#11 Record Store Day 2014 in Off Topic
d_bdont you guys know that the compact disc is the way of the future????????????

You filthy peasants think you can get high quality audio out of CD with a sampling frequency of only 44.1kHz? SACD is the only choice for the truly discerning listener 8)

On-topic: I like that this event promotes visiting and supporting your local music store, but I don't think I'd ever buy vinyl. It's unwieldy, non-portable, expensive, and fraught with potential mechanical issues (groove wear, keeping the surfaces clean)...

Solid, I dig it. Got an old-timey gospel feel that I'm down with.

#40 Sezco made me decide to post this in TF2 General Discussion
foxyHey, I'm one of the TF2Center devs. Sorry I'm rushed for time, but I'll respond later properly. Just wanted to say I think this looks cool, and we should discuss how we can integrate more easily (I assume you're using steam browser which has some known issues - maybe they jump up the priority list)

From what I figured out last night, the browser the MOTD uses is at least superficially distinct from the Steam overlay browser in the sense that it has its own cookies/cache (persistent between TF2 launches). I would bet that they use the same browser/rendering engine, but I haven't done enough testing to conclusively determine this.

As rays said, this is still a big ugly hack and we haven't fully determined its viability. That being said, I am more than willing to discuss it in greater depth with knowledgable parties who might be able to help us advance this proof of concept.

I also had an idea to make a hud mod with tf2center support built in. However, tf2center doesn't have any readily-available APIs for polling lobby data/joining lobbies AFAIK, so this would be difficult to do without some TLC from the tf2center devs.

#14 wierd "timeout" lags on netgear cg3000 in Off Topic

A few things I do to mitigate latency issues with my wireless:

1) Enable QoS
2) Forward ports for TF2 (if there's an option for it, be sure to set TF2's ports to "high" priority)
3) Use inSSIDer to make sure I'm not on a congested channel with all my neighbors

I find that if I'm suddenly getting terrible performance, it's because too many of the neighborhood routers have hopped into my channel. Changing it usually mitigates this, but this probably isn't viable if you live in a dense area (dorm/apartment).

You can also look into getting a dual band router/wireless card that both support the far less crowded 5GHz band. Beware that these have terrible range though.

#5 TF2 Ownership Stats in TF2 General Discussion
tranchemusicAlmost half of HL2 owners never played it, haha

In the article, they note that Steam has only had the "Hours played" profile stat since 2009. Most likely everybody got their fill of HL2 long before then and hasn't played since.

#1 TF2 Ownership Stats in TF2 General Discussion

Ars just posted a very interesting article on stats they generated by scraping Steam user profiles:
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/04/introducing-steam-gauge-ars-reveals-steams-most-popular-games/

(tl;dr) Here are the TF2 related charts:

http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/steammeter-graphs-0404.003.png

http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/steammeter-graphs-0404.004.png

http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/stacked-hours-correct.001.png

I think it's interesting that TF2 makes up ~8% of total hours of all games played on Steam, but it doesn't even show up on the median number of hours per owner chart. This means that most of the hours played in TF2 are contributed by a relatively small number of players with *lots* of playtime. This is hardly surprising, but a very interesting insight to be statistically proven.

#5 Unusual Server Bans in TF2 General Discussion

You might try typing unbindall in console and then going under keyboard options and hit "use defaults". This will make sure none of your keys are bound to anything funky.

Also, look in your configs and make sure nothing weird is happening in there either.

Unless you want to stretch the image, it is impossible to get rid of the black bars.

#28 DM Changes in TF2 General Discussion
DrPloxoIt's an excessive ban, it's his call ultimately, but it isn't particularly harmful to have people have rocket jumper.
And it's DM, hp isn't really a thing to be worried about (you get it back as you go and instant respawn), it's hitting shots. So why would it be harmful to get rid of your primary to get better at shotgun aim? You could always whip out the real rocket launcher in a pinch, but that's not the point of it.

When somebody can answer that, I'd fold on it.

It seems to me that the ban stems more from the concern that people can and have used it troll and waste a slot in a dm server.

#67 The Keyboard Thread (last updated Sep. 24, 2013) in Hardware

Thanks for the detailed reply, I appreciate it! I'll go on geekhack and make a thread there.

I use my computer peripherals a ton, so I'm not fazed by spending a bit extra up front to get the keyboard best suited to my needs. I'll probably start looking into keyboards with topre switches and see if there's one that suits me.
