i think it'd be amazing if someone who was around since the beginning could do an article about the history of competitive tf2 and the 6v6 format.
They had 6s and 8s in CAL, I remember playing on Mach4 and 2Fort back in the day.
blackbanjoIn the beginning, we tried a lot of different formats and class limits. By the time Season 2 of Cevo rolled around, 6v6 and the current class limits had been finalized. The main difference from current TF2, besides the weapon modifications, was the way we played maps and the rules they were played with.
We played a lot of 2fort, dustbowl, ctf_stronghold, gravelpit, granary with gates...never hydro though.
looks like blackbanjo found an internet hookup in his farm after all...

Pheesh unfortunately that hard drive is long gone. All i remember was they ran frod and zet on sniper and they apparently didn't know about spies.
To clarify my first post, i guess i should have said that cevo was the first official league that held 6v6. Correct that animeman was the original person that started the poll. He did go by another alias, but for the life of me i can't remember it...it was same the alias he used in TFC for many years..think he changed it to animeman when he joined ae. Pheesh do you remember?

If I remember correctly, during the times of 7v7 ladder there were these maps
Dustbowl, mach4 (insane sniper map), not completely sure about hydro, 2fort, warpath, ctf_well, impact?. I may be missing one or two

Yeah I remember Rambo being probably the best of them at demo/soldier, fatal1ty was just okay, the others all had good aim but absolutely no gamesense whatsoever so it was fun to beat them.

What was his clan before, or his GUILDS lol. I barely remember him from tfc for some reason.
I think of animated but he was the hacker.
In that first month I remember the doctors being one of the top teams, I forget what game they came from. They knocked us out of the tourney on 2fort and ended up winning it all the match after I think, probably vs ex.. 2fort was such an abomination to play in TF2 compared to how it played in TFC...so awful. And the crits...good lord. I think the doctors were probably overtaken by ex (reptile, Dion? and some other dudes) soon after, but not sure.
Rent A knight was actually playing when TF2 first came out and pretty much tearing it up as he always did in TFC, seemed like he carried AG I think it was? I don't think he was active for long but that guy can just pick up a game and dominate at it. He'd take multi-year breaks in TFC and come back dominating every time.
I remember there was no or little delay or slow for scoping/unscoping so you'd have two douche snipers strafing back and forth full speed firing shots constantly. Also, sniping people through the gates at the start of rounds was expected. (you could snipe through the material in between). Somehow that was legal at least in those early games.
There were so many annoyances with the game I think that's probably why I walked away from playing competitive after those 2 months. For some reason I still hang around after all these years...

This makes me think that jaeger and animeman are the same person? Is that the alias you were wondering about?

Hello, folks. It seems you've predicted my and enigma's hand. I'm gathering people to interview about the origins of competitive TF2. I'm obviously keeping tabs on this thread, please keep posting. :)
To this day the most intense matches of all time were played in season 1 on ctf_2fort. The rules for that map were so atrocious it was more a sheer test of will than anything else.

Are there any videos of these old 2fort matches?

For a bit of history, predating all of this (in the UK at least) we had Wireplay TF league and Multiplay TF leagues ... that is TF as in Quakeworld Team Fortress. My memory is hazy but I believe it was 9vs9 (or 10vs10 5 offense, 5 defense?), I do remember there were no class limits and running a 3 Engineer flag room hold on Aztec that was unbeatable. However that may have been one league, because I also remember only being able to lock one lift on Well flag area in the up position with a dispenser because we only had one engy (me).
I also remember that one team would pick one map and the other pick a different map, so everyone had their home maps.
Looking forward to more TF2 history lessons.

I genuinely feel like TF2's decision over team size had a huge negative effect on its status as a competitive eSport.
I came into the TF2 scene around three months after the game was released, and that was pretty much the time when the European scene was _just about_ accepting 6 vs 6 as the primary team size.
The problem was, there were still 9v9, 8v8, 7v7, 6v6 and 5v5 leagues / competitions going on. Different continents were playing the game with different team sizes, and different leagues within each continent were also enforcing different rules and team sizes.
I honestly believe TF2 should have been made a 5v5 game. All other competitive FPS games at the time were being played in a 5v5 format, meaning that CS, CoD, and other FPS teams could literally pack up their things, and come and play our game, but instead they would have to find an additional player, and that was just too much effort :P
The other problem was that the teams that did move to TF2 came from games such as TFC (8v8 in Europe, 9v9 in US), and I think games like natural selection, ET, Quake etc.. didn't play 5v5 matches. They didn't want to break up their teams, and so playing in 8v8 matches would have been ideal. But still, going against the current meta for FPS games proved to be a problem.
The problem became apparent at the multiplay i-series when the final was about to be played on stage, and we needed an additional computer setup on the stage. No other game needed six computers, and so a last minute PC had to be found and setup. The extra PC's crashed, people were sitting uncomfortably at a desk made for five, and overall, it was a complete mess. I believe other 'turn up and play' LAN events could not accommodate a TF2 tournament, simply because their TUP setups were meant for teams of five.
I still think 5 vs 5 would be best, with class limit 1 across the board, but it can never be changed, because the meta game would be completely different, and a 5vs5 with medic, soldier, scout, demo, and heavy/utility would feel so much slower than the current setup.
End of badly structured post. Don't care!

I feel like this would make a great Fully Charged episode. Bring in a handful of old school folks and explain how 6v6 came to be and tell stories about the old days.

Everything else is pretty valid, but this part of your post doesn't say anything about whether or not 6v6 is a good setup, but says loads about the people managing the event :P

I forgot about something else that made soldiers very OP, they really didn't take self damage from rockets.
His post wasn't really about whether 6v6 is good inherently but rather whether it was a good idea given the status quo of comp FPS play.
dfythat's awesome, i figured someone would remember that far back. animeman was great, played a little bit of everything right? was around when coL was really dominate for quite some time
Yeah he played a little bit of everything, but primarily soldier. He was a backup for coL but played for them at s5 LAN as scout when enigma couldn't go. He didn't do amazing mostly because he didn't play much anymore, but he had short notice when told he was needed for LAN. Incredibly chill guy, though.
dianadid animeman ever go by a different alias? i could have sworn he was called something else way back when i started getting interested in comp, but every time i try and find out, it doesnt lead anywhere
The only other in-game alias he ever wore (to my remembrance) is Mythin, though his real name is Mithun.

Animeman had a few hilarious spy plays that LAN.
It's also good to see enigma's immune system got strong enough for him to leave his bubble.

PheeshClass limit wise I seem to recall the initial limits people came up with were a max of 2 per class...as I remember a team using 2 medics on more than one occasion. By the time that first tourney happened I think the medic limit was set at 1, not sure about the demoman..
Prior to the first tourney, it was pretty much a universally agreed rule that it should be 1 medic, 1 demo, 2 of everything else for class limits. However, Europe decided (for nearly a year, maybe a little longer) that it should be 1 medic, 2 of everything else. When players from NA pretty much said "demoman limit of 2 is fucking stupid and overpowered," Europe's excuse was "it's not overpowered, it's just that no one has found a counter for it yet." l0l.
