It seems like just some normal CS stuff. But:
We are extremly disappointed on how teams decided to NOT attend our S12 LAN, with all the hard work admins have put into it. This will dramatically change for S13, and you can expect an announcement before the first week of matches on this.
Even though all four of our teams made it to LAN, it's something that we may need to watch as it could impact TF2.
Unless this has been said before, of course.

wait, so they ban people that don't go to a LAN.. but the player has to PAY to go to LAN? Okay.

I mean, they made the rule before LAN, and they stuck to it.
It's their choice to kill/strengthen their service (whichever way you see it) I guess.

well.. if the rule was in place prior to LAN, I guess it's not that big of a deal. Crazy rule though. Some people aren't rich.

That doesn't make it any less absurd.

We don't support the LAN really, and we are located in a place that is very expensive to fly out to, but if you make invite playoffs your team must go. Even if you can't personally afford it or may have to work. Gotta love it

I usually don't respond to this stuff, but this lemming like approach to hating ESEA is getting a bit out of control. You shouldn't be playing in invite if you're not capable of attending LAN. It's not fair to the teams who do attend LAN or the teams who could have attended LAN in your place. You don't have to be rich to buy a $200-300 plane ticket. ESEA offers to send players the prize pot for last place to help them get to LAN, for TF2 it's around $200 if I remember correctly, which basically covers your flight. They've done it for TF2 players in the past, and they did it for CS kids this season who took the money and dodged LAN. ESEA isn't perfect, but it's by far the best league TF2 has and has ever had. People are so quick to shit on ESEA and forget what our scene was like before it. You guys really need to sit back and think for a second instead of blindly acting like ESEA is horrible.

Hi, I'd just like to go out there and state that when it comes to LAN ESEA doesn't have much of a problem with TF2. This is because for the most part all of our players and teams have always shown up; We have a pretty solid track record. What they are talking about is because of CS teams who are comparatively a nightmare. When it is LAN time and the admins are worrying about teams showing up, it is always about the CS teams, never the TF2 teams, and that is something the TF2 community should be proud of.
In addition, what Justin said is completely true. ESEA has always offered to front last place prize money to teams in order to help pay for flights. Torbull can be rather proactive in contacting and working with Invite teams, and that effort is something that the rest of the community just straight up is not able to see. That is also why ESEA gets pissed off when teams don't show up or are forced to play 4v5 at LAN. It isn't because those teams couldn't afford it, it is because ESEA tried to work with them and they blew it off anyway.
The announcement should just be about a different/better way of handling bans in relation to LAN.

If you are in canada, the 200-300 dollar ticket is at least doubled.
moral of the story: dont live in canada if you are poor and want to go to lan.

guess it's good that they're moving lan to the northeast, which makes sense considering the population density in the united states. don't know if the rhode island thing is still happening though.

Man invite players never stood up for ESEA when I was an admin :(

People complain and get mad when players dodge lan and make it hard for the teams to get 6. Than they complain about ESEA doing something about it.
I like the rule, people are accountable. Not everybody can afford to go to lan or even find sponsors to get them to lan. So if you are one of those people you should at least be kind enough to your teammates and let them know you can't make lan so they should either find a back up that can make it in your place, or just replace you.
I do worry that if there are extraneous circumstances that a player would not be able to make lan as planned ESEA would ban them, but I would hope that they have some means of judging who is dodging for good/bad reasons.

BOOM
lol jk ;)
Also, the real reason for this (as anyone at the LAN should remember) is because one of the teams had to play 4v5 because one of their players decided to be a dick and dodge. Oh, and his excuse? He was mugged AFTER GOING THROUGH SECURITY and all the guy took was his BOARDING PASS. Just think about that for a second.
tl;dr - nothing to do with TF2, they're just prepping the CS kids for the day they don't have a LAN (cuz it's coming)

Agreed! As mentioned above ESEA is NOT perfect and believe me I have locked horns being a sponsor with ESEA on several occasions. HOWEVER, Justin is right! This is the best we got and until something else better comes along people need to support ESEA and quit the bashing.

ESEA plays a major roll in the NA TF2 scene, people can bitch about it all they want but without ESEA their wouldn't be finals on LAN which players and spectators alike look forward to every season. i can guarantee the vast majority of invite players would more than likely stop playing without ESEA. because their isn't any other league at this point in time that can offer everything that they do. of course they aren't perfect, sometimes the servers are pretty shitty and the client can blow ass, but honestly its more than we can say for other leagues that have tried in the past and failed
