#17 cp_snakewater in Map Discussion

TBH if you're looking to make last easier to manage the map itself is solid at its core, the reason it's so hard to push is the amount of space afforded to the defending team to kite ubers (distance).

The last itself would be easier to push out of and push into if the point itself were much thinner.

This could be effected by: moving the right side door (assuming we're looking at second from last) to the left scrunching up the map that way so the last point is smaller and the lobby area easier to navigate with less distance to cover - thus easier to push last and easier to push out of last.

I don't have any mapping skills, but the outside edge of the shack would be a good starting point. Just cut off everything to the right of that shack and scoot the lobby door and the interior of the lobby over accordingly. Some space on the left could also be taken away inside the lobby and on last itself if you *really* wanted to go crazy.

That way when you push out the left most door and the right door are fairly close together and can be cleared quickly. While defending last the opposing team would not have tons of space to run away from an enemy team's uber.

Just a suggestion if you're really in the mood to toy around with things lol.

#47 An Abrupt Farewell to You All in Off Topic

Good luck ghost.

These things have a way of working out, even if no other entity steps in to pay for your sister. The hospital understands that if they ruin your family your parents will never pay them back. I had to have major back surgery when I was a kid - they charged outrageous sums, eventually we came to an agreement that was very manageable for everybody. And a person with Brad's skills (or a lawyer) could protect your family's personal belongings and properties from the hospital's collection agency.

The short-term will still be pretty gnarly, so I wish you, and all parties involved, the best.

#26 When did you realize you were better than average? in TF2 General Discussion

I'm still utter shit and more or less always have been.

I wish I had a person to yell at me all the time about how shit I am as well.

That's more or less how I think of myself in relation to tf2.

#10 Origin in Off Topic

I had a lot of trouble getting my DLC to work with steam as well. Eventually, in a few cases, I just went to the pirate bay and followed their method for unlocking the DLC since steam was having trouble providing me with the DLC that I was given by Bioware when I wrote them a series of angry letters about Dragon Age 2 lol.

On the bright side, you got to talk to a human - that human just had no idea what you wanted lol.

#7 The big book on gender in Off Topic

I wouldn't suggest this for 4-5th graders - mainly because they aren't acquainted with much, the language and ideas presented are a bit complex. Of course, a child who feels out of place may find it deeply reassuring, since kids have a way of assuming that whenever somebody doesn't like them it's the end of the world because they don't have any perspective. But a 14-18 year old could handle it quite well I'd think. I imagine it'll get some play in colleges as well since it provides a simple introduction to newer ideas about gender and how it differs from sex.

An interesting read, it also reminded me of my college days a bit since I ended up deeply involved in the LGBTq community in college since it's a pretty solid place for a Communist to be and a lot of the ideas presented in regards to gender were pretty alien to me.

#56 Emotional Experiences in Off Topic

I've had a lot of wacky shit happen to me in my day, and a lot of friends die - I'm unlucky I guess, but probably the most formative emotional experience happened to me when I was dating a roommate of mine in college who was from Palestine and she went home to visit her mom and dad after having been away for 3 years. It just so happened that was the same January where Israel carried out Operation Cast Lead.

Being a white American whose only experience with war would be in history books or friends who bought into the whole "money for college" scheme and got deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, it was incredibly shocking to me. She called me using a vonage phone number one day just to chat, and you could literally hear the bombs dropping in Gaza. She was in Rammallah, so she was quite safe, but the copper connections were being rocked by the bombing and artillery fire so every hit you'd hear "CUSHHHHHHHHH WOOOOOO" pass through the phone and everything would get really distorted.

I started counting the hits subconsciously - there were a lot.

I dated another girl pretty much the rest of the time through college, we lived together, had briefly discussed marriage plans, and then she found out that the only graduate school she could get into affordably was in Europe, and that she'd have to remain there for several years. I was emotionally devastated and that brought on a pretty serious brush with alcoholism and depression (the two really go hand in hand). But that's not the story I intend to tell here. I have a son, who is now five, and for the purposes of this story, we'll say he was 3. A good friend of mine decided to come over and help me cook a big dinner just to chill out and take my mind of the aforementioned events. We have fun, she plays Donkey Kong Country with the boy as I cook, then we switch places; a good time. Then we sit down for dinner.

