omnivibhavpAnybody wants to help write a better replacement? Add me, maybe we can flesh out something

PS: Matchmaking's going to come anyway, but it should be a fun experience nevertheless!

If this is a genuine thing, I'd get involved. Not that I can code or do much, but I can fund servers and I also do own the domain for league.tf and that's a pretty nice domain to hold on to.

imo that domain is glorious if this is a thing thats going to happen feel free to ask for stuff in photoshop or moving banners or whatever I have some cred cause I helped with some of TF2Can's design stuff.

bouldersaamWhen you have mods saying shit like, "The thing is, users shouldn't necessarily know what will happen to them if they misbehave" you know you have a problem. That's some North Korea shit
lol, where was that said? i'm legitimately curious. that's hilarious

wareyaCan someone tl;dr what's going on for me, I'm working but still want to know what's going on

Thanks

Seems like the head admins who coded the site overruled their PR and general admins who have more experience working with people. This hurt tf2center's public image and then the head admins (coders) proceeded to ignore help when trying to resolve the issues they created. at least thats what I got from reading this

I think the biggest difficulty is that TF2C is basically ubiquitous, and the vast majority of users aren't directly affected by admin abuse.

I doubt most people will care about the DeutchLAN drama enough to stop using a site that works, and is popular.

I'm pretty serious. It shouldn't be that hard to get a working prototype in a week or two, which can possibly sustain us till MM arrives.

I was playing a non mumble required lobby on pl_goldrush with 4 pals, we were all screwing around because who cares it was gold rush. We were in the mumble even though we didn't have to be because we wanted to hang out with the other guys from the lobby. Then this brony got mad at us for "cluttering comms" and we all poked fun at his comment since it was a very unserious lobby. He then recorded the entire mumble conversation and got a demo of the game an made an hour compilation of all the "rules" the people int he lobby were breaking and sent it to an admin. I got a month ban and 3 of my friends got week bans with another guy I didn't know also getting a month. What a fucking shit show.

TL:DR For those who don't know, a bunch of Euro TF2 players set up a LAN (DeutschLAN) and TF2Center sponsored them offering them 2000 euros. Anyway sometime later TF2C realise they don't have that kind of money and drop the offer down to 500 euros. They then tell the LAN org that they will give another 500 euros if they ban a former TF2C moderator from the LAN because they don't get on with him. DeutschLAN tell them to get stuffed and drop the sponsorship.

Since then a bunch of top level admins and moderators have left and TF2C were supposed to write an announcement which was delayed several times until Marty (Admin) posted the statement on ETF2L and TF2C. He was then subsequently demoted and the post moved to a private forum.

This isn't the first time TF2Center has pissed off someone in the TF2 community so this was really the final straw.

I think you underestimate the effort. If you create a site with just some kind of PHP REST API it might break relative fast, since the demand for that site could be quite high and such a architecture scales bad. 1-2 weeks for creating the website, the server and the source plugin would be a fulltime job.

However, I would be in for discussions. Any ideas how to organize that?

In theory it could be done with a PHP REST API and AJAX, although that would inevitably fall apart pretty quickly.

On the one hand, these admins sound terrible.

On the other hand, Fornaught has been incompetently strangling the life out of the hl community for years and years and yet all of y'all still play in UGC, so there's a bit of hypocrisy there (especially when infinite was involved more actively as well).

I took the liberty of compiling a list of people who have offered their services in this thread and what they have offered.

vibhavp - Coding
R.E.M. - Forum + site Administration, PR & QA/bug testing.
VanguardDLK - Writing
Omni - Funding + domain usage
DukeDaniel - Graphic design/photoshop
nonagono - Coding
Schalla - Coding
Marty - PR
RTC - quality control, grammar stuff, promotion and PR
DoctorMiggy - Anti cheat
_In_sanity - UI/UX design & other front end coding. Maybe a little back end coding.
Pascal - Coding

Please let me know if you wanna be added to this list by posting here or adding me on steam. I would start a project post but it might be a bit premature.

