surely a lotta people have become vegans over the coming years. what effect has this had on the rate of meat production? like i'd do it, but i dont see any differences even though a lot more people are vegan.

the damage is made when its on the shelf. not when its in my tum tum.

personally, i just eat whatever nutrients i'm lacking in that week + essential 2 meals of salmon with the occassional fast food whenever i'm too tired/been out too long skating to cook. i think it would be harder to go full out vegan because it would be more complicated, can be more expensive than eating meat and not really filling.

i think if the way food was produced was restructured through the courts as a means of saving the environment, like reducing space used for livestock and replacing it with foods that are more beneficial for the environment, it would be a lot easier. like u could still eat steak if u wanted only it would be more expensive because it would be more scarce, but the shit that vegans eat were plentiful and cheap. i wouldnt mind that

funhaver1998the damage is made when its on the shelf. not when its in my tum tum.

This is true, but by decreasing the demand of meat products, the production will decrease in accordance with the demand. So if more people eat less meat, less meat will eventually be produced to adapt to the decreasing demand.

thats why i made that last point. but its not like sainsburys are just gonna stock less meat because their customers would be pissed. the only way to make change is set laws based on reducing it

I am not a vegan because not participating in one incredibly destructive industry is fine and dandy, but I am literally typing this post on a PC that probably had parts made in sweatshops and materials mined by essentially slaves. I don't think I should be morally obligated to not participate in a single cancerous, unethical industry when there's literally a million other industries I have to participate in that are just as bad or even worse in order to survive.

You are aware that it costs money for the stores to buy and refrigerate meat? If meat does not get sold before its due date, it is essentially wasted money. If people buy less meat, stores are not going to keep buying the same quantity of meat, they will buy less meat to adapt to the decreasing demand.

famine
it's mostly more expensive to be vegan
i like the taste
you can't get that amount of protein easily without supplements so staying healthy while working out is just harder
your jaw/ teeth can be badly shaped/deformed if you don't eat it while you're growing as meat is some of the hardest to chew food we can readily get. let alone other defects you can get while growing up
if we were in the wild and a hungry animal saw us he wouldn't think 2 seconds before eating us, sure we're smarter and have self awareness but both parties are going to die anyway and want eachother to die for the most part, either for resources or for less danger

also my subjective opinion but i feel like if most people switched to being vegan we'd have a global skinny crisis as most people wouldn't be educated well enough on how to sustain their current weight from just vegetables and fruit

alright ondkaja u have a point there but i think its too hard to just organise that its like asking everyone to jump at the same time in london. id be pissed if i was just not allowing myself to eat this thing staring me in the face while the issue continues

i guess thats why vegans get all crazy like that and start never talk about anything else except for the vegan shit its because theyre pissed they are making this sacrifice that isnt having any effect on anything because its impossible to organise

TL;DR version

The way all food on earth is made is wrong not just meat.

Long version

You realize everything on this planet is mass produced to such a degree that they throw out BILLIONS of tons of food each year. Not talking just about meat, I'm talking EVERYTHING from meat to vegetables and fruit, to canned goods even when they have and expiration date of 3-5 years non refrigerated.

Ever wonder why with all the food thrown out each year there are people starving in so many countries around the world? Do you think Big Food companies are ever going to provide water and food for free to these countries? It all comes down to money in the end.

The problem is not just with meat products it's with everything being mass produced by machines at dazzling speeds each day. To fix the issue with meat over-production you would need to first fix the fundamental way of thinking that Big Food companies have where quantity not quality is the focus. The problem at the end of the day is not there being too many vegans or too many meat eaters. It's about these companies wanting to be richer and richer and making so much that it causes damage on a global scale. They all know they are causing irreversible damage to the planet, trust me. They just. Don't. Care.

All and all more companies are starting to focus on quality as people have gotten sick over time ( literally) from the mass produced garbage they feed us each day. So hopefully in a couple of decades this will no longer be such a big issue.

Actual thread answer

I like both meat and vegan stuff, me stopping to eat either or even 5 million people doing so will not change the way food is produced, and people are not carnivores or herbivores, we are omnivores, we can eat and digest almost everything. Morally people can do whatever the hell they want but in the end it's just preference, getting moral about what you eat is not going to change the main problem with food production, it's equivalent to an angry toddler stomping their foot real hard.

I get sick when I don't eat actual meat for a while. Supplements haven't helped.

Not as big of a problem here since biological meat is actually considerably cheap here (compared to regular meat, which is pretty damn expensive compared to the US).

My best justification is that I have crohn's disease and some of the best protein sources under a vegan diet aren't really compatible with my health issue (namely seed-based sources, wholegrain etc). Maybe it's not a perfect justification but I'll live with it for now.

I do agree that the meat industry is environmentally and economically obnoxious, though.
