So my only monitor just died and I clearly need a new one. I can't buy one til March, but I'd still like suggestions. Thanks!
Questions.
1. Price range
2. What games do you play other than TF2?
3. Specs of your PC?

My suggestion is you get a CRT and enjoy the low display lag
1.- LCD and LED screens have higher display lag by nature from the way they work
2.- CRT is an unexpensive alternative specially if you already play at 4:3
3.- High display rate at low cost. Most early 2000's screens are 90 KHz allow up to 85 Hz but could get higher with OC
4.- Great for emulating retro games too !

I suggest you do research on each of these 3. These are probably the 3 most popular cheap 144 hz monitors.
These are all relatively cheap. I HIGHLY advise something 120 hz or higher, 144 hz is optimal. Anything below that is not worth it at this point.
Crt is alright, but it's honestly out-dated. They are huge, bad quality, and the advantages<disadvantages when compared to a solid 144 hz monitor.
Crt is ok

nothing has changed in awhile for monitors.

crt still perform the best in terms of response time and it will show all ur friends u are a hardcore quake player

I would not recommend to anyone in 2015 but I still <3 them

Yeah the VG248QE is great, had one for about a year and a half now and I love it.
edit: you have to mess around on the colors for the asus as they look pretty bad in default settings

have had both of these, if they were the same price i'd get the benq. However getting the cheapest one is your best bet as they perform about the same. The benq just has nicer menu features & colours.

I got my CRT for 5€ and its the lowest input lag I've ever had.
When you try it for the first time its a bit wierd because you feel like stuff happens sooner than usual
But yeah I do agree its not for everyone specially if you don't feel like carrying a 20 KG display to LAN
Color quality is pretty awesome tho

what are those annotations on the sides?
quake FTW

If you want to try something new, the 2420g gsync monitors are 399 refurbished
Pretty expensive but im interested to hear from a competitive gamer if gsync lives up to the hype because in theory it seems excellent

If you are willing to deal with some sketchy korean brands, the Qnix qx2414 is a 24" 1080p monitor at 144hz. I've overclocked mine to 160hz, I've got it to 200 hz with some async problems. I'm using the DVI only version.
Positives:
It overclocks well
its DVI only, with no scalar so it has very minimal input lag, supposedly comparable to benQ.
VESA mount
Price : 150$ is hard to beat at 144hz.
Cons:
It's a sketchy Korean brand that basically buys the panels that didn't pass QC tests at samsung/benQ and such.
Even the "pixel perfect" monitor can have up to 5 dead pixels.
It has the worst fucking stand ever, you have to VESA mount this thing, and that requires opening it up.
back-light bleed varies, and isn't too hard to fix, but still sucks.
Mild scanlines with overclocked.
Other:
The version I have doesn't have an OSD, so color correction is done through gpu control panel, which has it's problems.
The monitor comes way to bright, drop the gamma from 1 to like .65 or something.

ASUS VG248QE
1ms GTG, 144Hz, $229 (middle price point with a good portion of nice features ULMB = limited; has lightboost but not as many options as the BenQ models if I recall correctly)

X-star DP2414LED
1ms GTG, 144Hz, $188 (low price, pretty sure it's dual-link dvi only, overclockable ULMB = NO)
for the X-Star and QNIX be aware that you'll almost certainly have a dead pixel, or at least a stuck one if not more. The perfect pixel policy just means they won't allow more than 3 DEAD pixels, they don't care about stuck ones.

You should probably add "lightboost/ULMB yes/no" to that list, it's kind of important.
