Both Europe's ETF2L and NA's RGL 6v6 leagues are around 100+ teams per 6v6 season, which is a minimum of 600+ active players, not counting the ones who don't commit or can't commit to a full season but still pug.
From what I heard from South American players their league is usually 15 to 30 teams, with tons of teams dropping every season. They were also heavily affected by the No Foreigners Rule in RGL (max 2 foreigners per 6v6 team) which destroyed some latino teams playing in north america.
So i wonder, Whats left of asiafortress, ozfortress, and the south african communities nowadays? Is australia still going strong?

Australia/New Zealand
ozfortress still thriving with ~40 6v6 teams, 21 HL. LAN Downunder 2025 will be held in Melbourne July 19-20th, with tickets almost sold out.
Asia
AsiaFortress are almost wrapped up with their preliminary qualifier period, with a smaller ~16 team league about to start. A lot of players now play in ozfortress though.

Oh the no foreigners rule is news to me. That's insane, high ping really just affects the player with the high ping. Consistent high ping on an enemy team is basically a non-issue. As someone who has gotten facerolled by SA teams I don't think ping was ever a contributing factor. Let the brazillians cook.

IMO South America is seeing a resurgence, the return of a league operator, FBTF, lead to an exciting season of 6s in recent history with the return of players like powah, frz, etc.

Last season was probably the best we've had in quite a while. It was a very competitive league overall, with many strong players returning to the scene. It'll be interesting to see how future leagues shape up, especially since a number of players have stepped away from the scene + Elite grand finals cheating incident.
Now, regarding the "no foreigners" rule in RGL... It really doesn’t make much sense. The South American scene is mainly centered around three countries: Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. No other country has managed to win Elite (the highest division), mainly due to ping issues. When you exclude those three countries, the rest typically get similar or even higher ping to Brazil (where all matches are played) compared to North America. For example, Peruvians average around 100 ping to both Brazil and NA, while Colombians actually get lower ping to NA than to Brazil. So it’s unreasonable to classify those players as "foreigners" in RGL when they experience lower latency in NA than in SA. Uruguay and Paraguay also have low ping in brazil but its rare to see players from there.

I'm surprised intra-south american ping is that bad. Am i just underestimating the distance between population centers or is it more of a routing issue?

Apparently (quite surprising to me anyway) the shortest airline distance between Bogota, Colombia to Sao Paulo, Brazil is actually absurdly close to the distance between Bogota and Chicago (2684 vs 2705 miles). Add just a touch of shitty routing and I can see Colombians on average pinging lower to NA.
Mercator projection and it's consequences.

there's been alot of progress of bridging the gap of ping through continental differences like Valve's SDR letting players connecting from brazil or peru to actually being playable against NA players.
hopefully there would be more advancements toward having players from different county's being able to play against each other.

it's an issue with multiple causes but it's specially difficult for Colombia because Bogota is in the middle of the mountains, in the dead center of the country, so not only do we have to route to the coast of our own country, but then go all the way around the continent to try to connect to the coastal cities in Brazil, going through land, through the amazon, is unrealistic for the future. The connection to Peruvian and Chilean servers is much better now because of what MarioManz said but back when Uncletopia had Miami servers, it's the lowest ping I've ever had on TF2
