Weapons lying around are pretty annoying.
If you find it annoying there's a client cvar to disable it.
what's the command? I only know of tf_dropped_weapon_lifetime which requires sv_cheats

that's what I was referring to, since when did it require sv_cheats 1? huh.

well even so, see the debate above as to why they're enabled

Hey all, after a lengthy discussion I've set up the first iteration of my Vanilla Experience server.

To explain the server simply, this is a dedicated server devoted to being a pub-like experience, however almost all weapons, and all cosmetics, are completely disabled. Additionally, the map cycle of this server is dynamic - each week I'll remove maps that turn out to not be fun, and add in new ones that might. My goal is to have half of the maps be Workshop maps, and half Valve.

The mapcycle is currently as follows:

I love the crossbow personally, but I don't know if it really fits the feel here. Fucking nobody would run syringe gun and that's what I'm trying to avoid. Yes, it is objectively an awesome weapon, but I think it's out of place here. I'm already treading a fine line between a lobby and a pub. I'm already hesitant to allow the ubersaw.

BSPEAlso, goldrush is literally just pl_dustbowl. Like if I made goldrush and tried to sell it I would get sued by the makers of dustbowl.

I don't care for goldrush at all. Blame the voters. I don't want both, but would you guys prefer dustbowl over goldrush?

BSPEYou should consider enabling weapon pick-ups. I haven't seen them break any pubs as much as they break other modes like ultiduo. There are some pretty cheeky things you can do with weapon pick-ups in the spirit of pubs.

They weren't going to be disabled in the first place.

BSPEReasonable class limits on some classes would be great. 3 sentries on badwater roof and 2 sentries on the ground below it is the worst kind of TF2. It's just first person Age of Empires.

I'll look into it. Classlimit 3 and 2 for most classes sounds fine. Not enough to force HL, but just enough to stop 5 engies.

I've now gone through and personally vetted every workshop map left on the list, and most look really solid. I adore cp_stoneyridge and cp_furnace personally. I have a few doubts about pl_rust and pl_timbermill but I'm definitely willing to give them a chance.

According to early results from the poll, the following non-stock items will be allowed:

Flare Gun
Bonk! Atomic Punch
Ubersaw
Sandvich
Cloak and Dagger

All partner taunts and infinite duration taunts will be banned, but lore-friendly class-specific taunts will be allowed. This can easily change based on feedback.

Round duration will be 25 minutes. Damage spread, bullet spread, and random crits will all be disabled. The max player count will be 20.

itszedTimbermill is pretty shit tbh

I want to give it a chance in a pub setting. If it doesn't work very well then I'll remove it. The mapcycle is incredibly flexible, and will change every week, shifting out bad maps for new promising ones. Good ones will stay.

MagikarpNot to discourage, but we've had a couple of these servers and they have tend to fail. I for one actually do support these and try to join when I can, but overall nobody joins them enough. I will try my best to join this one when I can as I have always loved map rotation servers with old maps. I would recommend having 20 minutes as the server time limit, so people won't feel they are too bored with one map and can get to play more maps faster. Pretty good mapcycle you have already.

I'm trying to improve it over previous iterations by allowing some unlocks and having a really nice mapcycle. It won't replace pubs, of course, but I feel it's a nice medium between lobbies and pubs for a competitive skill level.

Here is the current WIP mapcycle:

All non-Valve maps will use the built-in Map Workshop, so they'll be downloaded and updated by TF2 automatically for you directly from Steam. You won't need to download them or wait for a long-ass FastDL to take place.

I'd love some feedback on the mapcycle so far. Every single workshop map listed (except for Granary) is on a trial basis. If you guys don't like it I'll remove it, but I do ask that you give it a chance. I've provided links for each one so you can take a look. Some Valve maps are on trial too, if they turn out to not work well I'll remove them.

Additionally, since 46% of you want a few unlocks rather than none (16%) or most (18%), here's a new strawpoll. Please vote for every weapon you'd like to see allowed, but please remember that this is meant to be a stock server - don't just vote for competitive weapons. Remember that a banned weapon means enemies can't use it, either. For example, if the Sandvich is banned, every Heavy will have a shotgun, no matter what.

As per prior poll results:

  • Skins will not be allowed. While some are not obnoxious and fit the TF2 aesthetic, it would be unfair to only allow some and ban others.
  • No cosmetics will be allowed. I would have liked the first 9 hats, but I don't know of a way to disable unusual effects.

EDIT: I'm going through and vetting each Workshop map now, and I've swapped Overgrown for Furnace Creek, which I think will play really nicely. Overgrown is gorgeous but its actual design is questionable at best.

AndKennethI can't say I've played those ones in pub tbh, I'm sure they're great. It would be a shame to leave process out of the map pool though.

Are there any reskins of Process? I like the map, and it works well in pubs, I just don't think the tileset really fits the aesthetic I'm looking for.

AndKennethThe only 5cp map I've seen work in pub is process. You wouldn't imagine it but it just seems to work.

Yukon and Coldfront are pretty decent in pubs.

pelti personally feel like a lot of those maps are just not very fun
and thats why no one wants to play them even in valve pubs where people dont know any better
well and fastlane are very bad maps
and 5cp maps in pubs can be kind of boring except for a few exceptions and bigger maps like 5gorge and process
i suppose it is up to you in the end though

Just name maps that are fun but don't feel too ridiculous. I'm looking for actual feedback rather than just "nah do better".
