I do believe this is just the beginning of the major UI changes the Steam client will implement in coming months/years. I can't wait to see what comes next.

yes, it has something like the steam mobile chat history now, it only remembers (or at least only shows) up until just before this beta though.

for some reason they decided to make people's names show up only as what you have them nicked as which is kind of dumb imo, why not just stick with current_alias (nickname) like before
also kind of annoyed that you can't just click on the picture at the top of the steam chat window or the friends list to get to their profile
wish there was a way to get rid of the group chats thing at the bottom as well
looks kind of promising for the future with saving the chat history and stuff like that but currently it's too non functional for me to actually want to use it lol
edit: i looked in the settings and they have an option to append nickname to friend's name instead of completley replacing them which is good, looks like before and is solid
edit2: changing someone's nickname or tag or pretty much doing anything with the new ui takes like twice as many clicks, once they get things sorted out and properly released im sure this will be really good tho

honestly, if they make group chats not terrible, I'd be happy with it

It does look pretty nice I must admit, but is there a way to remove categorizing friends by what games they are playing, it's stacking on top of the friends list and I couldn't find a way to disable it
EDIT: Otherwise it is pretty dope. You can see if friends are playing in a party solely from your friends list, you can send voice message through chat box, upload images that will appear in the chat box. Also if you hover over the names, the exact time of when a certain message was sent will appear. You can't view game info anymore but you can see what server (Casual/MM/Community) and what map they are playing on. Chats open slightly slower but it might be just me
You can mark yourself as "Invisible". It shows you as offline but you see your friends list and everything just as if you were online
You can still view game info, but only when you right click on friends from your library

Apparently there are multiple reports of getting a mighty increase in fps after installing the redesign beta.

Absolutely love the redesign and this has been long overdue, it's so much more convenient to use a Steam integrated system than having to use 3rd Party software. Another important consideration is that this removes yet another barrier to new players entering TF2 competitively, no 3rd party software required and assuming the voice quality is good we should probably look to make Steam chat the community standard.
For those of you in the TF2PL, TF2Center and PugChamp design teams, would be great if we started making plans to switch to this system once it exits Beta and they fix whatever issues arise. Exciting stuff!

no beta
2639 frames 16.351 seconds 161.39 fps ( 6.20 ms/f) 11.873 fps variability
beta
2639 frames 16.063 seconds 164.29 fps ( 6.09 ms/f) 12.037 fps variability

also i just wanna go ahead and predict that they'll add functionality to automatically join voice with people you're partied with in-game. seems like a no-brainer to offer something discord can't
