The Hype
Man, ya'll mofos never gonna be happy :-)
I'm pretty stoked it's finally here. Definitely going to buy it, just to have a copy around. It'd be a cool thing to show your friends if they want to get into TF2 or eSports. Also a good way to support everyone who put a shit ton of effort into it.

Salamancer#143 Perhaps you could dig up some quotes from me, Luke, or eXtine backing that up. I'd appreciate it.
Not that I have any issue with Luke charging a small cost for the full quality download, but June is correct that this was initially proposed as a "community contribution" and that Luke was volunteering his time to edit it. I'd rather you just straight up say Luke needs/wants some financial benefit for all his time instead of suggesting that you had implied there would be a cost at the start of the project. I will be buying a copy of this to support Luke however I do think June is entitled to complain about the cost which was not forewarned.

The trailer looks fantastic. How could anybody watch that and think the download isn't worth $5? I'm honestly amazed that such a high quality version (1080p) is going to be offered for free, considering all the work that went into it.
Thanks to everybody involved with the project, don't let the self-entitled dorks stain your outstanding work.

Why is 1080p for free not good enough though? Everyone is getting a high quality piece of art and history for absolutely nothing. Payment for a download is optional, and the kind of support that Luke deserves for a whole year of work for zero pay.

About 35 minutes. I believe VHX supports Paypal, Amazon and Credit card. Straight download yes, multiple qualities / filesizes. and YouTube. ;)

The VHX version isn't much different from YouTube. YouTube will also be 1080p, but then 25fps. We didn't shoot it on a RED camera or something. The main reason to buy it would be to support us! If you don't want to buy it but just watch on YouTube, that's cool too. I never considered it a paid job, I've pretty much done everything in my free time. Didn't even know we'd be able to sell it until a couple days ago.

38:38 was the runtime of one of the near-final versions I have.

Tang_UnSalamancerSeems like stirring the pot to me, Lange. All I'm reading from him at this point is a bunch of :words: designed for flamebait. Doesn't he like getting -fragged anyway?
yes, he has stated that he eats a bowl of -frags every day for breakfast.

Because this was never supposed to take a year, the fact that it did was a result of malaise and mismanagement, and that now the final product that apparently delayed the project an additional two months (which one would have assumed to have been the intended quality from the beginning because of how big i46 and the community push was for it) is now behind a paywall after all of this.
As for me being entitled, I have never really cared much about the documentary but find the farce of its production funny and the fact that there is now a price tag on the final product is really kind of a slap in the face to the community. Acting like it isn't is just being prissy.

Nobody funneled money into the project to get it done, nobody preordered a copy for a set release date. Luke just said it was done entirely in his free time. I don't know what's with the draconian judgement based around the delayed release, but it's probably not encouraging people to volunteer their time and skill.
And it's five fucking optional dollars. The Youtube version is still high quality. Like, honestly. Come on.

I'm not suggesting that I implied a cost at the outset. All I'm suggesting is that I never explicitly said anything one way or the other - mainly because we hadn't really decided anything of the sort at the outset. We're splitting hairs about this, though. I'm glad you'll be supporting Luke and eXtv!

#170 His posts aren't valid at all. He's putting words in eXtv members' mouths, and acting like he knows anything about how this production process was managed, especially in #168. Read that particular post and tell me with a straight face that's not flamebait.
We're glad for any support we get for the 50fps version. There aren't any bonus features, extra content, or anything else. It's just a higher framerate and the satisfaction of compensating the work that went into the project.

Nothing wrong with wanting to monetize it, but it probably would have been better to let everyone know that was the plan from the beginning or at least something that was being considered.
I'll probably just watch it on youtube myself.

How much of the source material is actually 50 fps?
If we'd known it was an option, we probably would have. Like Luke said, he didn't know we'd be able to charge for a 50fps version on VHX until like 2 days ago.
defyare people really complaining about 5 dollars
We all spent at least that much every day during the Steam sale.

Alright let me clarify because I forgot I'm dealing with people that are genuinely excitable about this game.
The massive delay on the release was constantly defended by people as "he's not getting paid for this"/"it's volunteer work" and honestly, I don't particularly give a shit about him charging money for the ultimate product here.
But in case you need a fucking dictionary ground up and snorted into your skull, "volunteer" is pretty much a position that is mutually exclusive with "getting paid for the fucking job." If eXtv had said, hey guys give us some cash so luke can focus on this project, I probably would have actually applauded them for admitting that they needed assistance on this and that one guy working in his free time on a project (that evidently had loftier and loftier aspirations set for it internally while the rest of the community basically just wanted anything) of this magnitude was laughable from minute one. The joke here is that it is now a purchasable product and apparently the defense for it from Sal (who I've personally come to find adorable how jumpy and defensive he gets when anyone questions this project) is that "we never confirmed/denied that it was actually volunteer work."
and apparently dellort's words even regardless of his defense of the validity of my claim confirm that I was not the only person that was under the impression that this was a volunteer job.

95% or so. Some stuff (interviews) don't have much motion though, meaning you won't notice everywhere.

Devil's advocate:
Yeah, there's a viable platform that says June is getting hyper-retarded over $5 for what I'm assuming is a BluRay in terms of quality (June doggie you know FULL WELL how much anime BDs cost for just one season. That shit is like a week's paycheck before overseas shipping, handling, and customs. $5 ain't nothin' in the face of that). HOWEVER.
There's also the platform that dellort is currently on that is saying "well maybe it's kinda slick to suddenly throw up a BUY NOW button for a project that was supposed to be a not-for-profit documentary?". $5 ain't nothin' - that's a quarter short of a one way LIRR train ticket from Douglaston to Great Neck. The problem lies in that he's saying that somewhere along the line it changed from a community contribution to a paid download, and it wasn't just said up front that people could toss in 5bux for a HQ download for good lookin' local playback.
Also dismissing someone's posts as "flamebait" just so you don't have to give someone you don't like a valid response considering how big this project is supposed to be is a really childish and egotistical thing to do, especially here given how small the actively posting community is.

This is the main issue I have. I respect eXtv as an organization and genuinely appreciate all the work they do for the tf2 community, but it's becoming a repeated event that they aren't open to the community about an issue and then try to cover it up at the last minute with something along the lines of "well we never said you wouldn't have to pay for it." Generally the community lets these sorts of things go, in this case it's not a big deal because the fee is only $5, but would everyone react the same way if it had been set at $30? It's just a flaw in their management/community interaction which I wish they would fix.
