as demoman after the nerf you need to understand you can't always be at the front lines throwing out damage and taking heals, after the nerf donating some of your old heals to your scouts can help out you team alot, while you take a more passive aproach. make sure that you are never alone (or alone with your medic) as well, since demoman isnt the best class in 1v1s especially against players who know what they are doing.

think about what your doing, why your doing it, and is it worth it in the end.

In my opinion, I think duwatna is the smartest demo in the world right now. Look at his i55 demos or stv's of his matches and I'm sure you'll learn a lot about where to position your self and things of that nature

Things a lot of demos do wrong:

- Not charging stickys
- Not use stickys enough
-Try to use pipes a lot
- Trying to set up a lot of traps

a good beginner tip is to definitely practice those rollouts, being fast to mid while being at good starting HP means that you can take more pressure so that your medic doesnt tank you hard (reducing other teammates heals) but also do extra early damage to stop early aggression.

on mids be more deliberate with your reloading, because when your team commits you can put out a lot of damage and/or acquire frags

not only on mids but for reloading in general, set up a pattern, b4nny used to do 4 stickies and 2 pipes at a time, as a demo u need to be prepared for anything that might rush or to do damage when ur team needs it most

always be aware of your positioning, ask yourself, am I close to my pocket or am i with atleast with someone on my team, getting caught out alone will hurt your teams defense a lot

practice DM and make sure to take your time with shots, you cant M1+M2 with the nerf in effect

aside from all these tips, pugging, scrims, and matches (so basically gaining exp) will improve your play greatly as demo, every team has different playstyles, know what playstyle your team needs you to play

good luck

playing pugs will be the most excruciating and least fun thing imaginable, but if you can bare through it, it helps tremendously.

i can somewhat agree with this lad, however if you have the drive to improve and really want to step it up then DO IT!

find someone with some experience/skill to review your povs and tell you when you're being a retard.

post-nerf i think demo positioning is the most important thing to get right. A lot of demos undervalue their life, I think a good demo is the one who does good damage while also being really hard to kill; from a combination of good positioning (individual and team) and good DM.

a good demoman goes to the tube on badlands last every time

real talk; good ammo management is important. Making sure you have stickies (or in general, any ammo) loaded when your team is initiating aggression and you are following them up and vice versa.

What makes a good demoman?

  1. a bad demoman wouldn't be sitting here discussing it with you, now would he?

but really from what I've seen from demos on my team, one of the most crucial things is self-preservation in terms of positioning and willingness to jump out when things go south, even if you've missed everything and feel shitty. Dm is important but is kind of secondary to that since, next to the med, you are the most important person on your team to have alive for defending.

and pls dont look at ur damage stats to determine how good of a demo you are.
far to many pug hero demos doing useless spam damage all the time instead of actually denying areas and backing up your team.

To add to what has already been said, if you play in team with normal comms (ie not lobbies), try to call significant damage you do and who to focus, as it helps your team to clean up your damage. Be precise and quick : "scout took 80 on train" at badlands mid, for example.

DarkdwarfI've been out of the loop for a while; how was the demoman nerfed?

Sticky maximum explosion radius changed to rocket explosion radius; airborne stickies' explosion radius now "ramps up" from 85% of max if instantly detonated.

Numbers might be a little off; doing this from memory.

watch some stvs of demos who have adapted well to the nurf. duwatna, bdonski, pamphlet, hassassin, dingo, muma to name a few na players. imo its a whole new style of play post-nurf.

e: im a retard I spelled nurf "nerf"

Well, that explains why stickies felt off when I tried out playing lately. :P

correct me if im wrong but i think after the gun mettle update and the demoman becoming god the stickies radius might have reverted back to the original sticky radius however the damage is the same as the nerf

Radius has returned to normal it seems, damage is exactly as is post "February 16, 2009 Patch" and the radius ramp-up mechanic isn't working.

Unless I'm missing something, as I don't have TF2 installed?

It's a tr_walkway_rc2 demo (recorded 2 months ago). It seems as though the radius is reverted (maybe identical to rockets), but the radius ramp-up mechanic doesn't seem to be working.

I dunno what the link is but this does not sound correct to me at all.

When I saw the thread title I was reminded of that one line from the 'Meet the Demoman' video.
