I tuned into 'Tip of the hats' with the rest of the community which turned out fantastically, amazing job to all involved. I spoke to a few people about the HRG vs mix^ scrims and how awesome it was to hear the communcation from both teams and it got me thinking if this would be possible during the regular season of ESEA..

The process sounds simple... Casters would specify a mumble for the match. For example HRG vs mix^: Mix would have a channel in the mumble and so would HRG and they could just link and unlink the channels with the casting channel as they did during the stream. This could also benefit casts in the sense that both teams would already be in the same mumble for post-game or even pre-game interviews. I think alot of people including myself really benefitted from hearing the players.

I wanted to see what the community thought about the situation, and just get a discussion going as to why this may or may not be a good idea. A big part of whether this could happen or not would be on the players and if they are comfortable with us being able to hear the communication which is why I'd also like to hear their opinion on the idea.

So now I ask you tf.tv, what do you think?

I got a huge amount of feedback after that cast with people asking for the same thing. As a caster the "war-room" comms were a huge asset and brought so much to the cast, making it far more interesting IMO. It adds an awesome flare to viewing tf2 as an esport.

Lange would be the man to get this running. (as lange is usually the man to get all things running)

If possible, it would be incredible.

I think you said it yourself, bloodsire, what differentiates an invite team from the others is their comms.

hearing mumble is the best way to get insight as to what it's like to play in invite

You would need to configure it so you don't have to drag/drop people in mumble, because I know I use the mumble overlay and a lot of people do, and if I see the casters on my overlay I'd get very distracted. That's the only way I would agree to it, the comms themselves I don't think people would mind sharing.

does the overlay show people from linked channels? I'm not sure if it does, as I do not use overlays, but I know the way we did it last night was just by linking the channel. Did you see us pop up from time to time on the overlay? That could be annoying.

All they'd have to do is link the channels. As long as you have the overlay set to only display people in your channel you're good.

People in linked channels only show up when they talk.

cool, so long as the casters shut up when they link channels, this shouldnt be a problem right? For the most part I don't think we said anything when linked accept that one time when Brad went all William Wallace and I snickered at how beautiful it was.

Can the mumbles be delayed by 90 seconds like the STVs?

This is the reason it is not done most of the time. The are plugins to set up mumble delays and yeah I think this would add a lot to casts. At some point it's going to backfire and there will be some controversy surrounding what is heard and that may be another thing to consider before we implement this as a regular thing. Teams will definitely need to be notified prior to the game that this will be happening during the match.

I'm glad you guys liked it though and I think the mumble linking was definitely one of the highlights.

I agree that the match-comms really add a whole new dynamic to casting. I watched the vod and it just makes it so much more engaging as a viewer to hear how the teams are reacting to everything that's happening.

My only concern would be making sure that nothing gets interrupted when the channels are linked. I know there were a few times during the ultiduo when the mumble channels were linked and we could hear the casters talking for a bit as we were playing, which can be very distracting. If the process was streamlined and unnoticeable to the player ( as plat mentioned ) it would be a huge step forward in improving tf2 as a spectator-friendly game.

The comms in TF2 are another thing that I think set it apart from other competitive games, and adding this feature could really help maintain the viewer's interest during stalemates. Even when the action appears to slow, the comms do not, as people call positioning and plan plays.

Basically, when djc first dropped into the Broder comms during the ETF2L Finals and you could hear them plan a last push, I was hooked. This has to be a part of next season's casts.

If this does go through, there is always a chance that one of the teams may ghost through the cast, and hear their opposing teams comms. There would have to be a way to reassure players that they aren't being ghosts

the comms would still be 90 seconds behind, so I doubt that'll be much of an issue.

The won't for the same reason they don't ghost casts now and listen to the casters call advantages/offclasses/whatever.

etf2l finals were *NOT* in person, correct?

i agree with you totally though, the ability to "go to comms" makes a huge difference in the enjoyment of casting a game.
