fuck this guy
OblivionageI agree with him tbh. I got that vibe from the community towards star. Everyone I played with or watched, even low skill divisions, always shit on pub tf2 players or r/tf2. The community was egotistical from what i observed and I was too. a lot of people didn't want to let casuals in for some reason.
If Valve didn't make pubs in such a bad joke maybe people wouldnt shit on TF2 pubs. Killing community servers ruined any semblance of real gameplay in pubs. Random crits flat out discourage people from taking the game seriously. People don't shit on the pub community. They shit on pubs. There is no pub community and Valve is the one to blame for this. I for one remember when community servers had community comp teams. What we have now? Festering garbage.
LegendaryRQAIts more like wherever someone brought up "good" TF2 players and someone mentioned a YouTuber, like Stabby or STAR_ himself; people would just call them Bad, Skilless Pubstompers.
There are idiots in the comment section of every single video on youtube. He needs to grow thicker skin.

It seems like a lot of people so far think that Star just had a chip on his shoulder and was an outlier.
I can tell you from my own personal experience, prior to all the hate recently for prolander. Everything Star is saying rings very true with my experience and it wasn't like I was just some youtuber with limited exposure to comp. I played about 4-5 years of comp.
This isn't me trying to say, every single person in X community is shit and the other has no issues. My point is, the loudest voices are often the most toxic and if you don't do anything to try and silence them. They'll represent your community, whether it's accurate or not.
Do you think the other communities in tf2 (casual/highlander) view sixes overall as a friendly, warm, welcoming community?
Do you think other communities in tf2 (casual/highlander) view tf.tv as a positive place to have a discussion?

glassi've never gotten the vibe that the youtuber side of the tf2 community cared to promote comp tf2 very much. what's the referring to?
edit: how does anyone play or spectate overwatch without getting a seizure
I believe this was based on that at the time (Several years ago), it was extremely rare for tf2 youtubers to have an extensive understanding of competitive, thus, star felt the competitive community alienated him and other applicable channels if only because their status made them appear less reputable in the scene.
While i've had a good experience overall with the competitive community, I think there is actual merit to this claim. I have seen people relentlessly talk shit about dane, muselk, and even myself if/whenever an opinion didn't like up or something said was incorrect. I am certain several people even here still view someone like dane as uninformed (even though his opinions have changed a lot since then). A lot of my content from one year ago was almost scientifically engineered point-by-point to prove that I wasn't just the pubshitting roster rider I had seen multiple people in the competitive community namecall me as.

The problem is not only 'the sixes community'. He was referring to the entire competitive spectrum, which is divided away from TF2 as a whole. That means HL, that means 6s, and that means 7s too. 6s is however a much tighter knit circle, and therefore gives the most counterforce if you don't align with every opinion.

I know this completely contradicts what I said earlier in the thread but highlander players are so much more toxic than 6s players, take a look at the ugc forums and it's just a complete shithole and that is with all the forum moderators removing most of the more obnoxious people.
My most negative experiences with people in tf2 is overwhelmingly in highlander and anyone who I've talked to who has played both agrees that highlander players are much more toxic than 6s players

I've never seen an actual good competitive player shit on a youtuber lol. Everytime I've seen someone be like "(name-drop youtuber here)? that dude sucks lol" they're not even low-mid open or silver highlander, it's literally ugc steel level and below players trying to act cool by pretending they're so high and mighty and above players that the more mainstream tf2 population would know. Unfortunate that they're associated with competitive as a whole, especially when they're more or less glorified pubstars.
even then it's usually people doing that to people like stabby or uncle dane, people with really defined "mains". Never really saw it much with star.

Agreed, although I think that's mostly because new blood is usually more toxic compared to older more seasoned players and highlander hemorrhages significantly more top level players than 6's.

Sigafoo I don't think he's talking about the whole community, believe he's directly talking about the competitive community. More specifically sixes.
Please my dude, 90% of stars comp experience was in HL not 6s. The one season he played 6s was when he played in open with 3 invite players.
I know you gotta shill, but at least be honest.

his experience playing this game is different than all of urs cause hes in a unique position and the hate he's describing is just based off of his position. when he describes the community like that, he doesn't mean if ur just some random player ppl are gonna treat you like that. u cant say hes wrong and those things did happen
like he was singled out in those posts whenever he was on that team ppl just shit talked him saying how he was just garbage and being carried etc etc which is understandable anyway because its a videogame and i guess he just isn't the kind of person to deal with that like most ppl that play this game just fragile i guess
who even cares wat community is 'toxic' adn what community isn't? that doesn't even mean anything and why would any of you even care about the way people treat you in a videogame anyway?
whole lotta hubbub for nothing rly

