No. I refuse to accept that going into the option menu is an "obscure" thing to anyone playing a video game.

mebit's a new Blizzard IP with a guaranteed pulse on release
lots of peeps in TF2 are bored out of their minds and want to learn a new game that isn't cs:go
Blizzard is positioning this game to be accessible to casual as well as competitive players
popular casual scene = healthy competitive scene
not sure why it is difficult to believe this game will be the new hotness come end of 2015
It'll be popular
It'll be polished
It'll be good
I'll buy it
I'll play it
I'll probably have fun too
But it isn't what I was hoping it would be and there's no chance I'll dump 4k hours into it like I did for TF2.
Got my hopes up and now I'm sad :(

Overwatch knows that the only way to make this game popular is to steal of tf2's userbase. I doubt Blizzard is playing this cleanly since all their PR is doing is trying to cater down to tf2 userbase.

To anyone that's upset about Blizzard inviting people like STAR or jerma or that muselk guy instead of other high level tf2 players: How aware do you think Blizzard actually is of high level tf2 players that aren't b4nny and still actually play tf2? Not many current top level tf2 players have that much exposure outside of this community tbh so you really shouldn't be all that surprised that more popular tf2 playing youtubers got asked over high level comp players.

ALT-F-XPheeshPeople bitched (and still bitch) about TF2 limiting FoV to 90...seems the competitive scene did just fine under that restriction.
I don't think it's the actual locking of the FOV that's the issue here. It's ideology that is required to be behind that decision. First it's a 72FOV, what's next? Is blizzard just going to completely disregard any competitive decision making?
Personally I trust blizzard, but I see why people don't.
I don't think that ideology is any different than valve's ideology for cs:go which was designed to be played competitively from the ground up. There's no need for a slippery slope fallacy.
In TF2 Valve stripped out bunnyhopping, conc jumping, replaced grenades with random dice roll crits and limited fov to 90 and in general simplified a lot of play compared to its predecessor, yet a strong competitive scene still developed. Overwatch appears to be more competitively geared than TF2 on launch already.

CS:GO has very limited customisation but nobody complains. Why? Because they got the default settings RIGHT, and the few customisable things that exist are PURELY superficial/preference-based (sensitivity, crosshair, aspect ratio etc). I don't give a shit whether overwatch has an fov slider but I DO give a shit if the default fov is too low (which it is).
Quake got it the most right. Default settings are good, and in-depth customisability exists. CS:GO is next tier down, with default settings good, but limited customisability. TF2 has fucking dumb default settings, but if you know what you're doing you can make it work well again (interp, fov etc). Overwatch looks like it's going to be the worst on the ladder with awful defaults and no customisation. Very few things could persuade me to play it seriously if the basic design is as bad as I fear.

Some of us didn't want to even consider the possibility of an "esport", you know. Some of us just wanted a fun pub game to play again. Some of us just wanted to have fun pugs with friends again. I never asked for TF2's development in fast forward and double intensity.

I think it is obvious that with success of Hearthstone Blizzard wants to apply the same formula to other genres be it MOBAs (HoS) or arena shooter. First, you should expect solid monetization in the game, second - abilities which allow any player to score plenty of kills without much skill. In tf2 we have random crits, Hearthstone is all about rng and in Overwatch it would be some kinda of BIG DAMAGE auto-aim abilities (see Reaper ult).
It still could be fun tho, but don't try to evaluate this game as a new Quake or some classical mechanic-madness FPS. Not gonna happen. The days of pure aim are gone, to have a competitive scene your game should be fun and easy enough to entertain big audience, to keep money flow and twitch.tv numbers high.
FoV sliders are too confusing and challenging for new players.

if a fov slider confuses and challenges somebody they should seek immediate medical assistance for suspected serious brain damage

Forefatherif a fov slider confuses and challenges somebody they should seek immediate medical assistance for suspected serious brain damage
It probably also has something to do with wanting streams and youtube videos to look exactly the same to every single player, so they have a tight control on what the game looks like. Which is MASSIVELY important for attracting brand new players, imo.

step 1: wait for game release
step 2: play the game
step 3: make up your mind then
Genuinely don't know why you guys feel the need to hate on any fps that isn't tf2 when it isn't even released yet. If overwatch is bad we'll know once people other than youtubers who get paid can actually play it. If it's good, then cool. If you still prefer tf2 nobody is stopping you from playing it. Creating a hate circlejerk based on paid reddit reviews that are intentionally vague is stupid.

For real though, I'm really not excited for this game. I've been a fan of blizzard for years. They haven't made anything decent since Diablo 2. Everything they make now has no interesting mechanics, or isn't a repeat churn out of what they have done previously. Overwatch is probably going to get the same treatment, except this time its "An original IP"

How are you guys making decisions of whether you'll play the game or not or if it'll be a good game? It's not even out yet and there's barely any information/content of it. The game might take a completely different direction from what the tf2 players played in this event and what it'll be like when it's released.
All of this thread is just theorycrafting and ranting, make your judgements about a game when you play it.

I like how seemingly nobody has mentioned the launch of this game. After the launch of Warlords of Draenor, hearthstone and diablo 3, can we trust blizz to be able to provide an even remotely stable launch to their online multiplayer game?
Having francis make fun of angry nerds on reddit is only funny so many times.

It's probably and already is true that they don't. Which is why I dislike them. I realized this more after the Hearthstone fiasco.

i think this 'first person moba' idea is based on the fact that overwatch doesn't look as if the 'skill cap' is focused on things like dm, more so game knowledge, positioning, map knowledge, and shit like that which i think is where it differs from tf2 heavily. i mean, by looking at the gameplay that's been posted, the reaper class for example just spins around, you don't even need to aim, the game does it for you, and get easy dumb as fuck one kills. maybe i just haven't been looking around enough and the guys that went over to play overwatch have answered this, but i feel like this is probably why they got smashed so hard by the devs. i think you can compare it to tf2 in the sense that its a classed base shooter, but i don't think tf2 players will really have any other edge over other plays like how b4nny says that tf2 players will be the best in this game, i don't think our dm and experience in this game will really make a difference. probably any game really can be an esport of this game can, its defo not quake level, but i mean nothing really is so its whatever just wait and see i guess.

Nothing will replace tf2 6s
As much as I love HL, this could be replacement, but there is no way to match the speed and skill celing that is 6s.
