Is there actually a heaven or hell or is it just nothing like before you were born? I don't understand why everyone exists if there is nothing after death. If you die without achieving anything meaningful like most then what is the point of living a failure of a life in the first place. I don't know if God is testing me for a reason or if it's just stupid self pitying for no reason at all.
1.) i dont think human beings are capable of comprehending a state of non existence
2.) you choose what the point of living is for you personally, you give a point to living yourself with what you decide to do

Hi Sheepy,
The question of what happens after one dies is a peculiar one which begs our curiosity, but there simply is no way we will ever know what lies on the other side whilst we're still alive. At best, however, I can offer some philosophical advice which can help you overcome this angst.

Life seems to have meaning when taking on the belief that there lies a life-after-death which acts as a reward for our good deeds done in this life. This way, the difficulty and troubles life brings seem justified. However, as you're realizing, the difficulty and strife that come with life seem completely in vain when there is no reward for bearing them.
Nietzsche looked at this problem differently though. Nietzsche thought that living a life of struggling and suffering in order to fare well in the afterlife is a life-denying mentality. You are living not for life itself, but for something life isn't, thus actively throwing life away, giving life less value - taking away meaning from life.
Nietzsche proposed an alternative to the concept of an eternal life-after-death, called eternal-return. Eternal return means that once your life is over, you will simply relive it exactly as you did, again and again, ad infinitum. Logically, if you're going to relive this life over and over, you might as well make it the best damn life to live - make sure that you never suffer in this existence, but instead triumph and succeed in it for your own sake, and no-one else's.

The Law And Order Theme plays as it fades to black, then nothing
your heart stops pumping blood into your brain, so you kind of black out, but like permanently. from a first person pov it's probably a similar experience to standing up too fast and temporarily losing consciousness.
Death is only the beginning

If this is a "how can other things exist if all I see is nothing" then it's more along the lines of you not being there to interpret and comprehend it. Everything still happens, even if you can't observe it, in the same way that stuff is still happening on the other side of the world even if I'll never see it.
If it's a "why do people do things if it's all meaningless in the end" then I'd just argue why wouldn't you? The idea of "I want to be happy and make others happy, so I should do that" doesn't suddenly change because things aren't permanent. Whether I stop existing or I go to an afterlife, decades down the road, doesn't have anything to do with the fact that I want to be happy and helpful right now.

I'm no therapist but I think it's a bit unhealthy to consider "not having a lasting legacy and major impact in the world = failure". The reality is pretty much everyone has a noticeable impact in their circles of friends and communities they belong to. You don't need history books written about you to be a success and have a good life.
