If the map was a little bit more open, if that's how to phrase it, I'd like to see it tried in Highlander as an alternative to Gravel Pit, and cp_steel (Oh dear, that's blasphemy!). Seriously: A/D maps are cool in Highlander to test coordination. Gravel Pit did quite well with that, except enough people complained back in S12 we haven't seen it since. Now, all we really have left is cp_steel. Steel is a fairly good map in Highlander, but let's be honest; it's getting really goddamn stale being played season after season.

TLAN STVs are up: https://www.dropbox.com/s/axfovnuba1h7166/TLAN-STVs.zip
I'll get some of the videos I took on my phone uploaded soon. I just finished getting Lucrative's bet uploaded to the best of my ability. Spyromancer, your phone is really, really weird. :/
I bought the prizes, and if I budget for prizes, will continue to do that. I want to have a track record of successful events before I even consider approaching someone to sponsor an event.
First thing I want to do is make a website.
Any criticisms about the venue other than the monitors? I covered food. Anyone got any other points? I want to compile feedback I can send to the venue as well. Not only things we can consider in the future for events.
The big reason why Glassworks' complaints all flew in at the last minute before the official matches is because of how Highlander's season is structured.
The season as much as we want it to be a testing ground for new maps, really isn't a great place to test maps. This is why the pre-season worked well, and it became an opportunity for UGC to throw in maps that were experimental.
During the off-season, teams are trying to put their rosters together, and they will favour staple maps over anything experimental. Even coordination maps like cp_steel are rarely practised in the off-season because there simply is not a consistent group formed to play and criticise these maps effectively.
I played Glassworks with a team once in the off-season, and did not see it scrimmed by other teams until S16 Week 7 when it was to be played. This is the weekend that of course, your team had to play the map as you were scrimming in preparation to play. This is where teams really began to see any problems they may have had with that map.
I don't see UGC ever bringing back pre-season, and there are other reasons why. The main one being teams simply didn't want that extra week, and would often opt to forfeit. At the same time, it allowed us that one opportunity to scrim on maps we wouldn't normally play; best of all, without the fear that we would lose match points because we weren't comfortable with the map.
The most fun I had critiquing a map would be when Aero would invite me and his other friends every so often to look at his maps. In his early stages, we'd sit in Mumble and look at the work he did. After a while, we ran some PUGs with friends and continued the critiquing stage. Unfortunately, it's such a small scale like many other PUG groups these days it's not a great way to really know how the map's opinion will fare.
League matches provide the most diverse survey for critiquing a map. Simultaneously, it just makes people frustrated that they become expected to perform their best on a map they have to learn; flawed or not. Pre-season was the best chance at playing experimental maps since your score did not count towards your overall ranking.
I'll create a GUI interface in Visual Basic to track the killer's IP.
Simply booking the PCs for PUGs (No food or anything extra) would be much easier to do, and I could do that often, but I do have school to consider. September and October are going to be awkward months for me. It would be fun to grab 12 or so PCs just to screw around with whomever can show up.
What I'd do is collect your $$$ then book accordingly. Typically though, the venue doesn't open until 3. So if I got 7 hours again, we'd be able to play until 10. It all depends, I guess. I'm probably too tired to be thinking about this stuff effectively.
I ran a tried and tested map pool this weekend at TLAN, but in considering ideas for future events, an experimental map pool is something I proposed. Even at GXL, if you guys suggest here or somewhere what kind of experimental maps you want to try even at GXL in PUGs (HL or 6s), I'd be down. PM me here or on Steam if you want to suggest maps.
Guys, I have more stuff to upload, but this is happening right now: http://puu.sh/k2yAd/efdc194e17.png
Sorry about that.
I have had my Razer Naga Hex for 3 years now. No issues with it whatsoever. As "Hex" would imply, it only has 6 buttons and is stupidly priced the same as the 12-button. That frustrated me when it was given to me, because the people who gave it to me could have got more buttons and better-placed M4 and M5 buttons for the same price.
At the same time, however, there are a few things I like about the mouse a lot. I don't play MMOs, or MOBA very much, but the 6 buttons are really nice for changing weapons in TF2. I can't play without them now. The shape fits perfectly in my hand, if that's what you like. For Razer standards, it's small, so good if you have small hands like mine.
Good solid mouse, been to GXL, and sat unused at TLAN. Would I say it's a good mouse? Certainly. Would I buy it again? I would like to look at FPS mice as well.
Spades is on his way home, so is Spyro.
Points I hastily remembered as I was falling asleep:
Possibly make it a 2-day event. That way more teams can compete and we won't be under heavy time deadlines.
Venue didn't have enough burgers for everyone, and that became an obvious issue. Definitely make sure they're prepared next time.
Have a stream. Would like to learn how to set that up. Who wants to cast? Would need to remember my brother's camcorder at the very least.
Might remember more stuff as people post. Aas for copying configs, I copied my entire cfg and custom folders to my flash drive so if I had to play, I could just delete everything and replace it with the working stuff from my computer.
As they say in Scouts Canada; "plan, do, review."
From my end, the first thing I know I screwed up bad with was Mumble. I had just enough time to get a server set up, and after trouble with that, did not have time to get a Mumble server going without causing a delay. Getting a Mumble setup is something I will allocate time for, and I'll make sure I have a Mumble installer with me as well. Thankfully, there's always someone's Mumble to bastardize (hahahahahah).
Next event? Maybe sometime between GXL and the new year. Size: probably not much bigger than what we had this event. (We can consider a bigger event in the spring or summer)
Some ideas for other events:
- Experimental map pool
- Dead/old map pool
- MGE, Ultiduo, or BBall-specific tournaments
- New players/mentorship tournament (Teams of new players either mixed in with or coached by experienced players)
Your feedback counts the most:
I would love to play with the French TF2 community to practice my French, but I cannot commit to a full season of Euro TF2 of any form. If you guys kept up a PUG group/system, I would love to participate in that.
