That reptile frag video got me wondering.
Coordination and teamwork were completely nullified by random chance.
well back then the players were way better because they had to adapt to random crits. You had to be good enough to dodge hitscan crits, something that's way beyond the current "talent" in invite. you had to be adaptable enough to dodge crit rockets at point blank and predict when they would come. Only those that could do complex mathematical formulas in their heads while fragging away were able to survive at the top of the game.

I know I'm gonna get -fragged to hell for this, but I think it would be fun to play a season without fixed spread and crits on

I'm sure there are crits around there somewhere

Just play heavy and keep firing until you get crits, then proceed to destroy their team.

It was really, really annoying. I played pocket the first season and one of the worst things that happen is killing someone that overextended and out of nowhere his/her last rocket/stickie/pipe kills you and your medic
You got things like Rent-a-Knight getting MVP of the biggest tournament to date (at the time) by pretty much wiping the entire enemy team in 5 shots because 4 of them were crit rockets. Fun game.

good point, to clarify, it was a game of "who wins the favor of the crit gods first"

crits never made sense to me
why does the better team get an even bigger advantage with increased crit rates

lol yeah. you'd think that people would quickly optimize rocket jumping since they are from quake and tfc. i wonder what happened.

I wanted to uninstall every hour, rather than every week.
when a frag video would come out 3/4 of the kills were random crits.
i got cut from my first team after one match because i dropped uber at the start of dustbowl 2 to a crit rocket (kritzkrieg didn't exist back then)

it was annoying but you dealt with it. it obviously sucked when you lost a fight solely because of a crit, but wonderful when you killed like three people with a crit rocket or crit sticky. reallllllllllly annoying as a medic, because rockets would one-shot you unless it was the absolute outside border of the rocket splash hitbox, which would still leave you at ~10 hp.

I wondered about that too, but conc jumping was definitely the preferred method of travel for TFC:
