M40x look good, do I need a amp or anything like that to power it??
Also how much of a better sound am I expecting, will it destroy my clouds in sound quality?

No. I would recommend replacing the pads, but that's just a matter of preference and ear size. Mine are fucking massive, so the stock pads were a bit small for me.
My understanding of clouds is that they're fairly heavily based on takstar pro 80's, which is why the audio quality is so good compared to other gaming headsets. If you want a set of headphones just because you want to jump on the "fuck gaming headsets" bandwagon you probably don't need to.

What about the ath-a500x (or the closed version)?? I've never used a pair of open headphones so I don't know how they sound, but I read that they are better for gaming.
if you don't know how something sounds then maybe you should go to the hifi store closest to you and try some headphones before buying a pair :)
imo open/closed being better/worse for gaming is marketing bullshit

If ur on a budget i would reccomend the akg 240s if u r in a quiet gaming environment (open ended!!!)
Edit: to the post above no it doesnt rly but it does come into ur environment. If you have loud housemates or family or whatever ur gonna hear everything and if you are a volume up gamer they will hear your tf2 sounds

m50xs are terrible for the price. They sound worse than the cheaper m40xs.

These are god tier for the price but you can get them somewhere else significantly cheaper, I seen them on newegg the other day for 45$.

If you have the budget for ath-a500s get HD 6XXs and a dac/amp instead.
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx
for some reason ath-a500x sells for around $120 here and the m40x sell for $90, my budget is just around $120.
Is the a500s better than the m40x??

Yikes misread OP.
Whatever you do, buy the stupid in-store warranty on headsets - because you can continually replace + renew forever lol. - and lets face it headsets don't live very long typically (I've never had one make it 5 years).

30 bucks over your budget, but I can't recommend these enough. My pair is going strong after 4 and half years of extensive, extensive use. Designed for monitoring purposes with a flat frequency response in mind. In other words, they are intended for accurate playback, not a scooped midrange or exagerrated sub bass (for instance) like many consumer headphones will have. Whenever I listen to other headphones, they can have interesting nuances but almost always feel off in a certain way. While their eccentricities may bring the magic out in some recordings, they will completely disgrace others. This pair is like a neutral point of frequency response I know I can always rely on – they sound fantastic too!
I've recommended them to a few friends over the years who were looking for new headphones and they've all been immensely satisfied with their purchase. Good luck matt

after a bit more looking I'm probably going to try the open headphones, ad500x sell for around $110 and the ad700x sell for $130, is the $20 difference worth it?
