I really do see people that care about today for the right reason, I disagree that it's entirely for that purpose but I suppose there is a vocal minority that may make it seem that way. The Mother's/Father's Day comparison is pretty bad to be honest, Mother's/Father's Day are properly celebrated as times to really appreciate what your parents have done for you and while there is advertising built around it (as with literally every holiday) it's prevalent because there is always a reason to thank your parents for something and it's always a good idea to do so.
