it. The ranking system in LoL is very straightforward and skips out on all the corny names being suggested here. And of course Dora with the straight up MMR but I don't know how applicable that is to your system.

Jon, you're amazing. Will this be solely eu-centric or will you be utilising all the stats from around the world (sizzling stats, livelogs, etc)?

he said he wanted to avoid giving out straight numbers and just use rank names. i like the idea of simple "bronze silver gold platinum diamond etc" ranks that lol does however, very easy to understand from an end user perspective and doesn't use complicated names like using strange ranks would.

I don't think the name is that bad, but in my opinion it would make a lot more sense if "Australian" was only the 4th highest rank.
EDIT: Shoutout to Tommunist

It'll be logs.tf based at the start at least so as International as TF2 Center gets. Anything coming later depends on being able to get the right information out of those services. The main difficulty is identifying populations that are good for it, just throwing everything in doesn't work well.

counting center logs would be kind of bad since a lot of people troll there, it's basically a pub most of the time

Maybe in eu cos you guys have pickup, and in na because americans... it's not at all like that in the aus/nz region lobbies, there's like 1 troll every ten lobbies at most in my admittedly somewhat limited experience.
Also your ranking probably should go down if you troll on centers, yeah? At worst people get bonus points or whatever against trolling shitters, your system takes the opposition's skill level into account, right Jon?