My 3 year old looks at her with a face full of consternation, looks back and me, points an accusatory finger at her, and says "daddy, thats not (the name of my x)" Pretty awkward and heavy. One of those moments in life where you don't even and can't even say anything lol.

#38 OTHER HOBBIES? in Off Topic

I like to go hiking, I garden a lot (I essentially farm 1 1/2 acres) - I have this sort of fantasy of just becoming a hermit in the country with a large library. I do the parenting thing a lot, so lots of little things in there like building forts, various toys, perfect sticker placement, etc. I also enjoying cooking and baking a lot - I only buy raw ingredients from the store and bake my own bread. Typically Mediterranean/Italian-American/Latin American style food is made. I'm none of those things, they just happen to please me most - especially Mediterranean having lived with Palestinians for 2 years lol.

I spend about 1/2 the day playing with kiddo or directly mentoring him, and the other half letting him mess about while I read stuff. At any given time I'm reading 1 fictional work and one Marxist text of some sort. Currently re-reading all of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide, and working through some Hegel.

#11 Looking for a game to kill time. in Off Topic

The black isle classics are solid western RPGs if you've not played them:

Baldurs Gate 1-2 (EE is available on steam + the multiplayer actually works)
Fallout 1-2 (also on steam)
PLanescape torment (the best RPG - though be prepared to "role-play" and not just kill shit and level up a bunch). You'd have to torrent or get it on GoG.
Icewind Dale 1-2(hack and slash kill things level up)

They'll all sink in tons of hours

Knights of the Old Republic 1-2 were pretty good RPGs too.

Some paradox strategy games are pretty fun too depending on how deep you like to go, crusader kings 1 is a pretty solid choice, or Europa Universalis 3, Hearts of Iron 2 if you like playing risk.

If you aren't very old school, and want a mix of RPG and RTS, heroes of might and magic 3 is also a really solid choice that can show why gaming in 1999 was in many ways superior to what we have now.

#13 Internet being stolen in Off Topic

It's all rather deceiving.

1/2 the advertised speed though is a bit much.

Here is my random listing of internet fix stuff.

Step 1, check your network and see who all is using it if you aren't password protected (you should be).

Step 2, if you have access to your router directly, just hop into it by googling the model or calling your ISP and asking for the access information if they provided you with the router/modem. Then throttle everybody else who uses internet at your house so that your computer gets priority. I had to do this back when I'd have guests over regularly because they'd pillage my internet at night.

Step 3, if you're on wireless, test it wired because in most cases wireless is a joke.

Step 4, open CMD, type in ping www.google.com -n 50, this will tell you if you have packet loss, if you are experiencing any packet loss you need to call your ISP because something is broken.

Step 5, in CMD, type tracert www.google.com, this will show you roughly how you're being routed to California, you can try other websites that are based elsewhere around the country, such as www.whitehouse.gov which is in Chicago for the time being. If you notice any really strange routing choices that don't make any sense (like going in the wrong direction geographically) you may need to call your ISP because something is broken.

Step 6, if nothing seems to apply - no random people using your internet, no roommates/family members pillaging your bandwidth, no packet loss, and no weird routing, you need to call your ISP and see if they can do anything, but likely they wont be able to.

With cable it could very well be that somebody who lives close to you is sucking up all your bandwidth. In college the house I lived at actually got a letter from the company asking us to destroy the internet less because everybody on the block was complaining about poor speeds and we were devouring all the bandwidth in the area lol.

#20 Scout v Soldier Discussion in TF2 General Discussion

As a general rule of thumb, in MGE, the scout should pretty much always win because they can manipulate the terrain effectively to deny the soldier the ability to shoot ground and get decent damage. A lot of folks say for solly vs scout, in MGE, the soldier is on a timer and if he can't manage to get the kill before the scout gets to where he wants to be to chip damage + manipulate the terrain to deny you splash, the soldier loses, in general.

The gunboat soldier is at an even larger disadvantage because he has no hit scan weapon, so if the scout *does* get to some high ground or place that's hard to splash, the GB solly is going to die. Especially given that jumping against a scout is basically guaranteed death.
