I'm just using the Wikipedia definition of flamebait. Someone correct me if I'm misusing the word.
I don't speak for eXtine or Luke, but when the suggestion was made a few days ago to put down a payment option, I was all for it. It gives an easy, direct way for anyone who wants to support the production to donate. Not wanting to support the production isn't something anyone should look down on, either - we are indeed offering the final product for free on YouTube. The only difference between the two will be release day and framerate. If either of those differences is cause for concern, as it seems they may be for gr8stalin, then by all means tell us. It's like I said before - if the majority of the most loyal TF2 fans think we're doing this the wrong way, we can probably still change it.
So far, it doesn't seem like a majority. It seems like one person with no vested interest in the subject (June) wandering into a thread just to sperg.

What the fuck is wrong with you June? You don't have to pay a dime to see the entire documentary. It's an OPTIONAL donation. Films are only 24 fps anyway.

Did you consider just opening up a donation account towards LuckyLuke to reward all of his work on the documentary? To me this seems like a better option in every sense as it's not misdirecting the community (even if it was only a small matter), and allowing those who truly feel they should get the full quality download without paying to do so. Of course there's no guarantee that Luke would make as much money from this option, but given the past record of genorousity from this community I would be confident in saying he would've actually ended up with more profit through this option.

this is quite the argument...

That's not my point at all.
I said twice, exactly the same way, that "$5 ain't nothin'". Those exact words. I even gave an example of something I normally throw $5 down on. This is a full-length documentary about one of the biggest events for TF2 that might actually end up going viral if it's the blockbuster it's being hyped as, and that is a train ticket good for a one-way trip to my gym, a pizza place I like, a kosher supermarket, a Rite Aid, a strip mall, etc. It's of equal value to me. I have no problem with the money or the quality itself - this opinion you are putting into my mouth and claiming it's mine (that right there is downright snakelike). The problem I have is exactly the same problem dellort has with it - it was a quiet decision to stealthily knock a "BUY NOW" button off the table onto the webpage and pretend it was always there.

2sy_morphiendBut in case you need a fucking dictionary ground up and snorted into your skull, "volunteer" is pretty much a position that is mutually exclusive with "getting paid for the fucking job." If eXtv had said, hey guys give us some cash so luke can focus on this project, I probably would have actually applauded them for admitting that they needed assistance on this and that one guy working in his free time on a project (that evidently had loftier and loftier aspirations set for it internally while the rest of the community basically just wanted anything) of this magnitude was laughable from minute one. The joke here is that it is now a purchasable product and apparently the defense for it from Sal (who I've personally come to find adorable how jumpy and defensive he gets when anyone questions this project) is that "we never confirmed/denied that it was actually volunteer work."
and apparently dellort's words even regardless of his defense of the validity of my claim confirm that I was not the only person that was under the impression that this was a volunteer job.
It was a volunteer job, and everyone gets their free 1080p stream. You still get the whole thing for free, there's just an optional 50fps version for $5.
He volunteered, everyone gets a free product, nothing shady happened. The end.

I'm kind of disappointed that a four day event yielded only 35 minutes of material.

I'm starting to repeat myself I think but something shady did happen, and while the $5 fee really isn't a big deal and probably not worth arguing over, it's more the principle behind it that's an issue. eXtv has a habit of hiding small issues from the public community, and trying to pass them off later as something that they had already stated or intended from the start. This is a very supportive and forgiving community, being more open about the need for help or admitting to small mistakes would benefit everyone in the long run, and I'm sure if Sal/Luke had posted in this thread straight up saying "I know this was meant to be a community contribution, but it looks like Luke could use some financial help so we're opening up a donation account for him" people would've been more than willing to donate. If it had been handled in that manner I would at least have no issue with it, and would instead be defending eXtv as opposed to defending June (for the record I hate his hyper-aggressive/hateful posts but he does sometimes raise valid points which get ignored).

We'll get some interviews (per player / person) up on our YouTube after the documentary released, many more minutes there! :)

I actually doubt the title could have been worse. I think the last 10 minutes will just be throngs of Eagles carrying star-spangled banners.