Ok so I've gone ahead and set up a slack account, please send me your email address on steam if you would like to join.

If anyone here wants to speak with me about starting this thing then please add me :)
________________________________________________________________________________________________
EDIT: Ok we now have 20 people in slack and not everyone wants to be named so I'll abandon this list for now. Please keep adding me on steam and sending your email if you wanna help out.

Because those of us who don't toss around insults to the admins every time we don't get our own way find that UGC suits our purposes pretty well. Heck, I fought them tooth and nail on the round robin and, guess what, we all still get along. It's crazy how disagreeing like grown-ups changes things.

eeethmpsnall we would really need is a lobby system to last until matchmakingMM isn't a catch all for people looking to play lobbies tbh. CSGO MM has plenty of problems in it, and our current lobbies probably fall around the DMG/LE level to begin with. There's plenty of demand for cheater free, high quality games even at the GN level of CS, and I doubt it'd be different for TF2. What will change if MM becomes a thing is the reason for tf2c/l/whatev to exist. It will no longer be populated because its the only way to play low level 6s games, but because its better than MM in a way that MM can't be. Banning hackers, community feedback, and new maps are all plenty of reasons to continue the lobby format.

Yep. There's a reason why pug services like cevo and faceit exist and not just esea for csgo. It's because those new players will eventually want to kill themselfs and not just play solo queue where no one uses mics, its toxic and horrible (tf2 matchmaking will be toxic and horrible, maybe not as bad as csgo but it will make people want an alternative to just mm), and where teamwork might not be a thing. That's why having an alternative to mm would still be a good idea: custom maps valve might not add into regular mm, everyone being forced to join mumble, regularly banning hackers, and the whole idea of having a community like the one tf2c has with its forums.

I don't think it's right saying "well matchmaking is going to come out soon, might as well not even have lobbies anymore". What you're saying with that is new players won't have an easy alternative to get into when they want to I guess level up (that sounds pretty nerdy) from just mm. ESEA pugs for tf2 isn't an option, but lobbies like tf2c are for that exact reason.

REM_TF2I think we should just start again and make a new site with a proper ELO system for balancing teams like TF2Pickup does rather than base it on TF2Playerrankings or league experience.

How ironic

:\ I can't really say i've ever had a bad experience at tf2c. Its a shame that such a well put together, easy to use site is going to be boycotted by a large chunk of the community simply from the fault of its administration. Most of the issues came from there being too much power at the top end of the site combined with the general apathetic attitude that most players have towards playing lobbies.

I feel like if people didn't have the "It's just a lobby" mentality and tried to take it more seriously, then you would get a higher skill pool of players, and less strict admins. Again and again though you see people who decide to attempt to use a free service, which they have had no part in the creation of and then bitch when they can't do whatever they want.

People should keep in mind that if they are playing a lobby, then you are pretty much writing off the next 20-60 minutes of your time and you should plan accordingly. I don't understand how people could get offended by a temporary ban given for closing/leaving early when the expectations are clearly presented.

While MasterNoob and MotherTeresa have been quite harsh with the bans/silencing of protest etc lately you should have the expectation that when using their free service, you will abide by their rules. TF2 Center NEEDED a seperate admin team from the development team, as well as a much more well defined set of rules.

see TFTV Rules vs TF2C Rules. Even better you should see TF2Pickup's rules (anyone who's had to find the "I agree" button knows what i'm talking about). From the ground up there were just too many administration issues.

With how much has gone into TF2C and the playerbase that it already has, (I HIGHLY doubt the playerbase will move to a new site even if one was made, Unless TF2C was gone) It's simply not worth abandoning. However, we should be hesitant to continue using the site if no efforts are made to fix the obvious administration issues.

As a community we are way to fast to jump on a bandwagon and gather our pitchforks. Consider the effects of a change before you try to make it.