Why do YouTubers make observations that are misinformed/stupid and paint competitive in a negative light to their thousands of viewers then complain the competitive community doesn't like them or take them seriously, what do they expect
the only real toxic ppl in 6s are the few invite players that think they're kings irl for being good at a videogame
Yeah imagine if people weren't egotistical pieces of shit, you're so right star, if only everyone was more like you
I really tried supporting star when he started becoming a full time twitch streamer for a while but he just became so obnoxious and unfunny, dont know if he was trying to appeal to his viewers or whatever but i just cant stand him now and wish he just fucked off
Guess im just a toxic tf2 community member that ruined his gaming experience
We need more jerma less star
Back when I was more active, Star's content and opinions were considered a joke. Did something change?
If not, treat this with the irrelevance it deserves.

What did you guys think about STAR_ in the Ready Up documentary?
He seemed like he knew what he was talking about. I haven't watched the twitch clips op posted, because i don't want to ruin my day.

I do have to give you credit for doing your part to silence toxic voices. By which I mean I popped into your stream once, made a light-hearted joke in chat about the Pootis Fazbear fanfic and you immediately perma-banned me.

lol he is trash talking tf2 community meanwhile he is playing overwatch which is way worse...
he says that people are egotistical pieces of shit... seems a bit familiar? ;) yes i am saying star is egotistical, (piece of shit? well i will leave that part up to you)

Tino_Why do people still care about what he has to say again?
This tbh, from what ive seen and heard he's kinda become an arsehole in general. Whenever i watch his streams he's arguing with or flaming his viewers or mad as fuck playing overwatch, just seems like he's become a really toxic person.

So, he deserved getting DDoS'd while playing TF2 after all?
on the one hand, I find it hilarious that star is a successful ow streamer who still has massive hurt feelings about people from a different game memeing about him like 6 years ago
on the other hand, it's equally hilarious that everyone in this thread is basically validating his shitty opinions by caring so much about this dude
y'all deserve each other
EdIt: and I deserve u for posting this hehe

If you think the tf2 community is toxic you have never been to a lan
I'm gonna take WarOwl's experiences here as an example. WarOwl, a "new" player to TF2 (at least in it's current day state), felt the community was all around overwhelmingly positive. Though, he did find the Casual server denizens to be quite obnoxious (though that doesn't necessarily mean they were toxic, just annoying). He very much liked the competitive community from what he experienced.
STAR_ has also had good times in this community. If he's going to boldly state that the friends he's made within this community all fall within being toxic then that's just horseshit. I mean, sure, people get competitive sometimes and say some hurtful shit but that's just competitive. It happens in every game.
In my own experience, I've definitely encountered toxic players. Though, in my mere 500 hours or so playing, for example, CS:GO, I've encountered more toxic and just outright vulgar players than I have ever in my 4000 of playing TF2 (for much longer nonetheless).
I think the 6s community itself gets a bad rap as being "toxic" just because it's more closely knit. The most toxicity I've ever experienced is actually in other gamemodes (i.e. HL). 6s players generally just want it to be understood why 6s is played; not for elitism but for a combination of good gameplay and "spectator-ability."
I'm going off on a lot of tangents that might not even be relevant to the OP at this point, but I think they're important to talk about and take into consideration. I'm tired for TF2 being flamed for things that are absurdly untrue and pandering.

"One of the hugest problems actually was the community behind TF2, but you can't say the TF2 community is bad because they give money to Tip of the Hats."
dude what
dude what
Are the people that are starting to get into comp tf2 right now going to be dissuaded from it by a guy like star crying in a video? I doubt it.
This will not affect anyone in any significant way. Other esports personalities already think of us as a meme community, and it's their loss. We should welcome the ones with open minds (warowl, bardolph etc) but it's not worth anyone's time paying attention to shit like this (has he ever been of note in any form of competition?).

phobiahe hasnt played this game in years he isnt relevant
thats actually not true at all what he said about youtubers, we (me and dippidy) played with lazypurple and all of us on the team and alotta people outside of it said he was actually really cool and surprised how good he was at scout for being a pubbee youtuber and actually just grinded mge but he just suddenly went dark and stopped playing
tf2 pub community is really bad, it has a disproportionately high amount of autistic people, furries, other social rejects etc.
a large part of this is that tf2 is seen as a gateway game that you play when you first get a pc.
almost every pub i see people votekicking people especially anyone with even an iota of ability to play the game. honestly i think lol and dota has a better public community from experience, id rather get shittalked by peruvians than hear a 30 year old texan man scream over the mic about being a friendly heavy
the comp community is full of wonderful people who put a lot of their own time and money into helping the scene, and its a disservice to them that the public community is so wretched.