Wouldn't it have been better to crowdfund the documentary on kickstarter from the begining?
I would have more than happily donated, and I will still buy it now, but it would have been much more efficient and productive for everyone if luke got funded from the start and we all knew what we were gonna get / not get from the start

Well I'm a bit confused at the notion that we're pretending anything, or trying to slip anything under the table. Luke and the rest of eXtv volunteered our time for this project. A few days ago, we saw the opportunity to add an optional price tag, so we did.
Did we consider a donation button? I don't think I did. You'd have to ask Luke or eXtine whether the thought hit their minds. Would it have been a good idea? Sure. As it stands now, it seems like most people here don't have a problem with the way it's currently going, but I'll keep reading the thread to see if it becomes more an issue.
As for the length, I often passed emails back and forth with Luke on cutting bits out. Wanted to make each scene succinct and punchy, without too much irrelevant stuff.
In the end, if it seems shady to offer the 50fps version for a $5 contribution, then I apologize. It certainly wasn't anyone's intent to pull a fast one. The sinister motive being ascribed to this move has caught me completely by surprise, which is why I've seemed defensive.

Perhaps this confusion is a result of differing perspectives regarding youtube as a form of viewing the documentary. I'm sure a lot of people are perfectly happy to watch it in compressed-quality, and couldn't care less about the higher framerate and slight quality increase of the downloadable version. Others however (a small minority) probably feel that handing out a youtube version is like advertising a free amusement park and then on opening day having only a single ride available, and if you want to experience the full park you must pay for it. Perhaps I'm just extra-picky over things like that because I edit videos myself.

We are getting a cool movie for free.
Being mad at an optional payment for a 50fps download is nonsensical. Everything they "promised" would have been totally true if there had been no way whatsoever to get the higher quality version (if they had uploaded it to youtube and done nothing else). The only change this makes is one more option for you. If you don't want to buy it then don't.

Would have quite liked it in 'Pay what you like' form so people who value it can give money for it. Would probably earn more than 5 dollars a pop too.

I guess I am one of those who is perfectly happy to have his content via YouTube, so you're right about perspective. Like you, I find most pay-for-premium service to be distasteful. In my head, I'm not really treating a 50fps download like it's "premium" because I personally wouldn't be able to tell the difference. But you do have a good point.

Anyways I made the point I wanted to make. Wasn't trying to attack eXtv personally, I just hope you're aware that you aren't always as open with the community as I think you could be, and while this issue was raised over a small matter, I think it's important to address because it could prevent any potential conflict between eXtv and members of the community on future projects.

Communication is always one of the toughest things to do well.
I was focused this week on just making sure that we picked a release date and communicated that date ASAP, because I knew it would be a huge relief to everyone just to know that it was all falling into place. I do appreciate your feedback dellort. Negative feedback is useful as long as it's constructive, which yours is.

Real.
I really don't like it when people start doing seemingly backhand stuff because no one will talk outside of building hype - reminds me too much of struggling with HiRezBart for weeks trying to get pugs going for friends and threadgoers after the Shazbowl.

I remember heading onto Jaeger's site a long time ago:
Given the insanse response to Lopert's Uber Timing Script and the discussion it spawned I've suspended all work on Tips & Tricks, Match Comms, and Demo releases probably indefinetly. This community disgusts me sometimes.
I believe noid said it best:
This is why you can't have nice things.
love, noid
Just a little thought. I do find it absurd that you could complain about a free documentary created on someone's spare time. I find it perfectly fine for eXtv/Luckyluke to get some revenue for this, he does deserve it of course.
EDIT: If everything is sorted out, I don't think that adding more fuel to the fire is a good idea, so, disregard my post if everything is fine now.

Nobody in this thread has disagreed with this, it was more how eXtv went about getting this revenue that caused an issue.

mustardoverlordnormally I'd use the fact that people are arguing about this so ridiculously hard as evidence that people are being overly defensive about which words they use, but june is a ~debate kid~ so I'm pretty sure it's just because he finds it entertaining
I do like dellort's point but june's have been so riddled with derision and inflated self-importance (not exactly uncommon) that I can't take them seriously. I do wish that eXtv had been more up-front with this, but to me considering the scale of a 'mistake' such as this one, as well as Sal's pragmatic attitude (he seems willing to scrap the 50 fps idea and put up a straight donation link if people prefer) this isn't a big enough deal to argue about. Thanks for the work on this documentary, can't wait for the nerd chills!

Yao, just wanted to pipe in real quick.
We can't release the 50fps version on YT, YT doesn't support higher frame rates.
We could have asked for funds to pay for Luc to be able to focus on this more, but there were signs pointing to that being a terrible decision. It came up sometime in some posts and people were upset at the notion that we'd fundraise to complete a promised project.
Luc's not surviving off of just eXtv money and I can't justify spending eXtv money on a flight to i49, so we're not eXactly rolling in it.
We promised a documentary and we promised we'd get it done. Apologies to June if he/she feels misled. We needed to find another distribution route besides YouTube and VHX was a great option. We talked to Steam as well, and I guess there technically is still a chance at that.
I hope you guys enjoy it, I hope it'll be another great recruiting tool for this fantastic community.
