No pain in starting early. Just remember your goal to improve and play for what makes you happy. Try not to be annoying and immature, that'll generally get you accepted.

Just find people you enjoy gaming with.

But just to put it into perspective, you might find a lot of older people don't want to play with you not because of your voice but because the age gap means there is a different level in maturity or interests. For instance I am in my 20's, I was born in 1990 so it would be harder for someone of my age to relate to a 13 year old these days, since we would have different humour.

If you find people you enjoy the game with then it doesn't matter but don't expect people several years older than you to want to play with you. When I build teams I do take personality into account with some players, you need to want to enjoy their company if you're committing to spend half your weeknights gaming with them (or more).

But yeah, find some friends and game, nothing should stop you but don't be surprised if older gamers don't want to be your friend.

I dont know anybody who has gone off on a kid just for being young, but i know ive been in more than a few lobbies where the kid with the high pitched voice is also the one who says a bunch of useless shit all the time, and screams whenever he gets a kill or dies.

Dont do that. Just make sure you dont talk during the game unless its important information, especially in HL lobbies. Nobody important should really get mad at that.

As long as you don't act immature nobody gives a shit how old you are. If they do then they probably aren't the kind of people you want to be playing with.

Just making this thread is already showing awareness that people don't like grating voices screaming about fwag stweaks in mumble, so you have that going for you. Just be mature and don't scream in mumble and people usually won't complain.

Yeah its ok even if you are 13. One thing, watch a lot of POVs of good comp players that might help you out a lot to start off :)

100% correct, but on the other hand I played with a team for a 3-4 months, really loved playing with them, played other games together and hung out in mumble a lot, and got to know them fairly well before realizing that they were almost a decade younger than me. I've also met people my age who are incredibly immature and not fun to be around, so as long as you keep that in mind I think age won't be a huge issue.

A lot of people are posting in this thread saying that it's completely fine to play at a young age and to not worry about people laughing at you. They are right. I know a ton of kids who I've played with who are great fun and are cool to hang around with. On the other hand though, there are some things you should try and keep in mind for other people's benefits. These may not apply to you but its stuff that I sometimes find make it difficult to play with some younger kids.

Don't go off on long stories about stuff you did. I know, it's a natural thing to want to let the world know of your achievements but for a lot of things, people don't really care and it can be bothersome to listen to. Unless you're close with the people or they're on your team, it may be a good idea to not talk for the sake of talking. Small talk is a skill you pick up as you get older but you should practice it by interacting with friends your age instead of on the internet.

Don't mention your age. I know I hear a lot of kids in pubs and lobbies say stuff like "My last team didn't like me because I'm 12".
1. We don't care.
2. It doesn't matter.
3. People might start making fun of you because of it.
If you play well, call well, and don't grate on anyone's ears no one will care that you're young.

Don't talk about how terrible you are at the game.
1. We don't care.
2. It doesn't matter.
If you are talking with your team and discussing your flaws and stuff you have to work on, that's cool. It's important to recognize your shortcomings. If you're in a random center and you're just talking about how bad you are at the game though, chances are, people don't care about it. Do your best and try to improve and that's all we ask.

These might not apply to you at all. You might look at these things and laugh because you don't do any of this. If so, great, enjoy your time in competitive. If you're not sure though, take a look at this and try listening to yourself when you talk in mumble and stuff. If you do that, you'll help yourself have fun, but also help everyone else have fun too.

rowpiecesI would suggest Newbie Mixes 2.0 ( http://steamcommunity.com/groups/newbie6v6pug ) as a lot of the people there are probably younger than you. goodluck

Not really most people are older, but that's beside the point; as a lot of people have said, maturity over voice. I've played with a lot of people with high voices and most people, especially in newbie pugs, don't care. Be confident in your voice because it's you; you don't have to listen if people try to make fun of you for your voice, especially in tf2center you shouldn't take anything most of those people say seriously.

you never really have to tell anybody your age in the first place, do you? as long as you arent annoying, rude, immature, etc, i dont see why anyone would have a problem playing with you. this holds true for people of all ages.

the voice thing is negligible; if you sound young, prepubescent, girly, anything... who cares? if you can speak clearly and your team mates understand what youre saying, thats all that really matters.

Wish I was in my teens when tf2 came out, I spent all of my free time getting nowhere with halo 2.

It's hard to play comp when you don't have control of your schedule. When I was younger, my parents would randomly take my sister and I out to dinner or something, and I wouldn't be able to make raid times in WoW.

Once I went away to college and was independent I was finally able to make time for comp TF2.

I think TF2 is really good in this sense though. I know that the only reason I got into comp TF2 over CS originally was I could play a lobby or a mix only committing 30-45 minutes instead of 90 minutes. If you are on a team it might cause some issues, but as far as just learning the game it really fits into schedules a lot better than many other games imo

Just be cool, don't be annoying. Act mature, don't whine and complain all the time. Listen and take advice from others. Have a good attitude. If you can't say something nice don't say it. Follow the golden rule; treat other the way you would want to be treated. Have dignity and respect. Help those less fortunate than yourself. Remember its a large world and there are literally millions of others out there just like you. You are not god's gift to humanity. Life isn't always fair, but sometimes it can be just. Don't freak out around girls. Be yourself but know when to tone it down. Don't lie. Be punctual and don't forget commitments. Don't let things interfere with your sleep schedule or school. Use proper grammar and punctuation when communicating. Know your limits only to break your limits. Wipe that stupid grin off your face. Never give up. Be patient but know when to act. Speak in the direct voice. Always answer when a question is asked of you.

pls guys my post was sarcasm.
it should be obvious you don't need anyones permission to play comp

when I was 13/14 I was on a really high level team in mohaa (#1 in ogl) and I used a voice changer. we later transferred to cod2 and made cal-i and I was probably 15?

when they found out my real age I remember getting made fun of in teamspeak. but really no one cared cause skill is skill.

its ok to be a squeaker, just don't be a typical annoying kid who never shuts up.
if people are still making fun of you in lobby, might as well troll them. tell them you're a girl or something

tl;dr: It's the internet
